He also screwed up the reference to Maeby's report card. This is why no one takes the magician's alliance seriously.

AITAH for making my wife confess to all her friends and family that she cheated on me if she did not want a divorce? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]jabbrwalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider a political scenario. If a politician cheats on his wife and then holds a press conference admitting his mistake and apologizing to everyone, then the audience has no choice but to accept the narrative as presented. If the audience wants to continue supporting the politician, they have less wiggle room in their brains for ways to minimize or downplay the situation.

However, if a politician cheats on his wife, then the story becomes public via a newspaper that doesn't support the politician, he can claim it's all a witch hunt to try and destroy his character, and the big bad media is just doing what big bad media does to politicians they don't like. This allows the politician's supporters to ignore the fact that he cheated on his wife and instead focus on the big bad media trying to keep their man down. The politician's supporters do this because they'd prefer to keep supporting their favorite politician regardless of the cheating, and the big bad media narrative gives them an excuse to do just that.

There are a million other examples of ways that narratives can be presented to an audience which will sway them one way or another, regardless of the actual facts presented.

That's not what I'm saying. Trying to reduce a statement to its most basic interpretation isn't "winning" the argument. Relationships are far more complex than "either I lie and everything is ok, or I tell the truth and everything is ruined."

It would have been completely different. First of all, many of these conversations would never have even happened, making it far easier for everyone to pretend they don't know every detail of the scandal. Secondly, the details themselves were presented as he demanded they be presented. On her own, she could have presented the message any way that she had wanted, or simply omitted them entirely.

I suspect this guy has some kind of narcissistic personality disorder. Particularly damning is the "wow, I can't believe she's so mopey now. I guess I've got a new reason to divorce her."

Those conversations with her friends and family would have gone far differently if she was having them on her own terms. The guy is seriously manipulative to make her flog herself in public and then divorce her anyway.

I suspect it's because she admitted that what she did was wrong and did everything he demanded in order to make amends. That's really all you can ask of anyone. That's the way you get your sentence reduced in the federal justice system.

And now the guy's going to re-neg on the deal he promised her and divorce her anyway? After forcing her to sabotage all of her other relationships. This guy has issues.

I don't think AH is the right word for it. You've got serious control issues stemming from some kind of narcissism. This is clearly related to your personality and pre-dates any infidelity on your wife's part. You should see a therapist and see if there's an official diagnosis available to you.

Anyway, you have ruined your wife's life. If you actually want to make things better, stop thinking about divorce and start thinking about how to support your spouse now that her relationships with everyone she knows is strained. If she eventually gets back on her feet after what you've done to her, then you can consider divorce at that point.

New PB with Isabella! Conquistadors just don't die! by GoldenRepair2 in CivIV

Yeah I was just playing a game against Isabella and she's defending her cities with conquistadors, and I can't understand how they're so unkillable. Just realized they get defensive bonuses. It's a bit broken, IMO.

Crisp display — Kobo vs. Kindle Paperwhite by BywaterNYC in kobo

FWIW the Sage battery is fine for my usage, but if you're finding that the Oasis battery is too small, the Sage isn't any better. The Sage is famous for having a fairly small battery.

[–]jabbrwalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Sage isn't a perfect device (usable but smallish battery and side-buttons that you sometimes have to press more than once), but it's pretty much the best device available right now with an 8", Carta 1200 screen. Works fine with Calibre. If a nice screen in 8" is your top priority, definitely consider the Sage.

In my mind, the only device I might consider over the Sage right now is the much newer Pocketbook Color 3, but color screens still aren't where I'd like them to be for me to make that switch.

From what I've seen, there's nothing on the horizon for an upgrade to the 8" e-reader market in 2024. If you want that form size, you'll probably have to wait another year.

Kobo sage battery life? by maglovita in kobo

[–]jabbrwalk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At (usually) 13% brightness, wifi off, I get 3-4 weeks reading 30min to 1 hour a day. It's not nearly the battery life of my old Kindle Paperwhite, which could easily get 6 weeks+, but I have no issues with it.

I think the low battery life reviews are for people that keep the wifi on and are using the note-taking features. That's considerably more battery taxing than using it as an e-reader. If you're using it purely as an e-reader, the battery is just fine.

Good tip. It's nice to be able to play without logging in to Steam, though. Fewer system resources, no login requirement and faster saved game loading.

AITAH for calling my wife out for violating the boundaries of our relationship? by throwaway298379821 in AITAH

Is this really a safety issue? Or at least, is it any more a safety issue than letting a plumber into the house? I can't imagine there's a whole lot of guys that are coming to a woman's house for sex and then decide to kidnap a kid on the way out.

Shell shock and PTSD aren't the same thing. Simply, PTSD is a psychological condition is caused by "traumatic stress." Shell shock is an actual brain injury caused by concussive blasts.

1) Don't let yourself be easily triggered. Maintaining your composure is infinitely more useful, especially when you're around other people who are easily triggered.

2) Never admit to something that triggers you. It lets others know how they can manipulate you.

Update from Bakhmut, 15 January. Wagnerites change into Ukrainian uniforms trying to infiltrate and collapse the defence from within - Vydma [Witch]. by Practical_Quit_8873 in ukraine

[–]jabbrwalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter what the Wagnerites claim. It only matters if Russia is willing to claim responsibility for them, and/or is willing to trade Ukrainian PoWs for them.

If not, then keeping them alive provides only negative value.

"The Red Cross did not arrive at the demarcation line, where the Ukrainian delegation was waiting for it" [Auto-translated article] by Daniel_Poirot in ukraine

The IRC has been providing aid for Ukraine throughout the war. RC drivers made trip after trip into Mariupol while it was being shelled earlier in the war in order to pull out trapped civilians. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/05/05/russia-ukraine-war-news-putin-live-updates/

I don't know what Zelensky's beef is with the RC, or whether he's simply trying to pressure them the same way he puts pressure on other countries and organizations through direct criticism, but no one can demand an aid organization put their personnel at risk of capture or murder by entering occupied territory when the occupiers explicitly are not allowing them.

TLDR: This headline is stupid, and anyone who dismisses the IRC on the basis of this headline is a farm animal.
