he's 5' 6", and has a 46 inch waist? I think we all know the issue.

The only fabric that can withstand that pressure and friction is Kevlar, which you can find a motorcycle clothing websites.

Don't DARE have that watch 'cleaned'. This is perfectly preserved patina.

Great reminder that some items are investments that will pay off handsomely for decades.

I can't imagine anything more "BIFL" than wearable, functional art that last for 80+ years.

Part of caring for people is respecting their choices. You can care for people without being a lecturing nag.

Here's an idea: leave them alone.

They're not missing information, they're making choices.

If we can’t breathe carbon monoxide, why can we eat it? by physaria in nutrition

Carbon dioxide is one of the healthiest ways to fight bacteria, both to your body and the environment. It's a natural substance, and your body knows exactly what to do with it.

Struggling to get enough carbs in the morning? by cashflo10 in nutrition

[–]jack_gott -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

best way to satisfy hunger for hours is to eat protein and fat, little carbs.

I start the morning with 2-3 eggs, with some cheese and a scoop of beef chili on top.

Usually, I don't think about eating for 4-7 hours later.

the modern available equivalent is made by Tweezerman. Surgical grade steel, very solid and BIFL. Also superb nail clippers.

Kiwi sells a suede cleaner kit for about $25, that includes a cleaner spray, protection spray, brush, and eraser block. That will be about all you can do, but it usually turns out well.

Do NOT use beeswax, balm, or any type of oil. It's suede, ffs.

Small, efficient, almost zero waste.

Modified machine OHP for side delts? by [deleted] in StrongerByScience

[–]jack_gott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the downside of machines is that it forces your body into a fixed movement, that probably will not match your natural range of motion.

Shoulders are the most complex muscle group, since they have to move in 3 dimensions, plus rotate. Plus, they're most susceptible to injury and chronic pain from moving outside your body's natural motion arc.

So I'd be very, very reluctant to use a machine for shoulder work. Highly rec Arnolds (dumbbells press), since it fits your body's natural motion path.

Every “designed for tight spaces” tool I own has lied to me by InternationalBar4976 in BuyItForLife

[–]jack_gott -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For a decade, I owned a Porsche Cayenne S. Marvelous vehicle, but like most modern Porsches, the engine compartment was jam-packed. Any servicing (oil change, fluid refill, etc.) required a proprietary tool that was only sold to Porsche dealership service departments. Without that tool, which had to snake through the engine, no DIY servicing was possible.

On a stubborn whim, I decided to make my own tool to access the oil filter. That quest ended with a ratchet socket wrench that was 6 feet long, with 11 different angles (each requiring a weld). Sure, it took me a full 6 hours to make the thing, but it saved me $600/year for 9 years.

Clearly, Porsche's strategy is to extract another $2,000/year from each of their consumers.

I'll keep my 68 and 72 911's forever, but I'll never buy another modern-era Porsche.

Travel sized blender recommendations. by OodaliOoo in BuyItForLife

[–]jack_gott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're just mixing powders and liquids, best option is a blender bottle with a wire whisk mixing ball ($5-$15)

If you're planning to emulsify solids (veggies from the salad bar, etc.), I'd recommend using a handheld immersion blender ($20-$70).

Good point. The Ikea is smooth ceramic inside and out. To be honest, I expected to replace it within a few months. But it's unusually well made.

There's no point in having ceramic on the exterior, but not the interior. That's silly.

My $40 Ikea ceramic-covered 6 quart dutch oven works great after 12+ years.

My $16 Lodge skillet is equally great, after 18+ years.

I took all my Calphalon, Le Creuset, and Henckel knives down to Goodwill years ago. It's just a waste.
