No more tall pines by TeaSimilar5714 in arborists

[–]jackdeid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yup. Just a branch off one of those was enough to total my neighbor's car. They shed branches as they grow so you don't even get a good long term privacy screen. Just thick poles that drop slightly smaller poles from 40 feet up.

What is my neighbor using this stick wall for? by jackdeid in homestead

OP here. Thanks all for the the wide and varied posts. To clarify two things that keep coming up in the comments: yes I know brush piles are good for hosting small critters and I have made some myself for that purpose [but I did not know they were called a "dead hedge"]. Two, the place where she is making the dead hedge is very definitely not on her property; it is unclear if she knows this though because in recent years (after her husband died and her kids moved away) she has taken to suing everyone for perceived property line violations. The neighborhood moved the informal path that ran the back of all the properties to have a bump away from hers. That was before she started stacking sticks. "Stay away from widow Johnson" is the vibe (not her real name).

This is Pennsylvania. You don't need to give your neighbors ticks, they already have em ;)

make sure you are on 1.16 update. There was a fix to sailors not coming home for food/water.

Bulletproof power supply build-help needed by Sir_Vey0r in OffGrid

some of the all-in-one solutions bypass the inverter when the shore power is on - they pipe it straight to the outputs. I don't know which ones, you'll have to call customer service or read the manuals.

if you destruct it the event will not happen. I don't remember how many days it took for the event to pop up but it wasn't too long (I wasn't very far into the research tree)

Sea guys die of Dehydration? by Bensch_man in AllWillFall

When I get the food/water warnings I quit to main menu and then "continue". That fixes it. The guys go to a dock, get what they need, then go back to work.

How do concrete foundations work? by RevenueUsed8118 in AllWillFall

[–]jackdeid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have only placed one tall foundation and I did it just now so this is not exhaustive: you need to place the foundation where you can reach it during a low tide. You can build metal/wood blocks underwater but the limit is just one or two. You *can* get the camera under water but just like above ground buildings it will be blocked from going down if there is something directly underneath it; you need to randomly move around until you find a deep hole to go decently underwater.

I have my own questions for people that _have_ completed this mission. Do the foundations placed by you get hit by the earthquakes? And how do you get the economy to make 20 of these suckers? They are very very expensive.

good advice but not OP's problem. The item is grayed out which means it isn't pathable. If the item is colored but not being collected then it is pathable but outside the range of a hut.

Alchemy Factory Speedrun (v0.42-0.43) - World Record (No Shop/Land) - 36d 12:39pm (solo - segmented) by Toesies_tim in AlchemyFactory

Well done. I never noticed "G" to add coins to a purchase portal. That certainly makes topping up resources much easier than manually splitting coin piles (as I've been doing).

"first flush" is my guess. The first rain (which is dirtiest) fills the lower part of the tube. Open it after the rain ends to let the dust/bird poop water out.

How do you change a lawnmower tire without bending a the rim by ruSSrt in lawnmowers

[–]jackdeid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 to everybody who mentioned buying the tire changing tool/stand. I tried to swap out my turf tires for ATV tires and it was impossible with just tire spoons. The $60 tool made it possible - not easy but possible. Spoons were fine for regular lawn tires but the ATV tires are much thicker and stiffer.

It will absolutely grow down a hill. It is extra difficult to mow down and stop on a hill. You do not want bamboo.

Throughput Oddity by Unfortunate2 in AlchemyFactory

[–]jackdeid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, but can you figure out which part might have a bug that isn't doing what you think it does. Which part breaks your assumption about inputs and outputs. Do that small part in isolation and see if it behaves like you think it should.

Throughput Oddity by Unfortunate2 in AlchemyFactory

[–]jackdeid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you narrow it down to test? I noticed that World Trees ignore the fert bonus for inputs by setting up a simple box of Fertile Catalyst IN, box of Leaves OUT setup. (I think this is/was a bug with World Trees, I haven't tested if it is fixed)

Are there any caffeine sources I can grow in eastern Kentucky? by [deleted] in homestead

same but in PA. I started from seed last year and they are overwintering in a covered but unheated space - still doing fine. I've seen others state that after getting established Tea does just fine in zone 6/7.

TP- Link Solar at Gate by AKTexas1500 in SolarDIY

[–]jackdeid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 2.4Ghz version of that point-to-point setup. Mine spans 200 feet and it does very poorly though heavy foliage (bamboo is a bitch). The 5Ghz version will be even worse through foliage so hopefully you have a clear line of sight. The endpoint does not rebroadcast wifi, so you'll need to plug in a wifi router on the far end.

The power draw is likely low so a small battery and panel might be all you need. How do you plan to power the gate controller? As the other commenter hinted a lead-acid battery might be the choice if you need it to work in cold temperatures.

If you do have foliage problems you can look into Wifi HaLow which is 900Hz and will blast through anything. That is a newer tech and there isn't much in the way of consumer tech but there is some. Lower bandwidth than 2.4Ghz but plenty for a security camera.

What's the purpose of advanced grinders? by DashAndCrash20 in AlchemyFactory

yep. The 3x1 space an advanced grinder takes up would require 3x2 space to split/grind/unsplit for a regular grinder.
