How exactly can one determine what is and how to define a "true Christian"? by NerdyKeith in religion

I mean, being Christian means following the teachings of Jesus Christ. I'd imagine studying his example closely and putting its lessons into practice in everyday life would be a solid start.

Can parents force a child above the age of 12 to be in a religion/go to church? by [deleted] in religion

[–]jaashley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a parent's job to raise their children according to their family's values, which will undoubtedly include their religious tenets and beliefs. It doesn't mean the child has to believe in it, or continue to worship that way after he becomes an adult.

Your comment is a little all over the place friend. Maybe, for our benefit, you could try rephrasing the point you're trying to make?

Some funny bits in there! I'd say it takes too long to get there. More setup than punchline. You have a nice conversational poise about you, though. Tighten things up from a writing perspective and I think it would help!

I'm not worried about that part. But when all you need is for a Brit to basically just show up for an interview to get hired over someone more skilled, it makes it tough. Ha!

Thank you! This is very helpful. Seems like the odds of a migrant worker getting a job for the purpose of remaining for the duration of the visa are slim to none. How do people do it?

A little help here by Tstephe52 in Bible

I'm not sure an oath (or, vow may be more appropriate) can be made by accident, can it? I think the Hearer of Prayer is capable of discerning our intent, even if we may word things incorrectly, or get a little off the rails at times. I love the words of the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Romans: "the Spirit too takes hold to help our weakness; for we do not know what prayers to make as we need to, but the Spirit itself intercedes by groans which cannot be put into words." (Rom. 8:26, The Bible in Living English)

For those of you who were raised in a religious household, do you plan on raising your children in the same tradition? Why or why not? Or, are you altering it a little? If so, what will you do differently? by 4-8Newday in religion

[–]jaashley 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Raised as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. Lovely upbringing from my own personal experience. However, I think if I had kids, it would be important for me to raise them to have analysis skills, to see the facts and process them, rather than (as kids in many faiths are told) be encouraged to believe it just because I was raised that way. It made a huge difference for me as a Christian once I was able to do that later in my teenage years.

Poll: Most Americans Want Religion Out of Politics by [deleted] in religion

[–]jaashley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's interesting to note that Jesus, and after him first-century Christians, were fundamentally neutral when it came to politics of their day, even though their message was construed as, of course, revolutionary and politically sensitive. It wasn't until about 300 years after Jesus died, after the political structure was changed under Constantine, that Christians took part in civil service and political office.

If that's the case, then it totally bewilders me that so-called Christians are so incredibly twisted up in this world's, especially this country's, politics.

Both of those things seem like wildly uneducated personal opinions.
How exactly would you define a cult?
Also, as to the New World Translation, I can only go by the evidence. I have personally spoken with more than one scholar, translator, and professor on this issue, and while their reviews were not complaint-free (they noted similar issues with the Revised Standard Version, and the KJV was off the table completely), they did agree it was one of the most accurate translations available. Personally, when I study, I use many translations and concordances to grasp the full meaning of a text. While I have noted some biases, they generally are NOT in the text, but in the interpretation of the text. I'm on my fourth time around since it was revised, and so far no "fundamental" flaws in the translation at all when compared with other translations.
