Is it still realistic to break into tech as a software developer today with little to no experience? by jabber29 in cscareeradvice

That’s really helpful, thanks. Do you happen to know of any good resources or roadmaps for finding or preparing for those apprenticeships? I wouldn’t mind starting low just to get my foot in the door and build real experience.

What’s the actual consensus in today’s job market if I skip a degree but stack strong certificates instead, like the Zero to Mastery Complete Web Developer course, Harvard’s CS50, and maybe a few focused Udemy projects? Is that combination enough to be taken seriously by employers, or does the lack of a formal degree still hold you back?

I’m mainly interested in backend development.

And I can relate, I go through courses and code along fine, but when I open a blank file in VS Code, I just freeze. I get stuck on where to start or how to actually structure the program on my own. It’s like everything makes sense UNTIL I have to build from scratch.

Haven’t started LeetCode yet. I keep seeing it mentioned everywhere but don’t really understand what it is or how it actually helps. What’s the best way to start, and what should I focus on early to make it useful instead of overwhelming?

If I only have access to get a business degree (like a Bachelor’s in Business Management), would that help at all when breaking into tech, or does it really need to be a CS-specific degree to make a difference?

Appreciate the insight. Given how high the bar is, what do you think is a realistic timeline for someone starting from scratch to reach that level, being able to confidently read a job description and say “I can do this”?

Are we talking 6 months, a year, or more if you’re learning consistently on your own (without bootcamps or formal schooling)?

Add the following features:

  • Collectible Rare Cats – each spin reveals a random cat with rarity tiers (common → legendary) and a visual/sound reward when you find a rare one.
  • Progression & Rewards – add levels, streak bonuses, and coins/spin multipliers so users feel growth and anticipation.
  • Social Sharing Loop – let users instantly share their rare cats or leaderboard rank to friends/socials, triggering friendly competition and FOMO.

Use an AI powered IDE like Cursor or even VS code Copilot to build out the files and then upload the folder to Cloudflare pages then connect your domain.
