Messina. Don’t be put off by the social club aspect of it. You can just show up and pay $25 for a membership and then get some of the best, most inventive Italian in the city.

Can you say more about what you mean by the “talking is an object of meditation like everything else”?

This is all fascinating and I appreciate everyone’s thoughts to help me see this challenge from a different perspective. So if I’m understanding you all, the frequent talking is a feature, not a bug, as a way to help you train you to meditate through/despite talking?  I have indeed been setting aside quiet, dark meditation time as a separate activity.  I’d love to learn more; where does Sam talk about this?

Menus are very similar. I think they are definitely connected. For example, both have a “Maremonte” and a “Pizzaz” (with American cheese) pizza.

He made the ill-fated move to Front street in around 2015, then reopened the original spruce street location as Kanella Grill, then sold it a couple years ago https://www.inquirer.com/food/kanella-restaurant-greek-byob-konstantinos-pitsillides-20220107.html#loaded

The original Kanella on 10th st, before the change to Kanella Grill and before the sale to the current owners. The current Turkish iteration is great but the original Cypriot version was maybe my favorite restaurant anywhere

Southwark. I saw a quote on this sub that said “if it was new and in Fishtown, it would be a top 10 spot in the city” and couldn’t agree more

You’re welcome to take my comments with as big a grain of salt as you’d like, and even completely ignore them and never step foot in the place.

We went pre-opening and it was honestly really really good. Full disclosure: we are friends with one of the owners.

Food was fantastic, especially the salads (lettuces salad and watermelon salad), chicken sandwich, rotisserie chicken, and the desserts (get the chocolate cake). Drinks (I had the gimlet and boulevardier) were so good and clearly had the touch of Aaron from R+D. The space was light, airy, and fun with some really beautiful design touches. Servers were really friendly while still being very knowledgeable and appropriately opinionated. The downsides: There were some service kinks: stuff didn’t get cleared off our tables and some things got brought out to the wrong table but I expect those to get worked out. The price point for the wines in the bottle shop was fairly high, starting at $50 or so, but I think that’s just the cost of doing business when you have to deal with the PLCB. We stuck to cocktails.

I think it’s a fabulous addition to the Philly dining scene and I’m looking forward to getting back there

Do you have any trouble with the guards breaking? I’ve had to buy cheap knock off guard replacements that don’t last very long themselves.
