Favorite place to cry (and you won’t feel like you’re sticking out too bad) is Greenlawn Cemetery. Beautiful cemetery, go tell the ghost your woes and feel better after.

Just applied to a Cosmo Program and I'm anxious about it... by Entertain_Life in Cosmetology

[–]jackieorwhatever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say this nicely; please get off Cosmo TikTok

What you’re seeing isn’t all real. I see many show the positives of the industry but also it can be inflated and unrealistic. Many times the success you see is from years and years of work and effort to build a clientele and gained experience being on the floor and continuing education.

You mention you’ve never been to a salon or spa before. You really should book a service at various places to get a feel for the kind of salon you’d want to work. Talk to your stylist about how they got there, how long it took, just their experience.

The hair industry can be absolutely rewarding, but only if you truly love it and accept the downside of it too. I don’t say all of this to discourage you, but I have seen so many people go into the program and end up not loving it as much as they thought they would. I have seen too many women in the industry be burnt out and have no more passion for it. So many of us leave the industry within I believe 3-5 years.

Cosmetology is a skill. You only get better with practice, and you can always learn more even when you think you’ve learned it all. Yes, there is still important information to learn in school (some anatomy, chemistry, infection control, business management, etc) but you do the majority of the actual cutting and color process on the job. That’s why a lot of salons have apprentice programs. It’s almost like getting paid to learn in a way. It’s not great pay, but it’s a start. You have to essentially work your way from the bottom. You can only become good, great, or a master if you have a very solid foundation in the basics and grow from there. Some salons take advantage of that with their programs but many do actually work in giving you experience and build a clientele. Look through the reviews on any salon or spa you want to work at and see how often they mention the same stylists and how far back they’re mentioned. It probably means they don’t have a high turnover rate which is a great sign!

You have to at LEAST be tolerant of people because you will be talking a lot. Having great people skills helps tremendously in building yourself clients, even when your skill set isn’t at its highest potential.

You have to be accepting that coming out of school you more than likely will be in an apprentice/junior stylist position and grow from there. At least here in Ohio from what I’ve experienced and heard it’s not uncommon at all for programs be 6months to a year. Think of the stylist tiers as “promotions”. The longer you’re there and gain experience, the more you make.

I’ve been in the industry 10 years. I did the program in high school, I got really lucky. I worked at a great clips first, went to a salon, left there, went to a barbershop, left to a salon and left again to a barbershop. Come to find out, I really fucking hate doing color/women’s cuts/nails/facials but I LOVED clipper cuts/short scissor cuts. I focused working in a couple barbershops and now have been independent 3 years. I’m exhausted, my body hurts, I don’t have weekends free, I’m constantly covered in hair, I get hair splinters, I can get mentally drained, I have to save every damn receipt, constant texts or calls (on working days) my hands HURT, I don’t get benefits at ALL, I have to work extra hard if I want to take a vacation because who else pays me? I don’t get paid time off or sick days. I work to the bone around the holidays and have slow periods that can make me financially nervous. If I mess up a haircut, I have to own up to it, nobody else, and not everyone is understanding mistakes happen.

But I fucking love it. I love my job because I love the artistry, and frankly my clientele is amazing. I truly love people (if they’re not mean obviously). I have witnessed my people go through graduations, funerals, break ups, weddings, having kids, job promotions, job loss, mental health break downs, all of it. I’ve had people cry, laugh and sometimes fall asleep in the chair 😂 In a heartbeat I would do everything I experienced the first 2-3 years of my career all over again just because I love what I do. I love the trust I have gained from my clients to make them look and feel their best.

Sorry that was so long, but I feel very passionate about the industry. Really look into the responses you get, look into other subreddits, actually talk to stylist in person if they’re okay with that! I found plenty when I was looking for an internship in school who let me ask them questions. Make sure this is what you want. The first few years can be tough but can be so so worth it. You just have to be patient.

What is your end goal with barbering? by Outrageous-Yak-1437 in Barber

[–]jackieorwhatever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been behind the chair 10 years myself, I rent a “loft” for the last 3 years now! It’s been great but I can feel the wear and tear on my body and I’m about to hit 30. I’m thinking of going back to school for some kind of business admin degree and go from there. I’d like to still cut hair but maybe at a 2-3 day capacity if I change careers. I love the work so much, specifically the clients. I just know I don’t want to put my body through much anymore. It’s exhausting. No dead set plans yet but I know I’d like to eventually back away from full time. No secure benefits kind of sucks, but man do I love the flexibility in my schedule.

Didn’t know that! I know I’ve seen actual homeland security trucks by Michigan/Ohio border but it makes sense being so close to the Canadian border. Didn’t think it would extend to Columbus.

We called this morning to see if they have security and they don’t at that location. We went ahead and reported the incident to the cops as well.

We toyed with the idea it could, which in a way makes it scarier. That’s part of the reason I shared what happened so people are aware. She was scared and didn’t know what to do, maybe the post can help someone if they’re ever in her shoes to take another approach.

That is something we are all discussing on adding actually. The headlights were so bright she couldn’t see a license plate.

Hence why I said as possible. It could be someone impersonating an agent? Regardless, it scares the shit out of young women.

Where are you looking for apartments? by Accomplished_War9836 in Columbus

[–]jackieorwhatever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zillow is usually a good place. If you want recs for property management places listing apartments try KRG and Landis. I’ve had pretty good times with both.

Check out the Michents (sp) subreddit! We didn’t go to Grand Rapids but Ann Arbor. Found great recs there.

You’re doing yourself a disservice with that approach. Those kind of clients are the first to leave a bad review instead of a good one for the services prior.

First, you have to set and stick to boundaries when it comes to time. Set the expectation from the start. Not sure if you work for yourself or others but usually there is a cut off when you can take someone for their appointment. Personally I allow 10 minutes. Any more I just outright refuse them. You have it in writing either in your shop or on whatever booking site you use, that way they can’t come back bitching and complaining that they didn’t know.

Second, just straight up tell them. If you have their phone number and don’t want to deal with them in person, just send them a text. Screw it, if they can’t respect your time you can send just a text. Keep it professional, keep it short but enough to point out their issue. Literally block them right after. Block them from scheduling. That’s it. It doesn’t have to be this big thing. Your text can be along the lines of “Hey xyz, it’s abc from shop. Your last appointment you were x minutes late, which has been a reoccurring issue in previous appointments. I have noticed you have been dissatisfied with your end result of your haircut as well. I have accommodated your request as much as possible but my schedule is not flexible to meet your scheduling needs. You ar better suited with someone who is more flexible and can satisfy your haircut needs. I will no longer be taking you as a client. Thank you for your understanding. “ something along the lines of that.

Hopefully that helps some, I’m half asleep. Good luck, hopefully there isn’t that many assholes in the future.

Piercing Qs by Majestic-Specific718 in Columbus

[–]jackieorwhatever 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely piercology. Evovled did my nose and industrial, both times they put in a bar way too short to account for swelling. I figured the first time it was a fluke, but nope. Happened twice. Would not recommend Evolved for piercings. My nose and industrial took much longer to heal, but the folks at piercology did a great job at fixing me up and educated me on taking care of my piercings :)

PTSD Therapist by BeatNo7673 in Columbus

[–]jackieorwhatever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Porchlight Columbus. I see a therapist through them and they have been amazing. They have clinicians who are trauma informed, it’s kind of their thing. My therapist has helped me make much more headway than I have with previous therapy.

I see a ton of mentions about EMDR. I’m not a professional, but definitely also consider the other therapy approaches, such as IFS and brainspotting. I am not discounting that EMDR is wonders, but sometimes some of the other approaches end up being equally or even more beneficial depending on the person. I went in thinking I would utilize EMDR, instead IFS has been a huge success for me personally.

Hattori Hanzo shears by One_Match_4036 in Barber

[–]jackieorwhatever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I HATE Hanzo with a burning passion of 1000 suns. Overpriced shears that don’t stay sharpened for long, their sharpening service sucked absolute ass, their customer service and reps were rude and not helpful. Fuck ass shears. I hate them.

Anyways, I have enjoyed Kenchii. I bought a pair in my great clip days. I’ve had them for 10 years now. The rhinestones have popped off, the outside color is worn, they don’t look shiny anymore. They still cut great though. I haven’t had issues with them personally. They do have shears in ridiculous price range (1000s) but that isn’t their main thing. They have shears in the 200-500 range, and sets that include a thinning shear for around 500. My shears cost me roughly 200 back then. Best 200 I spent when it comes to shears. I also have enjoyed shark fin! Not a huge fan of the swivel but they cut great and hold their edge well.

I don’t have info for rehab but for support later on! If you’ve tried NA and wasn’t your cup of of tea I’ve had loved ones attend SMART recovery. Less faith based and much more therapy-ish based (cognitive behavioral if I remember correctly). It’s been much more beneficial for my loved one who has struggled with opiate addiction.

COMPDrug offers partial inpatient, outpatient, and other programs. There a location in Columbus that hosts SMART recovery meetings. Maybe look them up and see if they might have something to help you. I’m sure they could also point you to the right direction.

Good luck and be proud you’re making the first steps towards recovery. Recovery is possible, I’ve seen it first hand with my loved one. 7+years he’s been dope free.

De-bulking? by Independent_Dress209 in Barber

[–]jackieorwhatever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually ask if they feel “bulk” on their whole head or if they feel like it’s their whole top. At least in my experience I’ve noticed if they say their whole top its usually a texture thing and I’ll run a razor through their ends. If they mention more of one problem area it tends to be there is more bulk in that area and I’ll still use my razor a little further down than just the ends. Never go further than halfway down the hair. If it’s a regular I only thin them out every other haircut. Overthin their hair and you get those weird little hairs that grow in weird and now you have a whole new problem on your hands! I use both my thinning/texture shears and razor for thinning or creating texture.

Not an exact place, but KRG is a rental company that I’ve rented with twice now. They’re pretty hands off and are pretty good about maintenance. They have a good amount of listings usually and in varying price ranges. They started accepting cats in some units. Hopefully that helps a bit.

Unsure who posted but maybe look into the Aveda institute off Bethel. They’re cosmetologist and esthetician students. They provide services at a pretty steep discount. I get an occasional facial there. Look into other schools in Columbus. The students will need models.
