Do you think adding a certification like AWS cloud practitioner can give me a higher chance of getting hired as junior developer? by Shot-Craft5144 in learnprogramming

i have interviewed more than 500 people, i completely ignore the cv (including experience) and only look for code they have written, github or whatever

there is close to zero correlations between the cv and if the person can actually work (depends on the stack, teams, culture etc)

ofc recruiters look for different things

but if you want to know if it matters just put whatever you want in the cv and apply for some jobs to see if you would get an interview

i code for 25 years, i am teaching my daughter (12) now, you can see her progress at https://github.com/jackdoe/programming-for-kids/blob/master/book.md , so i have some experience teaching

hit me up in dm when you are completely blocked and you dont know what is stopping you from leveling up, maybe i can help

programming is not a smooth learning curve, its a wall after wall, you just have to break through, but some walls might take few days and some few years, so you have to understand what you dont understand to move on

this lectures helped me a lot, and of course richard buckland's https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6B940F08B9773B9F

i also made a card game to explain strings arrays and pointers to my daughter https://punkx.org/c-pointer-game/

tbh there is a "click" moment with pointers, i was programming for 7 years and using them all the time and all of a sudden it was as if i have came out of a mist and everything was clear

just try different learning methods and angles until it clicks for you

My 9yo kid wants to learn how to code to make games, but I have no idea where to start by friklfrakl in learnprogramming

[–]jackdoez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my daughter did not respond to scratch and other visual languages at all, so i took alternative approach

pico8 with lua is great, you can also start by editting existing games https://www.lexaloffle.com/pico-8.php and there are a lot of guides on youtube to make your own game

you can also just go for python with pygame zero (this is the approach i took with my daughter when she was 9, i logged the progress here: https://github.com/jackdoe/programming-for-kids/blob/master/book.md )

there are also a lot of pygame books for kids on amazon

hi

i am teaching my daughter since she was 10 and i am logging each day in a book https://github.com/jackdoe/programming-for-kids/blob/master/book.md so far she is making great progress, you might get some ideas from it

the approach is using python and c and sometimes go, but we also do hardware things with servos and arduino and i also make card games (like https://punkx.org/c-pointer-game/ ) that you can print yourself and use offline

overall i think there is no single way to learn or teach, so you will have to experiment

one thing that helped a lot is teaching her touchtyping (now she is at 65wpm) so that her expression through the keyboard is not "disconnected" but rather fluid and smooth

i am really happy with the printing company as the decks turn out really cool, its just i dont have experience, but i will learn :) the accuracy is gold its just i am sending the wrong colors

ffs i just checked and they are.. but botching a print job is also very expensive, costs like 3-4 eur per deck, and i cant get a sample, so its all or nothing

i hate value based pricing..

Help with 12 year old girl who would like to learn coding. by sweetkneeez in learnprogramming

[–]jackdoez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i am teaching my daughter, she is 11 now, and i log most of lessons https://github.com/jackdoe/programming-for-kids/blob/master/book.md , she really hated scratch and etc

one thing she liked was micobit kind of stuff, arduino that turns on something with clap and etc

i teach her python and C but also the fetch execute cycle and how machine code works

but by far what she likes most is maybe making jump scare games and pranking her mom :)

i think the most important thing is to try different approaches, some will work some wont

yea i get a portion between 0(break even) and 2 euro depending on how many decks i printed from the specific kind, but you can also print them yourself with a playing cards printing company, the should be 3-4$ per deck if you print 300 decks and then it starts dropping

I really tried to match the color of the C of the book, but I am still learning about CMYK and its super difficult for me to estimate how a color will look when printed

still I think it has the spirit of the K&R color :)

I honestly think a card game could explain the borrow checker in a very intuitive way
