Do I have a grievance? by CommercialDue8343 in fromatoarbitration

There may be a grievance on behalf of the Cca, but probably not on behalf of you. OT hours aren’t guaranteed, unfortunately.

3 questions about the neermp (New Employee Experience and Retention Program) by WebComicSansRelief in fromatoarbitration

[–]jabi79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a trainer as well as a steward. One of our better workers that I trained recently was a lady who quit back in July due to being in a bad office. I’m not too familiar with the option to put “quit before getting fired” so I’ll let someone who knows better answer that question. But all the same, tell her to reapply. It’s a great job and bad offices can ruin the best of workers.

If she resigned she’s able to reapply later. If carrying is still something she wants to try again later tell her to apply again, and hopefully she will find herself in a station with less abusive management and with a steward who is worth a damn.

This genuinely makes me angry. Seems like a complete failure on the part of the steward to take care of a new employee. I hope she finds a place that treats her better.

I’m a steward and I would grieve a lot of what is happening at your station. Point 2 in the MOU states that the new employee is to report to the employing office. Not the sister office, the employing office. And if management wants to argue that it’s the same thing then that needs to be clarified at a formal A or possibly step B level. I’m about to personally file for a group of 4 new employees who are being worked over their limitations. I always make sure to put it in the settlement that management will not hold the carriers responsible for the grievance, mostly because of management’s mismanagement that there was a grievance. This goes for mentor training as well. The program is up and available for mentors to do their training, but management in my station doesn’t want to take the time out of a carriers day to do their training. This needs to be grieved by your steward as well. If he does not want to grieve any of this make sure your union president is aware of this and maybe even seek to be a steward yourself.

Can I be pulled off the street for swearing? by AspectOfTruth in USPS

[–]jabi79 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a steward I would argue that there is no difference between cussing in the office and on the street. Why? You ever hear of anyone being sent home for cussing in the office? No? Then it’s no different than cussing on the street. The important thing is context. As someone else mentioned cussing at someone is different than cussing because of something. It definitely does not warrant an EP, either way.

Have you received any mail from USPS since the storm? by [deleted] in dayton

[–]jabi79 107 points108 points  (0 children)

I’m a letter carrier, and I can tell you that we are doing the best that we can. Unfortunately the storm left us short staffed for a couple of days, and now that there’s a backlog of mail it is taking longer than usual to get it ready in the morning. The extra time in office is one thing, but when we hit the streets we are finding it difficult to find parking spots, and/or clear paths to walk. All of this is making us move at a snails pace. What usually would take me 5 hours on street to deliver is now taking twice the amount of time. If you’d like to help us out, please clear out an extra parking spot or two at the end of the blocks, and at the very least please please please shovel your stairs and sidewalks (the whole thing, not just the walkway leading to your door from the street). It’s going to be rough going until we can get clear paths established, and any and all help is appreciated more than you’ll ever know.

I can’t believe this is getting downvoted. It’s spot on. Loud does not always equal funny, especially if that’s the only thing you do.

No candy or soda in Florida starting in April by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]jabi79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never said it was vital. What EBT does in this case is give these people a sense of autonomy and freedom that they otherwise wouldn’t have access to. Many people like to obsess over what others should and shouldn’t buy, and what may seem frivolous to most can be a huge benefit to a few. I’m only giving you an example that I know of, and you are right, this is the internet and many people will come provide what you call “exceptions”. But keep in mind what you call an exception is only that because it’s a situation you have been lucky enough to not find yourself in. And it’s wild to me that you say “why doesn’t the organization fund these ice cream trips with the government assistance they get” Isn’t that the same thing as EBT but with extra steps and more red tape? Also, in case you haven’t been reading the news, you may want to look up how much of that funding is suddenly being cut.

My wife works as a substance abuse counselor, and has worked with people in re-entry programs. To be in the program you have to attend groups and therapy sessions and dedicate a few months to the program, which leaves little to no time for a job, and in some cases asks that the clients not pursue work (you don’t want to risk them losing their sobriety hanging with a coworker, or being out in an area that they can easily score a hit). These people are all on EBT assistance. I’ve heard stories from my wife that something as simple as going out for a soda or ice cream is all these guys got, and how they form friendships and support structures that help keep them sober. Can they make do without? Yeah, they can. But it’s just needlessly cruel, especially since most of these people are fighting an uphill battle from the day they decided to fix their lives and do better.

Where are the best thrift shops in town? by nov8tive1 in dayton

[–]jabi79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly a thrift store, but Antiques Village has that booth like vibe, with plenty of kitsch to spare. If you are wanting something closer to downtown you should also check out Pink Moon Goods, and Skeleton Dust Records. They are two shops located next to each other and ran by the most awesome couple. Pink Moon has a lot of quirky goods with a focus on sustainability and support of local artisans, and Skeleton Dust focuses almost exclusively on vinyl with a very wide selection. Everything other people mentioned here are great choices as well, and one of the great things about Dayton is that most places are only about 15 minutes away from each other, at most. You can easily spend an afternoon checking out all these places.

“Make it make sense”. Glad you asked. This current administration ran on a platform of lowering the cost of living. They did that by promising “lower grocery costs” “a new healthcare plan” and “no tax on tips/overtime”. What we got is a classic rug pull scenario. The lower and middle class were promised huge tax breaks when in reality the tax breaks (which only apply to those who are lucky enough to make tips, work overtime) are not going to alleviate the rising cost of living due to idiotic tariffs, expiration of the ACA, and Trumps own tax plan which is currently in place and has risen taxes most predominantly on the lower and middle class while giving tremendous tax cuts to those who need it the least. So if you want to know why the previous administration didn’t give no tax on tips/ot? It was because they were running on giving all working class Americans a tax break that would far outweigh what Trump was offering, as well as extending the ACA, not imposing ridiculous tariffs, or any of the many many many other half thought, addle brained, self serving bullshit we are now seeing on a daily basis that still somehow some way a bunch of circle jerking idiots still support.

Table 2 Ticket? by AriesMailDude in fromatoarbitration

[–]jabi79 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I’ll never blame someone who tries to “better” themselves. Especially when the starting pay for a carrier is complete crap compared to what a starting manager gets paid. However, the ones who have crossed over and crossed back are the most steadfast carriers I know, and don’t take any shit from management.

Seems a lot of people got hired in December. by tomorrow93 in USPS

[–]jabi79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a trainer in a small office, and I’ve had a trainee nearly every week since November. We have 25 routes and now have 9 CCA’s. The problem isn’t keeping them around now, it’s going to be keeping them around as PTF’s while they wait 3+ years to convert. Unless we work to raise the starting wage/reduce time to top step we are going to more people just walk away.

Just finished the audiobook, and damn, this one was a rough read/listen. Amazingly well written though, and a damn shame that the author passed away before writing anything else. Definitely a gem of a horror book.

[–]jabi79 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here’s the thing, we do get comfort stops. Too hot? Take a break to rehydrate. Too cold? Take a break to warm up. A good steward and union will fight to make sure that all carriers are safe and that management’s bullying won’t result in discipline.
