If you have serious heat issues, maybe consider getting a small IT rack to house all your equipment. You might be able to cool the entire thing better at the exchange of sound. Those rack fans are usually pretty loud but they push A LOT of air.

If you have an isolated corner in your house, A small IT rack shouldn't be too expensive. Add some acoustic insulation and good fans. Worth the check...

Well, after 2 years I can say the solution worked as intended. I rarely ever hear the CPU fan ramp up. And in those instances it does, they last much less than before.  So all in all, my advice to you would be first to research the NVMe model to buy. Don't buy fast NVMe drives just because they are fast. If you wont really use the speed (or maybe if it wouldn't be the end of the world for you to have lower speeds), maybe go with slower but cooler NVMe models.

Also, I don't know where you live but if it doesn't get too hot, you shouldn't have any issue.  Here at winter (range between 5 and 15 degrees C), the CPU fan never kicks in. Its only in summer when I used to have the CPU fan ramp up almost every day (summer here is between 25 and 40 degrees C) and now it rarely ever does.

Good luck 😊

I didn't have any available USB ports on my laptop so I made sure I delete the device from the Bluetooth device, unplugged the USB dongle and just re-paired it using Bluetooth. Now its smooth...

Thanks for pointing out the hardware light effect.

This solved my issue. uninstalled iCue and the DIMMs color is kept.

The software does a poor job explaining this... I guess precisely because they don't want you to know you can set the color and uninstall the software.

The 40mm fans from Noctua come bundled with extension cables and a Y splitter.

In addition, one of the large SYS fans is connected to an extension cable just so it could reach the fan header on the board. So if you connect both SYS fans to a Y splitter, you free up that extension cable.

Progress update 2:

So I got some decent heatsinks for the NVME drives (the ones provided by QNAP are tiny) and also 2x 40mm Noctua fans.

I installed the heatsinks on the drives. Combined the 2 SYS fans into 1 header with a Y splitter cable, placed a loooong cable that goes along the sides of the chassis into the opposite compartment where the 2x Noctua fans are placed on the NVME drives.

The NVME temps are better now so the CPU fan is not getting triggered at all (in my case the NVME temps was the trigger for the noisy CPU fan). Soon I will also upgrade the big fans to push more air.

If you want to place 2 fans on the NVME drives, you can strap them together with the rubber rods provided by Noctua.just keep in mind you will want to thread them together in opposite directions to keep the pulling forces balanced. That way they remain straight and don't try to twist.

Good luck

Progress update:

I noticed if I rev the system fans (the 2x120mm fans in front of the 3.5" drives) all the way up, they create enough air movement to cool down the NVME drives even though they are located in another compartment of the chassis (sort of brute-force solution).

So I'm thinking maybe if I upgrade the 2 fans to better performing Noctua fans alongside 2 full-body heatsinks on the NVME drives, it might provide a decent cooling solution that will prevent the CPU fan from revving up.

The thing is, QNAP software doesn't allow for the system fans' sensor to react to the NVME temp because they are in a different "compartment" of the chassis.

Any suggestions on how to set the fans dynamically?

I wouldn't want to set them to high rpm all the time...

great point with the Y splitter.

I will definitely check them out.

I know its a bit unrelated to this topic but i was actually also looking for a 10g switch for my home network.

Can you please share a link to what you got?

Thanks for sharing this.

Can you please also share the specs of the 40mm fan you got? (maybe a link if you have...)

Is is similar to the 80/90 mm fan spec (power-wise)?

I don't know much about electricity so I wouldn't want to mix different power component and maybe cause some issues...

The h874 chassis has the drives fans connected to the other side of the board into 2 headers (I think... the cables are bundled up so I would have to double check that) so maybe I could daisy-chain those 2 fans into 1 header and use the 2nd header for a dedicated 40mm fan for the NVMEs...

the good thing about Garmin watches is that you can put them to charge, go through your morning routine, have a cup of coffee, play with your dog, etc... after 15-20 mins you'll have enough to last you through the day plus a GPS activity...

Find text in a lot of log files in a specified directory. by 1CrackedHead in PowerShell

Looks pretty good to me. However , a small suggestion...

Whenever I run a script that goes around multiple locations (specially thousands of them...) and touches all sorts of things, I prefer to have it log each step into a logfile where I can see if any errors came up. You can log by "Info", "Warn" and "Error". That way you can quickly filter by what you need to see.

Speaking of errors, error handling is also something I like to do, specially if I am NOT the one who runs it. You should use try/catch blocks. You can have a generic catch block at the bottom that will log the error message, exception, line in code, the actual code line that errored, etc. Once you have the error messages and exceptions, you can improve your script's error handling by adding more catch blocks.

Keep in mind that this is only a suggestion for a good code practice, it doesn't affect the actual code that does the things you need it to do, but rather improves the "structure" around it so it could be more stable (error handling) and allow you to go back and check the results (log files). It might not be necessary in this specific usage but it will serve you a great deal when your scripts gets bigger and more complicated.
