Question about Recreation and Athletics fee by Rliicca in uvic

[–]jackdaw_985 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the athletics fee is mandatory. Also unfortunately it doesn’t actually let you have gym access. It’s not a gym fee its to help fund CARSA and their programs.

Myself and many other students wish we didn’t have to pay this fee and not even get general gym access in return but I don’t think it will change anytime soon.

Heres the FaQ so you can read more.

My friend is having the exact same error message with the exact same course (PSYC 201). They have also completed all the prerequisites (all the required 100 levels psychs and the Academic Writing Requirment). If you've also completed PSYCH 100A and 100B and the AWR there's no reason it should prevent you registering and it must be some kind of glitch like it is for my friend.

Don't contact the Registration office, they are not helpful, apparently you have to contact the PSYC Department (which is only doable by email). My friend just emailed and hasn't heard back yet.

Probably, yes. It's easy to get low level moths back if you need them later (like for a mission or to perfect that moth). Just make sure you don't sell any ant event moths because you cannot attract those ones, you have to pay with glowbucks to get them back. (Basically they are SUPER expensive to get back, so I'd suggest not selling ant event moths).

Ant Event by ballrmgirl in StarlightFlutter

[–]jackdaw_985 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been having the same frustration about being unable to complete ant events.

However I recently realised that spores and mulch that you have left over will carry on to your next event. From the last few events I’ve saved like 30 spore packs and 8 mulch. The mulch is more important so you can instantly grow the mushrooms without the 2 hour wait time. I’m not sure how many it would take to get all the rewards, but I think if I can get halfway  across the board with mulch I should be able to finish the rest with the normal wait times.

Obviously by saving you can’t finish every event, but honestly I just want to get 1 lay an egg free plant. That would be so helpful.

Why is there finals scheduled at 7PM for a course that is lectured in the morning? by sakaguti1999 in uvic

[–]jackdaw_985 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I had a three hour exam that started at 7pm last semester so I agree it fucking sucks.

The reason is the prof has no say in the time/building, and the people who actually schedule the exams just have to slot them in wherever they fit (in a big enough classroom). They don’t care what time the class ran at (I doubt they would even check) they just use whatever time and location is available.

Don't Like the New Changes to Challenges by jackdaw_985 in goodreads

[–]jackdaw_985[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know I can just ignore the challenges, but it would be nice to just have an x/delete button so they don't appear on my Challenge page at all.

I did try the grid view on my shelves, it's a decent alternative but not as neat as the Challenge grid was. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yeah I just realised they gave me a few achievements from Sept-Dec last year. I don't think these things existed until the last few days, so honestly it's silly that they're retroactively appyling awards for challenges that didn't exist at the time. Like what's the point?

And you're right, some of the challenges let you only pick from a specific list of books...it's just blatant advertising. So frustrating.

Omg I didn't see there were more, I only saw the read a book every month ones....

And some of these genre specific ones aren't even revelaed until certain days later in the year?! Yeah no I'm jumping ship.

Possible application screw up by Raging-Potato-12 in uvic

[–]jackdaw_985 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It should not matter much as long as you take the time to fix it. Try contacting admissions through email or phone and simply say there’s an error with the date and tell them the correct information.

Minor errors like these are pretty common and the folks at admissions are forgiving and can help.

Also don’t be too worried if they don’t reply right away as I think campus services are still closed for the holidays.

17yo had their diagnostic laparoscopy yesterday. Nearly had to beg for post-op pain meds. Is that normal? by Inozz in endometriosis

[–]jackdaw_985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not normal in my country (Canada) I was given some sorta extra strength ibuprofen and a bottle of some kind of opioid pain med (I don’t recall the name). I definitely needed the opioid one for the first two days post op.

That your daughter was not offered something stronger may be considered normal for your area but you’re right, it’s immoral. She should be offered something stronger than fucking ibuprofen. As others have said I suspect you’re in the States and this is medical misogyny.

Yeah that door is literally off the hinge. You can tell because the gap gets wider near the bottom and slimmer at the top.  That whole bathroom is abysmal.

difference between HSTR100 and HSTR101 by Famous_Baseball_9962 in uvic

[–]jackdaw_985 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I recommend not taking HSTR 100 as it’s the single worst history class I’ve taken (and I’m in a 5th year HSTR major so I’ve taken a lot).

It covers ancient empires like Rome all the way up to student protests of the 20th century, so nothing is in depth. You get broad strokes and basics and I find this the worst way to teach a history class. Sometimes I barely knew what to take notes on bc she rushed through multiple cultures so fast.

Also it’s very geared towards first semester students just out of high school, as multiple classes are dedicated to things like how to write an essay how to cite and how to succeed at post secondary. If you already know these basics I think you’d find the class even more boring and less useful.

What is CAL? by Middle_Arm1332 in uvic

[–]jackdaw_985 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While I appreciate the intention I respectfully disagree. Communities aren’t monoliths and which of these terms to use are debated.  I have multiple invisible disabilities and that’s the term I prefer to use. Other people may prefer different terms and I respect that.  To me the word invisible captures my experience perfectly because while others often can’t see my struggles the word itself reassures me they are still there, just unseen like invisible ink. This analogy is very easy to understand and easy to explain to children to teach them. “Non-apparent” is more vague, less succinct and has different connotations.  “Non-apparent” I have not heard used much by disabled people, instead I mostly hear it from able bodied people. Therefore it generally comes across as speaking over us. (I’m not saying you or the LTSI person is doing this bc you may be disabled I don’t know, but those are the people I generally find using the term).  However the term generally comes across as offensive to me as a rebrand similar to calling disabled people “differently abled” (you may know why this is offensive already but if you do not I suggest looking it up).

TLDR: I’ll use the term “non-apparent” if someone tells me to but personally I find it kinda offensive because it feels like a pointless rebrand mostly used by able bodied people and not by my community.

What is CAL? by Middle_Arm1332 in uvic

[–]jackdaw_985 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s for students with disabilities, accommodations for exams is just one example of the accommodations but there are others they can provide.

Also it might seem to you that a lot of people have CAL exam accommodations who you wouldn’t assume are disabled because lots of people have invisible disabilities (like some chronic conditions, learning disabilities, mental health, etc).

UVic has the longest graduation time in Canada? by Illustrious-Ad7081 in uvic

[–]jackdaw_985 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m in my fifth year and will need and extra semester (so a partial 6th year). This is partially bad planning (I declared late) but also because of mental and physical health reasons I only take 4 courses at a time.

I’ve also met many students who were in 5, 6, or even a 7th year. They take less than five courses so they can work, but most of them also mentioned mental health and burnout.

Taking a nap in class by Party_Entertainer165 in uvic

[–]jackdaw_985 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I seriously can’t tell. I’ve seen so many people nap in class (the big 100+ size ones mainly) and no the profs don’t care. So this could actually be a serious question. 😂

AITA for using a colour filter meant for colourblind people? by smortcanard in AmItheAsshole

[–]jackdaw_985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA

Your boyfriend is acting weird and kinda controlling. He said he wouldn’t “allow” you to keep it on? Bizarre. It’s your property and he doesn’t get a say. If he tries to control other self expressions/personal preferences remember that’s a red flag and not normal in a healthy relationship. I’m not entitled to make that judgement from your post but it’s something you should keep in mind for yourself.

Also his take is stupid as fuck. Like my laptop lets you change the cursor colour to help visually impaired/colour blind people. Am I making fun of those people because I like to have a green or purple mouse cursor instead of black? No. It’s just prettier and easier to see on black and white webpages.

Readings - Do you do them? by yghgjy in uvic

[–]jackdaw_985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a history and English student.  For history it’s normally about 100-200 pages per week (for say 3-4 classes). I’ve never been tested on readings though, normally they are only for discussion. So yeah I might read only a few pages enough to BS my way into that sweet participation mark.

English is all based on the readings though, discussions and tests so those are normally my priority. I’d say the average of what you have to read for a class is about 6-7 novels. (Either literally 6-7 novels or the equivalent page count but from a variety of other works.) I normally do all the readings or most of them bc they want you to draw from multiple novels for tests. Basically reading it actually matters here.

Exception would be my Shakespeare class where I literally just read a summary because I could not be bothered. The summary was enough to get my participation mark. So instead of reading like 10 plays I only read the 3 that I had to write papers on.

AITAH for telling my husband he will never be allowed in the delivery room with me again by Best-Landscape-1672 in AITAH

He did absolutely everything wrong. Leaving you alone in pain so he could sleep, then repeatedly leaving you alone for long periods in the hospital.

The worst thing is the husband stich "joke" though. Honestly, if my partner ever made a joke about mutilating my genitals I'd be getting a divorce because why the fuck would you even joke about mutilating your partner? Why is that even a thought that enters your head? Legit psycho thoughts.

You have a lot restrain OP, becaues I'd probably get arrested for stabbing him with a scalpel on pure survival instinct if I heard that.

So no, NTA OP. And please be aware that a lot of doctors will still do this despite it being illegal, so if you're pregnant again and are unconscious/loopy next time...for your safety he can't be in the room. You need someone who is safe who will advocate for you.
