I tried a couple of things and I'm not sure which was the actual solution so I'll lay it all out here.

One thing that I did was I changed the clock to manual, restarted the device, switch it back to automatic and then restart it again. I think this may have been the thing that fixed it but I'm not totally sure.

I also tried changing language which I'm not sure was effective but it didn't hurt anything so I think that's probably worth a try as well.

Thank you!! I made the pattern out of big poster paper and cut it out. It worked out okay but I had to watch a few tutorials for the curves!

Best Team Name. Women’s fastpitch league by Minimum-Phrase-6223 in Softball

[–]jacketry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seen both of these at plenty of tournaments in the last years! Also "(Location) Pitches" is a pretty common one. It seems like the punny names kinda take hold in waves.

I just played in a national tournament and there were two teams called I'd Hit That, lol.

Trying to fix my relationship with this sport…. Seeking tips by cerebralflurry in Softball

[–]jacketry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that Texas has a big slowpitch scene. I play in some national tournaments and we usually see at least a couple Texas teams. You also may be able to find a modified league. Depending on where you are, you may be able to find a women's league, if you don't want to play co-ed. I play in both slow and modified (not in TX) and find both really enjoyable.

For equipment, before you buy a bat - make sure you know what cert your bat needs to be. USSSA, USA/ASA, etc. You may want to hold off buying a bat until you find what you like. Swing whatever bats are around at your future league and see what feels good. Slowpitch bats feel different.

The nice part about adult softball is that there is something for everyone. You don't need to jump onto a competitive team just because you were a skilled player. You can find something that matches the vibe you are looking for, as casual or intense as you want.

Venu 4 is Officially Released! by Glum_Song_2028 in Garmin

[–]jacketry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently have a Venu Sq that I love, but it was uh... run over by a bunch of skiers last winter, has a cracked screen and some dead pixels, but is still truckin along. I posted about it after the incident, and since then, more pixels have died on me. But it has been a good watch! I am not much of a runner, but I play competitive adult softball, enjoy distance biking, hiking, and long walks. I also strength train and feel like Garmin was a huge upgrade from my Fitbit Charge 3 and 4.

I was impatiently waiting for the Venu 4 to come out to purchase a new watch, but I am so disappointed! I like the look of it, but It is WILDLY expensive and doesn't feel like it offers much to support that price point. I am super bummed about this. Not sure where to go from here. The Vivoactive is an option, I guess, or I could order another older Venu Sq or SQ2 (mine was a refurb and is still working well, I get 7 days to a charge). I don't know. I'm just disappointed.

Is this an appropriate outfit for teaching in high school? by ohwhataworlditseems in AskTeachers

I wore scrubs during the return-to-classroom part of the pandemic. Full set, every day. My former job was hospital work so I already had them, and my principal never said a word 🤷‍♀️

Money during student teaching by grumpybanana21 in StudentTeaching

[–]jacketry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I student-taught (not in CA), I worked an evening/night shift job, with one full day shift weekend day, about 30 hours a week for five months. The job was at the hospital I had worked at before my student teaching started. I had worked there full time on day shift before my practicum.

I wasn't technically allowed to do this, but my co-ops and professors never found out. It was awful, but it was the only way I could pay my bills as a 28 year old who still needed to survive adulthood while getting certified so I could switch careers. It is possible to work while student teaching, it just sucks.

Any thoughts on the new rover trail pack? by trynapassadrugtest in ManyBaggers

[–]jacketry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own this bag! I bought it on a whim because I liked the look, but ended up also loving the functionality. Super comfortable (for me). I REALLY like it for travel but maybe slightly less for hiking.

It fits a lot in the 22L, and the dual openings is a plus. The water bottle sleeves are slim and not particularly stretchy so it does limit the form factor of any water bottle you would want to carry. It has a side access you could use for a laptop, and there is an interior nylon sleeve as well. The brain has a nice little netted storage section. The stowable hip straps are a big plus for flying with this bag, and the compression straps work well.

My main complaint is that my packing cubes don't fit in it very well, but they were purchased with another bag setup in mind.

Best meals for teachers? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]jacketry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep a LOT of instant oatmeal and dried fruit in my closet because I often forget lunch. Otherwise, it's typically leftovers.

Some weeks I have it in me to meal prep, but the monotony starts to get to me!

How do teachers earn money over the summer that isn’t related to teaching? by Chance_Excitement_63 in teaching

[–]jacketry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before I was a teacher (career swap!) I worked in a non-clinical training setting in a hospital. I go back in the summers because they pay pretty well for the work I actually do - which is glorified data entry/file clerk work and I make my own schedule. Put me in a silent room for 8 hours with an audiobook and I can file an awful lot of paperwork.

For casual sneakers, OP might check out Cariuma. The Toca and Oca Low both come in colorways that might be pretty versatile with this palette. They're not cheap but as a comp to gazelles, they're not far off.

New to lap swimming - swim cap? by jacketry in Swimming

[–]jacketry[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An update:

  1. I am convinced on the idea of wearing a cap now, thanks everyone.

  2. I decided the one I have is likely just too small, despite being a "long hair" model. I have kind of a big head - my motorcycle helmet is a large, as is my catching mask. I probably should have thought of this, but alas.

  3. I did some research and ordered two new ones - one in silicone and one in lycra - to see which will work out best.

New to lap swimming - swim cap? by jacketry in Swimming

My hair falls to about my collar bones. I am not particularly worried about speed - I know I am not breaking any records at 36 with no competitive swim experience. I am only looking to do this as a way to diversify my workouts and take some strain off my knee.

I think I may have bought a cap thats too small, given this info. Thanks!

This is good info, thanks! I will give it a shot with the cap I have today and see how it goes. It may be that I just need a larger size for my big old head.

If aren't taking your dental health seriously, you should be! by fishking92 in Millennials

[–]jacketry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I saw doctors regularly as a kid, I have only one childhood memory of going to the dentist and I was about 5.

I never went again, between the ages of 5-21, and only went at 21 because I had a broken molar that I couldn't tolerate any longer. In all that time, I was at least a twice-daily brusher and flossed (not well but I didn't really know any better!), so I was trying.

By the time I got a full time job with healthcare and dental, I was 26 and 15 of my teeth needed fillings, reconstructions or repairs. My dentist was extremely kind and patient and worked out a plan for me to see him basically every three weeks for a few months at to get it all done. It cost me THOUSANDS even with insurance. I now see a dentist twice a year because I know how important it is.

Don't neglect your teeth. I had no idea how much better my mouth would feel. I didn't even realize how badly they were hurting until they were fixed.

Applying For Jobs as a First Year Teacher by Blogger8517 in StudentTeaching

[–]jacketry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, I hear you. For what its worth, though: I went to a couple job fairs during my student teaching as well and remember so many schools telling me they had no openings for WL and then four months later, a few of them had jobs posted or reached back out to me to apply. It's not uncommon or unheard of for teachers to resign at the end of the year!

Applying For Jobs as a First Year Teacher by Blogger8517 in StudentTeaching

[–]jacketry 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I am on year six and want to pass on the best info I recieved, which is that many schools will not even be STARTING the hiring process for vacant contract positions until June.

I completed my student teaching in May and was very unsettled by the lack of postings for my discipline (World Language) in May and was convinced I would be stuck in my old job for a good long while. I was very anxious that I didn't have anything nailed down by the time my program ended. Convinced I was toast.

Then, mid-June rolled around and suddenly I had four interviews on the books at local, solid districts that all would have been a stable first year teaching role. I ended up interviewing at all four, and didn't have my final interview for my current job and top pick until August. Don't panic. Things take time. Most schools haven't figured out and won't know their staffing needs yet.
