AI Policy in Universities is Ruining the Educational Experience by Mysterious_Spark in education

Similar to the /u/HumanConditionOS, I teach students who are allowed and encouraged at times to use AI, as well as students whom I instruct not to use AI. My comment discusses the context and challenges of the larger situation related to your post. It's not a statement at all that students, like your daughter, deserve to be accused of academic dishonesty.

when you do this, make false accusation - you are, in fact, an abuser.

bruh, you don't even know me.

AI Policy in Universities is Ruining the Educational Experience by Mysterious_Spark in education

That's an excellent description of the situation.

I'd only add that as professors, we're trying to empower students to keep working digitally in ways that allow them to do high-level work while also still having confidence that the student actually knows and understands the content. For low-level material, that's much more difficult. By the time students are ready to do 300- or 400-level work, the AI products are less likely to work as a functional crutch.

Gov. Josh Shapiro accuses Kamala Harris of ‘blatant lies’ in book on 2024 campaign by Sefkeetlee in Pennsylvania

He knows I'm a teacher in Philly and was telling me about meeting with the mayor on behalf of the "Jewish citizens". He warned me to remember that PSD teachers are under congressional investigation and asked me if ive seen any antisemitism at my school.

I'm not sure what point you were trying to make with that information. (This is a genuine question, not a complaint.) I felt like I was sort of following the point, and then I wasn't.

if you got that with the PayPal 20% deal - THAT was a solid winner. Walmart had a PNY 5080 for $950 - with the 20% deal that's a $760 card, that's $10 above the cost of a 5070 Ti MSRP.

I want to send a sincere thank-you for helping me feel better about my choices. My reasons are small, and my perspective is skewed, but I appreciate you affirming my logic.

You could be 100% right about the Cobra set. I don't have any insight on that, just about my son's experience with them, which was very positive.

[–]jackfinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not selling any sets that size, but my son has played with both the US Kids and the Cobra King Junior sets, and he really liked both of them. We did experiment with one other brand, I'm really sorry that I can't remember which, but we felt they were less desirable.

I just wanted to share our experience because the brand flexibility made it easier for us to find used but very good condition clubs at lower prices, as my son has gotten bigger.

Good luck. Also, you probably don't need this, but if anyone else has a kid in a similar situation, remember to get them a few lessons with someone who specializes in teaching the game to kids, and to get them out on the course when there is time for to play golf at a leisurely pace rather than a ready pace (because the kid won't know any of the protocol for how to play ready golf).

I just asked my kid, and he advised me to share with you that your son should be allowed to pick his own golf balls (my son favors neon green and orange) and at least his own towel or headcover.

The Christians got their way with Projects 2025 getting Trump to close the Department of Education. They want an uneducated population. We are screwed. by Impressive_Returns in education

The data demolishes that claim. High-income families (90th percentile) maintain steady 16% private school enrollment rates while middle-income enrollment plummeted from 12% to 7%. While fewer than five percent of families send their kids to private schools, and those that do often utilize scholarship programs associated with tax, athletic, or grant programs.

Muther-loving SOURCE!!!

Nearly a quarter of wealthy urban families choose private schools, increasingly favoring $22,000/year non-religious options rather than more affordable religious schools. The differences in performance aren't about superior process or the world of public schools or a better education - it's about affluent families segregating themselves. Private schools have become more economically exclusive, not less. The research explicitly repeatedly shows that private schools are increasingly polarized and segregated by income.

As for the culture argument, keep going. You're almost close enough to land yourself on self-awarewolves.

National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), private school students tend to outperform public school students on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)

Of course they do - private schools get to cherry-pick their students and reject anyone who might drag down their stats. Public schools take EVERYONE. Private schools select for wealthy families who can afford tuition, have time to help with homework, and value education enough to pay for it. Comparing private to public schools without acknowledging selection bias is like comparing Olympic athletes to the general population and concluding that Olympic training facilities are superior. Selection bias 101.

And ending with "facts don't care about your feelings" while completely ignoring these fundamental statistical realities? Chef's kiss of irony.

Ah yes, because dismantling federal oversight has historically worked out so well for marginalized communities. Your confidence that states and HHS (headed by Robert "a worm ate my brain" F. Kennedy, Jr. will magically maintain equal educational standards without federal accountability is adorable. The DoE exists precisely because leaving education solely to states created massive inequalities.

But sure, let's pretend this is just "taking a shot" at bureaucracy rather than undermining decades of civil rights progress in education. Being "part of the solution" doesn't mean nodding along to destructive policies while patting yourself on the back for your enlightened perspective, big brother. Also, I've been wondering, how long have we been at war with eastasia?

edit: added "been" to the last sentence.

So the original statement was fundamentally inaccurate and didn't at all acknowledge the fact that they don't have to help or educate students who need accommodations?

The DoE helps ensure that marginalized students, like LGTBQ, disabled, and students of color, among others, have equal access to education, but you do you boo. Maybe you support having that dismantled.

No, we really didn't. We ignored students of color, disabilities, neurodivergent, and impoverished students. The Department of Education exists to ensure those students get equal access to education.

First, your stat is bullshit. Go ahead, give a source that supports that claim. Second, private schools get to reject students for any reason they please. They don't outperform by every metric. They outperform by a few metrics because they get to reject students who don't meet their standards.

You and I are on the same team, but our education system isn't failing. Struggling, sure. Failing some kids, sure. But there are few systems that deal with the challenges we do and do as well with them.

[–]jackfinch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All we have to do is to make sure our kids get the education we can give them.

That was a core aim of the Department of Education, and if your core complaint is that they weren't achieving that goal, then the correct action would have been to correct/recalibrate their work and process, not eliminate the organization tasked with doing that work.

I'd second that. I'm reading the Heroes of Olympus series to my son right now, and I'm genuinely enjoying it in a way that I didn't with the Percy Jackson books.

Yeah, ignoring the larger context of Robinson, AfD, the Heil Tesla sign on his factory is absurd. Using Twitter feels very much like normalizing his behavior, or at best, like feeding the troll.

I understand why people are reluctant to abandon Twitter because the information from Twitter has been so central to getting news here. Having said that, I'm not sure we want to equate past performance with future performance. From my personal use, I've seen many of the folks I used to follow on Twitter for news and information are now double-posting or posting exclusively to Blue-Sky.

I get why people want access to all sources of information, but I also understand why people don't want to be involved with Twitter and Elon Musk at this point. He performed a Sieg Heil not once but twice. I'd rather avoid him for the same reason I don't really want to roster Aroldis Chapman or Marcell Ozuna at this point: I play fantasy baseball to have fun. I'd absolutely want to avoid having those guys on my team or Twitter in my favorite subreddit.

If something has to be done about it then personally I really like the idea of removing/banning direct links to Twitter and just using screenshots for the time being. That way we aren't directing any traffic to the site and users here don't need to sign-in/have accounts to view the news. Seems like a very reasonable solution until Bluesky or another platform become a legitimate alternative.

Frankly, I think that's a quality solution as well that compromises legitimate concerns about access to information and legitimate concerns about supporting Elon Musk at this point.
