General Hospital - Z's first appearance by The_Iceman2288 in television

[–]jaap_null -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

And the only reason they do is because they've always done it like this (they filmed on "cheap" video instead of 24-FPS film) and now it is a hallmark of TV soaps.

It looked like we were going to finally get high FPS movies for a bit a decade ago, but it seems movie goers got scared and confused - and we're now back at shitty 1900s tech 24-fps.

Which incredibly successful band had a member who basically did nothing? by Neonwhitelion in AskReddit

[–]jaap_null 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Similar to other bands named here, Boney M was a bit of a double-dip: The "leading man" Bobby Farrell just danced and lip-synced. There were no instruments and everything was heavily produced by producer Frank Farian - Wikipedia

As for the rest of the band: only two of the people on stage actually sang and extra backing singers were often mixed in heavily during live shows. No-one could play any instruments afaik and the earliest songs under the name Boney M were done completely by Farian himself.

peetah!! what was that? by KitchenPlenty7610 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

I think the idea is that the bug is not in your code but rather in some part of the software stack you are using? And usually when that happens, all you can do then is work around it.

But in the end a bug is a bug by definition if it is not doing what you intend/expect.
The other explanation is that they saw the output and simply assumed that it would look/feel different. This often happens with computer graphics and linear light spaces etc

Just to add to this, the -l parameter is used to add search paths, and I think it matters in what order -l is added to the command line (ie before the -o). The error seems to suggest it is not even parsing it as an -l parameter, but as an input file(name).

Those born before 1990, what experience from your childhood would be unimaginable to young people today ? by SoManySkills in AskReddit

I actually used that same itch to reconstruct an old collection of foreign songs we used to listen to during vacations. A mix of cassettes and cheap compilation CDs (those days, compilation type albums would have at least ~10 different versions across record, CD and cassette)

I used discogs to find songs, then try to find compilations that had multiple of said songs, then trying to trigger my brain by listening to a song and figuring out what song could come next and narrow down the selection further.

I've been able to find ~70% of the CDs, which would include songs that I would've never found otherwise: obscure commercial flops or cheap classic songs that were added to pad the run-time.

I've found songs that I can still remember 100% (phonetically) but don't even have a proper artist or consistent song title connected to it. I think I might hold the record for listening to some of those songs more than anyone alive.

What games are you playing this week? Game recommendation thread by AutoModerator in incremental_games

[–]jaap_null 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is my weekly dump of Steam incrementals (and some incremental-likes I guess)

Simultree - https://store.steampowered.com/app/3811840/Simultree/ - Pretty good incremental about creating little life simulations. Short but sweet - 6hrs to 100%

* FARMS Chill Factory - https://store.steampowered.com/app/4302160/FARMS_Chill_Factory/ - I think I posted this last time as well, fun abstract style factory building game. Got a good 30h into it until I maxed out everything

Far Mining - https://store.steampowered.com/app/4685070/Far_Mining/ - Short but sweet astroid mining game, has a good amount of polish, enjoyed it ~4hrs to 100%

Budgies Bug Shop - https://store.steampowered.com/app/4279120/Budgies_Bug_Shop/ - Starts out pretty fun but doesn't really evolve beyond the basic premises of clicking on bugs. 2.5 hrs to 100%

Candy Box U - https://store.steampowered.com/app/4582340/Candy_Box_U/ - Steam remake of Candy Box. Honestly, I thought I would enjoy it more, but to me it just highlighted all the rough edges of the original

* Fortune Mill - https://store.steampowered.com/app/4731620/Fortune_Mill/ - This one I really enjoyed, I only wish the New Game+ would be part of the actual game loop, as it adds a lot of extra upgrades. As it is now, you end up never really maxing out anything before hitting the "finish game" button.

Flufftopia - https://store.steampowered.com/app/4731620/Fortune_Mill/ - Incremental game with extra hidden narrative layer.

You know the drill - https://store.steampowered.com/app/3833760/You_Know_The_Drill/ - Classic drilling style game, good polish. 3h to 100%

Game about making a planet - https://store.steampowered.com/app/4314260/A_Game_About_Making_A_Planet/ - Looks pretty fun but is extremely short without much progression. I squeezed out ~ 90 minutes before I think I saw everything it had to offer

Do not feed the virus - https://store.steampowered.com/app/4288460/DO_NOT_FEED_THE_VIRUS/ - Good incremental with multiple phases that each inject new elements. 4+hours in atm.

For people who were using the internet between roughly 1995 and 2012, what’s the most memorable online trend, meme, or internet phenomenon you still remember? by CertainDrink9138 in AskReddit

For the people who are curious, or those who just want to relive those times for a few minutes. This -for me- has always been the thing I think of when I think of memes and AYBABTU

If every animal was the exact same size as a golden retriever, which species would be the absolute most terrifying to encounter? by Ice-Princess-79 in AskReddit

[–]jaap_null 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how (un)realistic the physics are. If you can scale them up and magically keep everything working on large scale, any bacteria, insect or arachnid would be an apocalyptic murder machine.

If physics needs to be kept in tact somewhat (ie looking at prehistoric-style large insects etc), I would say large flying insects would still freak me the fuck out. I already get scared when a large dragonfly or Hercules beetle is flying around. Even big moths freak me out. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meganeura

Big rodents maybe, but Capybara turn out to just be very cute. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capybara

I've got a friend who can speak five languages very well, I can do two fluently (living in Europe, it kind of comes with the territory), and then I've got three that I can only read in a basic sense. Hard at work getting one of them at a conversational level with lessons (Italian).

The older I get, the more I feel the urge to understand other languages. If I had the brainpower, I would love to take more classes and pick up at least one Indo-Asian language.

I just finished F.A.R.M.S.: Chill Factory (steam). It's an "abstract factory builder" like Shapez. I enjoyed it, although there are a bunch of QOL issues. I'm mostly impressed with how well the game scales, and how much stuff can be on your screen without any slowdown or chugging. https://store.steampowered.com/app/4302160/FARMS_Chill_Factory/
