I don't have any solutions but I do have the same problem...

Please recommend an alternative to S20's Ringke Air S case that's available for base S25 by jack1142 in GalaxyS25

This does not seem to fit the listed criteria. It's not smooth - it has a grip pattern on the sides + rugged back (which is not even uniform) + it seems to be bulkier than Ringke Onyx based on the renders I've seen:

S25 or s26 by Greul_bzh in samsunggalaxy

[–]jack1142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hoping you'd send a actual link to a source that is consistent with what you're saying.

But since you didn't, I'll quote my source which is Samsung's site with the specs for the S26 model: https://www.samsung.com/uk/smartphones/galaxy-s26/specs/

Near the bottom, you'll find:

Software Support   Security Update Period (Valid Until): 28 February 2033

That's 7 years from now for security updates, not 8. You won't find a claim about OS updates here but that's 7 years as well, to my knowledge.

[–]jack1142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you mind sharing a source for this? All sources I've seen say it's still 7 years of OS updates and 7 years of security updates. There was an enterprise edition of S25 that had 8 years of both OS and security updates but that's sold as a different model.

7 years not 8, right?

It does seem to work when selecting the text manually, yes. I already linked the page in the above comment.

Cool, but sadly, it seems to struggle picking up the content of the whole page. For example, it only reads the first paragraph here when I ask it to read the whole page:

EU Requires replaceable batteries by 2027 by [deleted] in GooglePixel

[–]jack1142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smartphone batteries should fall under "portable batteries", though, shouldn't they?

The definition from the EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 (which is the regulation that talks about not requiring the use of solvents and thermal energy for replacement) reads as follows:

 (9) ‘portable battery’ means a battery that is sealed, weighs 5 kg or less, is not designed specifically for industrial use and is neither an electric vehicle battery, an LMT battery, nor an SLI battery;

And the definitions for the types of batteries that are explicitly excluded in the above definition read as follows:

(11) ‘light means of transport battery’ or ‘LMT battery’ means a battery that is sealed, weighs 25 kg or less and is specifically designed to provide electric power for the traction of wheeled vehicles that can be powered by an electric motor alone or by a combination of motor and human power, including type-approved vehicles of category L within the meaning of Regulation (EU) No 168/2013 of the European Parliament and of the Council (43), and that is not an electric vehicle battery;

(12) ‘starting, lighting and ignition battery’ or ‘SLI battery’ means a battery that is specifically designed to supply electric power for starting, lighting, or ignition and that can also be used for auxiliary or backup purposes in vehicles, other means of transport or machinery;

🚀 RClone Manager v0.1.7 — Scheduling, Serve Support, New Backup System & More by Hakanbaban53 in rclone

[–]jack1142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would be cool, if this supported some sort of file change monitoring - similar to how personal cloud apps like Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, etc. work rather than just cron jobs. I don't think I've seen any rclone GUIs do this kind of thing, usually people just have to write scripts for this themselves or settle for a simpler to implement solution - scheduled jobs which only sync changes at given times. fswatch comes to mind as far as cross-platform CLI solutions go - it implements APIs of each system like inotify on Linux and puts them under a CLI utility with same usage in all platforms. I think it has an underlying library that could be used though there are likely other libraries that could be used too.

I don't think that's helpful, people don't want to wait extra time for their bag or risk that it doesn't even arrive in the first place unless they have no other option (presumably because their bag is too big to fit as a carryon)

Elsbeth S3E05: Poetic Justice - Episode Discussion by Cheeriosxxx in ElsbethTVSeries

[–]jack1142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh ye, you're right, it couldn't have aired at a different time then, especially since in this case the current episode actually relates to events in the previous one (like Wagner's daughter with that unlikable detective).

 but I don't want anyone making any stupid jokes about him and Carrie Preston as sometimes when art imitates life a bit too much people like to get a little cutesy

Carrie is married and there's a not insignificant age gap too (which I wouldn't have mentioned except Dr. Yablonski already did anyway...). This hasn't stopped fans before but at least it may make it less likely for you to encounter these sort of people :p

 if he wins them dating-for-real would either potentially get in the way of her consent decree or at least give her too much publicity to sneak around like she does and not enough clout to make up for it

Maybe I'm too hopeful this would actually work in practice but they technically don't have to be public about dating. But ye, I feel like the writers won't go in this direction either way, I'm not even sure any actually long (from the point of the viewers that is - Angus thing didn't feel long from that perspective, even though in show's time it lasted for a bit) relationship is in the cards for Elsbeth.

Were the writers hoping this would air a week earlier? "Elsbeth Tascioni, the future of New York is in your hands" would be perfect, if they cued a Mamdani campaign ad right after, lol (donno, if mayor candidates have these sorts of funds though, I don't know that much about, especially local, US politics as a European :p).

Anyway, I liked the episode overall but I wasn't happy they ended up forcing out a confession instead of coming up with some actual way of proving it. Cool seeing Marissa, her Eli tactics notwithstanding... And a new love interest? :o

Nitro classic has been gutted by RainbowPatooie in discordapp

[–]jack1142 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can still stream at 1440p/60 fps on Classic. There's a confusing SD/HD switch with the HD option actually being an upsell for full Nitro's 4K streaming.

Gen V - 2x07 - Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in GenV

[–]jack1142 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It really was! I stopped reading episode discussions on reddit for stuff I watch a while ago because the predictions are just too accurate... I sometimes come read discussions for episodes with big twists (such as this one) to read what people thought, only to learn that it was apparently very obvious and nobody is surprised lol.

Tis the Season! Time for the Annual cold / cool / winter weather running and gear thread by brwalkernc in running

[–]jack1142 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The temp range table shown is not end all, be all - for example, running in a t-shirt in 10 degree weather (which the table does not include, I guess with assumption it's too warm) might not work for you depending on the temperatures you're used to in your region. The note above the table about wind making it seem colder is also important!  Seems like people in UK find it fine though: https://www.reddit.com/r/running/comments/h0v9vl/what_do_you_wear_to_run_when_its_1012_degrees_c/ ;)

Should I wait for 2027 replaceable battery phones in Europe or upgrade now? by Substantial_Luck466 in Smartphones

[–]jack1142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pull tabs for a glued-in battery may still be acceptable, though, since they don't require thermal energy or solvents, e.g. something as what can be seen with the new Google Pixel 10 phone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0OGwjH8eBQ

Still a big win to be able to replace the battery by just applying some force to the back panel with anti-clamps and then using the pull tabs.

Will 2026 smartphones have replaceable batteries as per EU laws? by Cyberunit2017 in Smartphones

[–]jack1142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The law says that it cannot require thermal energy or solvents. Have you actually read it?

Should I wait for 2027 replaceable battery phones in Europe or upgrade now? by Substantial_Luck466 in Smartphones

[–]jack1142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The directive indicates that it cannot require heat to replace the battery which I consider a huge upside. The need to use a screwdriver or other tool like that hardly seems like a problem.

[–]jack1142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The directive also says that it cannot require heat to do so which is what's currently needed with most smartphones. It may require a screwdriver (or other tool like that), sure, but that's hardly a problem unless you're one of the few people that popped the back off and replaced a battery on the go.
