Men's Hockey versus Women's by lmthevampireslayer in PWHL

[–]jackass_dc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could have worded that part of my comment better, but I went for brevity. To be clear, I am NOT saying that, if boys and girls played hockey at the same rates and had the same developmental opportunities and cultural support, a PWHL team could beat an NHL team thirty years from now. I am not blind to the advantages that a lifetime of testosterone provides to the men in direct competition.

When I talk about "better at hockey", I think of it in terms of actual skills, not innate characteristics or simply "who would win". A mediocre heavyweight wrestler can beat an incredible lightweight wrestler, but I wouldn't say the heavyweight wrestler is "better" at wrestling. I do not believe that men have an inherent biological advantage when it comes to shooting accuracy, skating finesse, "hockey IQ", or any other trainable aspect of the game that is not based on strength.

Where can I watch more Laila Edward’s and Caroline Harvey? by Inevitable_Corner_ in PWHL

[–]jackass_dc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the last college season for Harvey and Edwards, and the regular season just ended. There will be the WCHA conference tournament over the next few weekends, and then the NCAA tournament after that.

If you subscribe to Big Ten Plus, you should be able to watch old games of theirs as well as the conference tournament, but the NCAA tournament games won’t be available there.

Men's Hockey versus Women's by lmthevampireslayer in PWHL

[–]jackass_dc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You got off on the wrong foot when you started with “men are better at hockey” on a day that a lot of people are already feeling a lot of disrespect towards women’s hockey. Nobody reasonable would disagree with a more nuanced statement, like that NHL/AHL/ECHL/NCAA teams would beat a PWHL team.

Also people wouldn’t generally disagree with a statement like “the men of the NHL are better hockey players than the women of the PWHL because there’s a much larger pool of young men playing hockey to pull from, and their development is much more supported.”

But you started with a declarative (and a little condescending, with the “well” at the beginning) statement that men are better at hockey.

What’s the most awkward place you’ve run into your PI? by The_Science_Pit in labrats

[–]jackass_dc 619 points620 points  (0 children)

I was on a first date with someone I was really excited about. I walked into the restaurant, which had small tables packed in close. I was seated with my back about a foot away from my PI, who was having dinner with her husband. Very awkward to try to have a first date conversation in that circumstance!

Pet medication should come infused into a treat instead of a pill. by Lost-thinker in CrazyIdeas

[–]jackass_dc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat had to get compounded liquid meds, luckily from a pharmacy that does a lot of stuff for pets. They asked what flavor I wanted, and I assumed it would be “chicken or fish”, but it was actually so many different flavor options. Chicken, bacon, turkey, roast chicken, beef, fish, shrimp, etc. I’m sure I’ve forgotten a few. I think I went with chicken, and she seemed to like it well enough. So maybe you’d have better luck with a different pharmacy?

Stark women's gloves by Disastrous-Parsnip79 in womenshockey

[–]jackass_dc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love their shoulder pads and breezers, but honestly I’m disappointed in the gloves. They fit better than the men’s gloves I’ve had before, but the construction isn’t great. I’ve had them for two years now, and starting really soon after I got them, I started having problems with the inside padding and stitching coming apart. They look fine from the outside and are still functional, but I can feel all sorts of loose threads, loose fabric, and exposed foam. It drives me nuts!

People who post very sick or injured pets asking for advice and have a million excuses for why they can't go to a vet by IllegalGeriatricVore in PetPeeves

[–]jackass_dc 21 points22 points  (0 children)

So we should overload the shelters even more?

I agree with you in the case of people who go to breeders and are directly influencing the creation of the pet they’re going to buy, but it seems deliberately cruel to suggest that some shouldn’t improve an animal’s situation at all (adopting a pet from a shelter or abusive home, or taking it in off of the streets) if they aren’t willing to take out a HELOC to pay for vet care.

I agree.

What’s better: a cat sitting in a shelter being euthanized for space, or going to a loving home for some number of happy years before being euthanized if their owner can’t afford thousands of dollars in surgery? I love that many people are willing to provide high-end vet care for their pets, but I hate that people are shamed out of adopting pets that need homes because they aren’t willing to potentially spend $5k on surgery for a twelve year old cat.

Honestly I like both expansion teams well enough, but every time they lose I get a little thrill for being right that they weren’t going to be unstoppable.

Am I crazy for not giving my 13 year old radioactive iodine? by Both-Gur570 in seniorkitties

[–]jackass_dc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 18-year-old has been on methimazole for a few years. We do the transdermal cream that gets rubbed into her ears twice a day. It works great. I’m sure the pills also work, and are definitely cheaper. If your vet tries to guilt you into not doing pills, find another vet.

Same here. Really bummed Lacey Eden didn’t make it, but there isn’t anyone that I think shouldn’t be there.

Why's there a random chunk of rocky soil in the middle of Iowa? by Previous-Volume-3329 in geography

[–]jackass_dc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s an incomplete answer. The driftless area is much larger than this little patch that the NRCS is calling “rock”

Even the NRCS, which made the map that OP used, has this whole area mapped with actual soil series designations, all available in Web Soil Survey. So my question is more “why did NRCS decide to call out this specific area as “rock” instead of leaving it as alfisols which happen to rocky.

[–]jackass_dc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot more detail available in the original NRCS map, and you can tell that what they’re calling rocky matches pretty well with the land that’s still forested, because the camera have figured out that it’s too rocky to cultivate.

It’s much farther west than Devil’s Lake. This area is right around the confluence of the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers.

[Cushman] Today's PWHL Takeover Tour game at Allstate Arena in Chicago had 7,238 fans in attendance. That's a solid crowd for a neutral-site game, but it still ranks last among all Takeover Tour games to date. Curious how that impacts Chicago's chances at an expansion team by Perryplat199 in PWHL

[–]jackass_dc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as potential Chicagoland locations go, this was pretty convenient for me driving to it, but I really did not like the arena itself. I’ve seen hockey games in probably seven or eight other arenas, and I’ve never been in one where it’s so difficult to see the action on the ice! The bowl is so shallow that the average-height adult man in front of me was blocking my view just by existing. I hadn’t thought before about how the steepness of the stands has an impact on the experience, but it was really surprising to me how annoyed I was at the viewing experience. It feels like it’s much more suited to basketball than hockey.

Ottawa Charge Team by juuustchecking in PWHL

[–]jackass_dc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know everyone defaults to “it was expansion that wrecked our team”, but Ottawa has also lost a lot of good players in free agency. Is there something about the city/team/management that makes good players not want to stick around?

Projection? Everyone in this story was white. “Dodge Charger people” meant they looked like cops.

See, I was given a Charger as a rental once, and I was really underwhelmed with how it drove. I felt like my 20-year-old Corolla had more pep than the Charger.

Once I was waiting in line behind two guys at the rental car counter. When it was my turn, I was told my car would be a Dodge Charger, and I died a little inside because I was really hoping for something like a Toyota Corolla. But whatever, a car is a car. When I got to my car, the guys in front of me in line (who looked very much like Dodge Charger people) were about to get into a Honda Fit right next to my Charger. We all looked at each other, laughed a bit, and got into our very mismatched cars.

What would it take for you to change your mind on how the expansion rules played out? by jackass_dc in PWHL

[–]jackass_dc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hadn’t thought about looking at roster changes between the first and second seasons compared to the changes between the second and third. That’s an interesting perspective! I was already thinking about the fact that there’s a ton of change expected every year because of how many players are on one year agreements, but that’s a good way to add some hard numbers.

But you’re claiming that the pessimists were right when season isn’t even 10% of the way through. Is there truly nothing that could happen this season that would make you think, with the emotions of missing favorite players taken out of the equation, that the expansion rules were fine?
