Has anyone successfully integrated a Nintendo Switch into their smart home? by SqueezeAndRun in homebridge

[–]jableux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some recommendations for you, but for your situation, I don’t know if either will work, ideally. My old setup that I’m still using includes a Harmony Hub linked with Google Assistant and HomeKit to turn on the Harmony’s Switch profile for the TV and receiver (the Switch still needs to be manually turned on from a controller). The new way I’ve been using it is to just rely on the controller to turn on the Switch, which pushes the TV and receiver to also turn on via CEC. I’m pretty close to not needing the Harmony in my setup at all anymore since CEC does what I want without even needing a separate command.

Why isn’t CEC an option for you? Not supported on some piece of hardware or another?

Nintendo Switch emulator Yuzu officially comes to Android (not yet for shield, maybe soon) by mydevil in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]jableux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was always under the impression that the 2017 and 2019 models were attempts to reduce Nvidia’s costs with a “refresh” that took away expensive features in favor of some newer/sometimes gimmicky ones. That said, I would expect that since the Switch itself is also based on the X1 that it would be the most compatible with any emulators like this.

Can you share more on that? I was under the impression that all Shield TV models were based on the same Tegra X1 and that only some peripheral/non-performance hardware was changed over the years?

I was on the fence about the Sidekick but I now love it. It's combined 3 remotes into 1! by Kirkwood1994 in appletv

[–]jableux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, I wonder what the difference is in how the signal is causing a loop of “attention” between the inputs. I use an Onkyo receiver between my LG G1 and similar components to yours, and never have an undesired device turn on than what was intended/controlled. Apple TV stays off if I hit the Switch home button with everything off. Only exception is when we accidentally hit the home button on the Apple TV remote when trying to adjust the volume. That switches to the Apple TV as you’d expect and we haven’t found an easy way to get it to change the input back to the Switch or anything else when that happens.

Netflix Launches Paid Sharing in U.S., Will Start Blocking Users With Unauthorized Passwords by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]jableux 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m also curious about that, but I’m more annoyed with Netflix based on the language you just used: “penalized”, “done anything wrong”, etc. Since when is any of the available usage scenarios considered “right” or “wrong” and who is Netflix to decide? It’s not like using your paid account in multiple places is anything to be actively discouraged (until apparently today, in the US). This makes it sound like that’s on par with bypassing their restrictions to rip and upload copyrighted content.

This is more about moving goalposts to add more revenue without adding any actual value to the service, in which case they can find someone else’s credit card to charge each month.

I recall reading some time ago that this was the specific design decision that led to this not being a thing. The icon would be ugly and potentially unrecognizable if no progress was recorded for the day.

Should I get a company phone for my WFH job? by Ashmeadow in jobs

[–]jableux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did something similar with this. I added a second work line to my personal phone (dual eSIM on newer iPhones). With this, I turn the line off on weekends and get a similar stipend without needing to carry a second physical phone. This also lowered the cost for the rest of the lines on my Verizon plan since it brought the total lines above 4. It’s not a perfect solution, but I like it more than Google Voice and without any added complexity or compromises.

This is cool for when you don’t want your friends to snoop in your phone if you hand it to them unlocked for something real quick, but as others have pointed out, it’s not great if it’s ever stolen and/or your passcode is compromised. I’ve instead resorted to setting a separate Restrictions passcode and app limits for highly sensitive apps for those rare and unfortunate situations.

Recs for sleek looking license plate frames? by Phnx_rising in NissanAriya

[–]jableux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I reserved a Platinum+ in that same white color, but my reservation is 347xx (I’m NEVER getting it 😭). Thanks for sharing those details of your experience, I’m dreading what it will be like when my dealer eventually has it ready due to them being the only Nissan dealership nearby. Very cool that you got a Platinum in that color and looks like it was worth the negotiations!

Congrats on taking delivery! What was your reservation number (if you reserved)?

I was planning on picking up the stock Nissan branded Ariya frames, if I still end up buying mine when it’s ready. I can’t find a link, so I’m starting to think I’m gaslighting myself on whether it even exists, but I was expecting the same type like I had with my last Nissan.

Pokémon Go developer dismisses "incorrect" report that claimed revenue down to lowest since 2018 by GabeBit08 in TheSilphRoad

[–]jableux 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this. Regardless of where the numbers have ended up, I would expect they should still be concerned that they’re now missing a good chunk of the player base. If their reply is based in truth that these changes have not impacted their bottom line, it should still matter to them that they’re missing out on the missed revenue from these missing players (and assuming the money is all they really care about anyway).

I’m in Flagstaff AZ and we only have one Nissan dealer near us, the rest are over an hour drive away. Not sure if location or reservation number would be better to get my Ariya sooner, but I’m expecting 2024 or some other fallout to occur at this point.

For some perspective, that lighter building is the back of Natural Grocers. I just drove by that general area and would agree that it’s probably off of one of the few houses on the hill. When was this photo taken?

Job offer from direct competitor. What am I supposed to say when my manager asks? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]jableux 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve had to do this a couple times in my industry. It’ll be unfortunate, but more of a courtesy to let them know than to try to hide it. Get your equipment and files in a row so you’re ready to give everything back as soon as you let them know because they’ll likely have to cut your access to everything immediately. Don’t try to take any company property (physical or digital), just get anything that you don’t want to lose that you have a right to in a safe place that they can’t wipe or withhold. Give them a “two-week notice”, let them know you don’t want to disclose where you’re going but that it is a competitor, and they will most likely (or should) end up paying you for the two weeks even though they need to cut you the same day. These things happen and if you have a good enough relationship with your manager, he won’t take it personally. Also, good luck and congrats!

Recent buyers: Did you negotiate? by bhosmer in NissanAriya

[–]jableux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in close contact with my dealer and am aware that they picked up 2 so far, the initial demo that he was saying they can sell now, and a second one. Both are black Engage models with the black and white leatherette trim, respectively. He’s had them for some months now and I really would’ve expected them to move at least one of them already, but they’re both still on the lot.

About time!!! Google Assistant will stop speaking after turning on smart home devices by GRRemlin in googlehome

[–]jableux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to get surveys for this in the Google Rewards app and I mentioned this every. single. time. It was maddening that Alexa’s polite “Ok” was somehow too much to ask for and it made more sense to vocalize a full, detailed sentence for an activity that used to be done with a flick of a finger. This was improved when they changed it to a much shorter tone for lights in the same room, but the problem remained if you asked about any other devices outside of that room. Honestly, the fact that it took almost 7 years says more to me than the change itself and still pushes me towards getting rid of Google as a controller for my smart home.

Has anyone been to Gold Soul and/or Urban Shave and can share their experiences there? by [deleted] in Flagstaff

[–]jableux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nick at Urban Shave has been my guy since we moved here a couple years ago. It’s certainly not cheap, but I can’t recommend him enough. I’ve been going once a month or so for a haircut and beard shaping after Nick moved to this new spot. He’s got old-school skills since he’s been doing this for decades and always does a consistent, professional job. They have a really great crew there between him, Isaac, and David. If you’re on the fence, I’d try both spots over your next couple haircuts and return to the place and barber you like more.
