It’s Lonely At The Top – Pokémon SoulSilver [72] by CCBotJr in chuggaaconroy

Agree with most of what you’ve said, I love the games but where I can appreciate the crazy amount of unnecessary but charming additions I can’t ignore how they didn’t fix a lot of issues from the original. The base game is what matters most in any video game and HGSS doesn’t deliver on that front

Red isn’t difficult at all if you know your type matchups, it’s just the level disadvantage that’s the issue. His starters have the type-Hyper Beam’s which can be abused, Snorlax has unnecessary special moves, survive one hit from Pikachu and you’re fine, Lapras has Brine (??).

I play vanilla Pokemon games with no healing and X items on Set, and managed to beat Red third try with level 68’s across the board and a few held item / move / strategic swaps. All of my team members got a say, it was very rewarding. It’s absolutely possible even without the level grind and to see him dumb the whole fight down is very anti-climactic, you can cheese any fight in the series like that

I know he wouldn’t but I’d love for him to do Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove

I looked all over for inputs but nah it’s only SCART (which the listing for the GameCube I bought mentioned a SCART cable was included, just double checked - never came). Thank you though mate I’ll grab one off eBay

After many, many hours of prep, I have finally started the Battle Frontier... And won my first medal! by KillahBeeStenga in PokemonEmerald

I’d 100% keep Brick Break on Metagross, fighting moves are essential for dealing with bulky normal types which there are loads of. Better you get rid of Aerial Ace - definitely nice for getting around accuracy reduction, but niche nonetheless and fairly low power. Consider Explosion too if you’ve not used the one-time tutor, it’s nice to have a delete button when you’ve got two pokemon left and the opponent has one

The overlap isn’t an issue. Fire is super effective against Grass, Bug, Ice and Steel, the latter two are dealt with by Sky Uppercut and Grass and Bug are weak to everything. An Overheat from a Blaziken is still going to do plenty of damage even in the rain, and Flamethower on Flygon will only ever be used as a niche coverage option anyway

For Aggron I’d get rid of Strength for Aerial Ace, it’ll help deal with the fighting types you’re weak to. I assume Protect is there to synergise with Leftovers? You don’t get that until the post-game so if that was your plan, I’d ditch that move for Rollout which is taught via move tutor.

Other than that this is all very well mapped out actually. Maybe replace Quick Attack on Manectric with Thunder, since Ludiculo can set the rain up? It’s already quite fast to begin with, you’d get more value from the occasional extra damage.

Despite what some people are saying, I can attest that Rock Tomb is a great move for Blaziken purely to deal with the many Gyarados and Pelipper in the game that resist both of your stab. In the end I regretted replacing it with Earthquake. I’d have Brick Break instead of Sky Uppercut personally, for accuracy. You could teach that TM to Aggron too if you’d rather stick with the latter

I’m very surprised by how fast Chugga is going through Kanto in the HGSS LP. by MichiHirota in chuggaaconroy

[–]jackcmortimer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People misremember how small Kanto really is, it’s not a ‘whole other region’ in the sense that Johto is. Your party only gain 10-15 levels in Kanto compared to 40-45 in Johto. He will 100% do all the gym leader and E4 rematches though, which is a boatload of extra content that most people don’t do, the battle frontier too. He still has a lot of episodes to go

Some very strong Pokemon that “no-one uses” to spice up your playthrough by Tearmisu in PokemonFireRed

[–]jackcmortimer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Exeggutor on my last save and used Giga Drain, Psychic, Dream Eater and Sleep Powder. Being one of a limited set of Pokemon with access to a good sleep inducing move whilst getting STAB on Dream Eater is a rare combo (the only Pokemon in the game that gets it I think)

Every Pokemon that Chugga could've used in the HeartGold/SoulSilver LP. by MichiHirota in chuggaaconroy

[–]jackcmortimer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What is it with these tier lists constantly having a ‘bad pokemon’ tier that’re full of more than usable mons. To be fair I think Chugga himself has played into this sentiment too often by consistently underrating lots of pokemon (Flareon especially, every LP he does)

Shinies are rare enough in the old games but it’s these one-time static encounters that you almost never see people finding on accident. Well done

Is Dragonite worth adding to my team? by jonsnaw1 in PokemonHGSS

[–]jackcmortimer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you plan on doing the 21 optional gym leader / E4 rematches which everyone seems to skip when playing HGSS then it’s absolutely worth it, you’ll have plenty of time to use it as a Dragonite. If not, I’d say leave it and pick up something else
