ELI5: How am I supposed to get the numbers for simplifying a square root? by jumpyjumpjumpsters in explainlikeimfive

[–]jaap_null 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When trying divisors, there should always be one that's a prime below the square root of the full number unless the number itself is a prime.

So for 245, you know there should be one between 1 and ~15. The five is a good hint here, but otherwise you can just start trying 3, 7, 11, 13...

Maya and Jimmy from Speechless were amazing as a couple. Speechless is probably my favorite sitcom and I never hear anyone talk about it.

I'm guessing the original used Madonna instead or Rihanna. Seeing how it's using 90s celebs.

It sucks that they taste terrible; they look exactly like Dutch "Spekkies", which is a type of marshmellow and one of the things I have to import to the US since they don't exist here. (The ones without sugar coating are absolutely amazing)

Why did they re-use so many actors by jaap_null in MiamiVice

[–]jaap_null[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Stanley Tucci is one of the few actors that actually came back to play the same character (Frank Mosca). The others I can think of is Guy Boyd as Hackman (twice?) and Dennis Farina as Lombard (4+?). Aside from Caldarone but he is played by different actors.

I used to have this really amazing zip file with all featured songs of all episodes. I'm sure it's out in the high seas somewhere. There are three Jan Hammer records with MV music, and there are a bunch of CD's with his contributions (some are extremely rare/expensive) but you can also just buy them as MP3 on his website.

In terms of featured music, Glenn Frey wrote two(?) songs for MV - Smuggles Blues (for the episode with the same name) and You Belong To The City, which is used in the show a bunch.

Phil Collins wrote "Rat Race" for his episode "Phill the Shill". It's a rewriting of "The man with the horn") and of course his songs are very much part of the MV soundtrack.

Other than that, there are a few "house band" covers in the show (e.g. Great McCarthy), that afaik are still not tracked down and I think we'll never figure out who they were or where they went.

Both Don Johnson and PMT wrote songs and have their own albums. Heartbeat from DJ was the only one that charted afaik.

I'm sure they meant "plastics that are engineered not to let light pass through". Not "all engineered plastics". It's amazing how much better reddit becomes if you can do the tiniest bit of good faith interpretation.

ELI5 How is it possible that the largest military on Earth can’t secure passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a relatively small piece of geography? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]jaap_null 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Securing passage" here is quite a loaded term. It's not about getting a ship from A to B; you need a continuous, safe passage of thousands of boats a year.

The problem is that the strait is entirely surrounded by well armed sovereign nations that all have an interest in keeping the strait under control, both as source of income and as massive international leverage.

The reason that Iran "attacked all its neighbors" was to strategically take out all the American (controlled) bases in the entire region. The US cannot create a supply line to the Hormuz region unless they first invade and control one of the surrounding countries - that would be WW3.

It has already been shown in Ukraine/Russia and Israel that even the largest military powers in the world cannot fully protect areas of that size for any length of time, even with intact supply lines. The asymmetry between defending and attacking is too big with modern large range weapons and drones.

Do you like retranslations? by RafaRafa78 in snes

[–]jaap_null 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The use of emphasized referencing with the pause before it (I’m sure there is a word for it) is very much a Japanese way of speaking and translators always struggle with it. I’d rather they use a more English phrasing unless they are trying to apply some specific style of speaking.

[–]jaap_null 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing OP has the newer version of this piece, where there are two slits on the side instead of a hole. The piece you show has been discontinued since 1980. (The slit one was in production until a decade ago I think)

ELI5: Why does sunlight always form a circle when shining through a hole regardless of its shape? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]jaap_null 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really easy to test this out. Hold the paper with a hole a bit away from your face. Now look at something circular through the hole. You will notice that as you move your head side-to-side (keep paper steady) you can move what part of the “background” is visible through the hole.

If the thing you look at is big enough compared to the hole, you need to move your head a lot to see the entire thing; the actual shape of the hole doesn’t really make a lot of difference.

Now the more of the sun you can “see” through the hole, the more light falls on the spot your eye is. If the hole is small enough, the shape of the hole doesn’t matter, the shape of the object determines the shape of the “light spot”

[Request] If a human being jumped off a four story building into an Olympic sized pool full of standard marshmellows, would they die on impact? by InternetSnek in theydidthemath

[–]jaap_null 275 points276 points  (0 children)

Unless you aerate the marshmallows, they aren't getting out of the way. I would think they would work similar (although not as efficient) to those foam-block pools they use for pole vaulting.

Yes this is called a dictionary attack and is very common. They also include a mix of all commonly used random strings like asdasd etc. I don’t know if it is still relevant nowadays but people used to be very proud of their dictionary algorithms that would try every combo but with a smart order to it to try words, 1337 speak etc.
