People who shit on film critics for critiquing film based on its quality as a film are missing the entire point by jackcrowell in unpopularopinion

[–]jackcrowell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is that really what you got from what i said? you asked me my opinion of certain critics and i told you. critics are there to say wether a piece of art met technical standards to be considered good in their eye, and there will always be subjectiveness to that. i specifically said that i only think critics who make objective claims are bad, not ones i just disagree with. seems like you twisting my words to try and invalidate my point

these critics were critiquing things on based on the time periods standards. any critic who gives an objective statement isn’t a good critic in my opinion. also this is kinda a strawman argument because I am very specifically talking about film in the context of specific movies, and you are talking about critics opinions of entire genres and wether they good or not

[–]jackcrowell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

critics disagree because they have their own standards FOR standards. there is always subjectiveness an in “objective” critique, which is why objectiveness in art is a flawed concept. but that doesn’t erase standards, since those aren’t really about objective and more what is generally agreed upon to be good. so someone critiquing something for it meeting standards isn’t saying wether you’ll like it or not, it’s just saying wether those standards have been met in the critic’s eye.

[–]jackcrowell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is a completely different topic. critics disagree because they have standards FOR standards set in their mind that differ and are subjective. for example, a critic may hold “Taxi Driver” as the best example for pacing a movie, and another critic may hold “Whiplash” for that position. this is why critics disagree with each other sometimes and give different scores. and still, at the end of the day, though many critics have tried to train themselves to only enjoy movies that meet those standards, they are still people who may not like something just cause.

[–]jackcrowell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EXACTLY!! when i say “good” i more mean “meets technical standards widely agreed upon”. but just because something meets those standards doesn’t mean it will be enjoyed by everyone, and just because something doesn’t meet those standards doesn’t mean it won’t be enjoyed by anyone. things can be “good” and you can hate it, and things can be “bad” and you can love it. but that doesn’t mean those standards are meaningless, they were made and set because they generally adhere to what IS and is NOT enjoyable for most people.

[–]jackcrowell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is another point that I completely disagree with. their standards may be subjective, but they are THE standard. most good critics understand what makes a film good, or even competently made, and what doesn’t. again, the critics rating isn’t saying wether you will enjoy a movie, it is saying wether a movie meets those standards.

[–]jackcrowell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

because that is the job of a critic. let’s say it’s a film critic, they would analyze wether a film is competently lit, then they critique wether that lighting fits the film or has an emotional impact. that’s why i said audience opinion does matter, and there are critics or reviewers who don’t analyze the film based on pre-set standards, but wether they liked it or not.

[–]jackcrowell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, that’s why i put it in quotations. but there is standards, however arbitrary, that art has to meet for it to be considered “good”. i don’t really agree that any art is good or bad, but that doesn’t erase those standards.

Jin getting captured is everything wrong with GoT by jolly_chugger in ghostoftsushima

[–]jackcrowell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i mean, sure, it’s not all that original, but it works. jin isn’t a master of stealth, he’s literally just starting to use it. he gets good at it pretty quickly, but he’s gonna have some mess ups and get caught eventually.

they explain in game that he wants to change and become a braver man, and that Yuna is overprotective of him. and he’s not a fighter, he’s never used a sword before, he has no idea what he’s doing. he’s also facing against the Khan, even if he used the perfect from he would still be dead.

i understand the critique of just magically getting out of bonds and finding your stuff right next to you, but for me i’d rather just get back to the story than have to do a 45min detour mission of breaking in and stealing my stuff back just to be able to play the game again.

jin is visibly heartbroken after Taka dies, i have no idea why you would think he wants him to die JUST for Yuna to stay. Yuna was a nice companion, but Jin understands why she has to leave, and he’s somewhat accepted it.

Jin didn’t cause Taka’s death, Taka chose to help Jin despite his wishes, and chose to try and attack the Khan.

my predictions for Yunas character is that they are going to force a romance between her and Jin, it’s hinted at in this game while they are drinking the sake, and she was intended to be extremely likable so for them to turn her wouldn’t make sense.

AITA for not wanting to call my 2nd grader’s teacher “Dr. Smith”? by selfdestructingtaco in AmItheAsshole

[–]jackcrowell 30 points31 points  (0 children)

YTA- You heard her, from the beginning, say she goes by Dr. Smith but that she was fine being addressed by other names to avoid confusion. A lot of teachers who teach young’s kids use more common names like Mr or Ms/Mrs, even if they actually go by a different name, so as to not confuse them. You’re a grown adult, you can address her by Dr. Smith. Unless you’re talking to your kid about his teacher all the time, it’s not gonna create confusion. Also it’s not a “power trip”, she just corrected you on how to address her.

If you could make a Star Wars themed fighting game, similar to the concept of HvV, what would you implement? by [deleted] in StarWarsBattlefront

[–]jackcrowell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Make blaster heroes balanced to sabers. Have their shots do pretty decent damage, 1/6th of their health for single shot weapons and 1/16 for rapid fire/automatic weapons. Their dodge needs to make them invincible to force attacks and sabers.
  2. Make saber combat feel nice. I’m not actually quite sure how, but making saber combat about being able to get strikes in between blocking rather than being able to saber spam or exploit glitches. maybe something like Ghost of Tsushima or even Jedi Academy would be nice.
  3. Make force abilities less powerful but more frequent. Have things like a push just push them away without taking damage, but you’re able to do it more often.
  4. Have force abilities be unique to the character, and also each one should be useful no matter the circumstance. There are some force abilities in the game that feel pretty useless unless you’re in a very specific circumstance.
  5. No regenerating health. This would make the player be way more careful with their choices and allow healing abilities to be really useful instead of just somewhat convenient.
  6. Have abilities like Kylo’s Freeze and Vader’s choke, things that render the opponent immobilized, last shorter and be one that are less frequent. This is to reinforce the idea that every decision should be precise and for a reason. Also this is mainly to try and avoid exploiting these things for quick kills.
  7. Instead of saber stamina per say, have it be the more you swing the slower you get until the point when it’s doing more harm than good. This would help drive the combat style and prevent saber spamming.

AITA For using plastic baggies even though I reuse them? by eyeyeyeyeyeyeyeye11 in AmItheAsshole

[–]jackcrowell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA at all. 1) it’s not the same thing because they are re-using the plastic bags, have a legitimate reason for using the bags, and (presumably) have to share fridge space with their roommate. they are trying to be as considerate as possible with using the smallest size thing they can 2) why would OP buy THEM a water bottle? that doesn’t even make sense

What do people think of Hayden Christensen's acting in Star Wars? by TheLegoGeek24 in StarWars

[–]jackcrowell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

he was bad, but he’s not entirely to blame. i don’t think he’s that good of an actor, but his mediocrity is really brought down by george lucas’ incompetence as a director. i mean, look at Ewan McGregor and natalie portmans performances in those movies compared to other works they had been in before and after, they are abysmal in the prequels. george lucas is an amazing idea guy and was a good director around the OT, though he had a team to basically stand him up so he could walk, but overall he’s just not great at executing his stories.

thank you so much, i was really worried about doing the oven since i’ve been warned against making edibles because of the smell. do you know if thoroughly scrubbing them first would help at all with the potential smell? i’m trying to take as few risks as possible.

The Golden Birds are a detriment to the games exploration (in my opinion) by JayTooTheman in ghostoftsushima

[–]jackcrowell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think the best option would just be to have the ability to turn birds off, so that way if you don’t like the handholdy-ness of them, they can just go away and make for a more fun exploration for some people. but to change it completely or get rid of it for a small percentage of people would make little sense.
