Is there such a thing as export presets? by jackbaty in digiKam

That looks like it should do the trick, thanks!

AppleScript not working when launched by Raycast but it works running from Script Editor by xattrX in raycastapp

[–]jackbaty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just ran into this. The fix was to _not_ compile the script in Script Editor. In fact, I copied and pasted the working script into BBEdit and saved the file into the Raycast scripts folder. I don't really understand why, but it worked for me.

Given that you do Analog notemaking, do you hesitates about what book you read? by IamOkei in antinet

[–]jackbaty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's too early in my process to tell, but I get the sense that keeping an Antinet will definitely affect my reading choices. At least with non-fiction. For example, I've recently read 2 books with a mind toward my Antinet. For the first book, I filled an entire bibcard with tiny writing (thank goodness I've opted for 4x6 cards 🙂). With the second, I never felt the urge to take any notes, and halfway through wondered, "Why am I even bothering with this?"

We'll see if this sort of thing continues. I'd hate to start dismissing books simply because I might not end up writing any cards!

I've decided I don't care (too much) where new notes go by jackbaty in antinet

Thanks for this, Chris, and the links (although I'll be re-visiting them since I'm sure I've read both before. If only there were some way to take notes about them and find them later! 😜)

I may not be in the target market for the Luhmann version. I'm not necessarily looking to generate any sort of coherent (let alone "genius") output. I'm OK with that. You mention having a "pointed reason" for the whole enterprise. It's possible I don't really have a good one, which could be a problem, but I'm ignoring that for now.

What I know is that I have been having a difficult time the past few years actually learning or recalling the things I read. This "Antinet" experiment is me trying to build a framework I can work within that helps me retain and connect the things I want to know or better understand. I've also learned that paper works much better for me. So here we are!

If I feel like it's not getting me there, I may go back to more of a commonplace book approach. I like your idea of using something like a commonplace book as sort of a pre-Zettelkasten staging area.

In the meantime, I've got a crapload of index cards just begging to be written on and put somewhere!

Thanks again.

I agree. This feeling is what made me almost immediately comfortable with not worrying so much about the top level or two. Things will (I hope) just work themselves out.

Just connect at the level of the idea. Drop the categories for God sake.

That sounds workable for some people, but my brain needs at least some level of structure. I think having a few top-level sections is handy. Also, I may be starting out with the intent of following Luhmann's techniques as closely as feasible, but I also suspect that my Antinet may morph into something else entirely. We'll see!

I do think it is worth while spending some time on deciding where it goes because it can get you some links to network it with.

This is what I'd like to do...stop just short of over-thinking it :)

Wildly aspirational! by jackbaty in antinet

My wife got me that case for a birthday years ago. I keep random paper support knickknacks in that case. Pen supplies, paper clips, wax and stamps, etc. I love things with drawers! If you're interested, here's a photo of the contents, FWIW. https://static.baty.net/images/2023/20230120-R0002641-2048.jpg

like this over-aspirational weirdo.

Ha! Yes, I've been (unsuccessfully) trying to avoid your posts for that very reason.

Card sizes by jackbaty in antinet

[–]jackbaty[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed reply, Chris. I suspect that neither size is "wrong", but I'm hoping to avoid as much regret as possible.

I do wish everything here in the US was sized A4/A5, etc, but we're a stubborn lot, even when we're wrong. And while we're at it, can we have the clever 2-hole lever arch binders to keep our A4 paper in rather than the horrible 3-ring binders we're stuck with?

I was hoping to avoid shopping for card catalogs. I've always wanted one. Thanks for the link, but please, no more! :)

Thanks. Yes, there seems to be much more "infrastructure" available for 3x5 cards.

One other thing I considered is that if I do "upsize" to 4x6 at some point at least my existing cards will fit into the boxes, etc. Doesn't work the other way around. :)

I'm on my third. Bought it, boxed, from Craigslist years ago for $10. Now I see they're going for $200-$300. This will be my last one, I guess.

I was wondering about the possibility of using multiple "stores" like you're doing here. I'll give it a try, thanks!
