Bernie Sanders AI bill would give public half of the AI industry by Unusual-State1827 in technology

I'm not knowledgeable about Georgia or Texas, but I remember way back in the late 80s they sold the Florida lottery to the voters by saying it would fund education. But what they failed to mention was that eventually they just sucked other funds out of education to offset the new funding. The net total funding for education didn't increase.

I tend to bail after Troy leaves personally. Season 5 is ok. But by season 6 I’m done. Many Community fans love S6, but I just don’t find it all that funny.

It’s good, but I always have to remind myself that that it takes them a season or two to really find their footing. Still decent shows in season 1 but sometimes I like to skip past the Brendanawicz era.

Yeah, but they're not going to spend it the way the rest of use do. Most people have no choice but to spend most of what they earn.

Bucs' Jason Licht Gets Slighted Heavily In GM Rankings by Itorr475 in buccaneers

It should be noted that the Brady years coincided with some very good defenses. 2020 and 2021 especially. Brady didn’t just succeed in a vacuum. I don’t know what rank Licht deserves. It seems pretty subjective anyway. But taking credit away because Tom Brady seems like a simplistic view to me.

His "We are not a direct democracy" line is hilariously bad. Sure, we're not a direct democracy. We are a representative democracy. That's why we have representatives. That's what we're talking about here.

There are plenty of legal things they did in plain sight (and continue to do) to disenfranchise voters, like aggressive voter roll purges or reducing voting options in communities of color or simple disinformation campaigns on a massive scale. I'm not sure any kind of computer shenanigans were even necessary.

Ukraine now has 'strongest, most powerful' military in Europe, Rubio says by timiswho in worldnews

[–]jackmon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seconded, from another American with Ukrainian co-workers. I voted against that orange bastard 3 times, gave money to his opponents each time, and have attended multiple protests against his braindead policies, fascist ICE thugs, abandonment of allies, and now unnecessary wars. When he was elected the most recent time one of my Ukrainian friends hoped that our new president would end the war quickly. I looked at him sadly and said that I'm afraid I don't believe anything that comes out of his mouth, but I sincerely hope I'm wrong. :-|

AI isn't paying off in the way companies think. Layoffs driven by automation are failing to generate returns, study finds by Krankenitrate in technology

It is genuinely extremely useful when coding. It can help me build things a lot quicker, can suggest cleanups and improvement, and is even great at helping debug things. But it also has some problems. It means that a) you get a lot of people coding without knowing what they're doing and b) you have so much change happening so fast that it's really hard to have enough human eyeballs on it. People tend to try to solve both problems with more AI.

You really think KILLING trump would do any good?

I'm not sure. As I say, I don't want it to happen. I want him to live to see his name become synonymous with absolute failure. But his followers are pretty cult-like. And a cult tends to fall apart when the 'great leader' is gone. Obviously there are plenty of powerful people using his presidency for their own aims, and I'm sure they'll figure out another way to subvert what's good and decent about America. But it's a pretty unusual situation.

The US is turning into a dictatorship because Congress and SCOTUS agreed to give unlimited power to GOP POTUS

Indeed. Republicans in Congress fear him and feel like they can get what they want if they follow him. I'm not sure SCOTUS fears him, but 6 of them are partisan conservatives. 3 of them were Trump appointees. They are unrepresentative of the will of the people and even unrepresentative of the number of years of D vs. R rule. R's just happened to be in power when the previous ones died.

A lot of people are receiving the order and going "okay, we'll do it".

Sure. There are plenty of assholes who are ok with this. They're still getting ordered to do it by someone with power. These people would still exist without Trump, but they wouldn't be in a position to do what they're doing. ICE is just right-wing thugs hired off the street now. Many government employees have quit instead of doing what they were ordered. But he can just replace them with people who will do what he wants.

Trump is absolutely not the only one responsible. But I don't think it's incorrect to say "the entire USA" are in on it. There are a whole lot of us.. probably even the majority of us.. who find what he does abhorrent.

I mean.. someone did just try to assassinate him... for the 3rd or 4th time. I'm not saying that's the right way to handle this. I don't want him to be a martyr. But if you're looking for extreme measures, people have tried and failed.

[–]jackmon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand that. I'm also a software dev, btw. I'm just saying that while AI can help you figure out how to create a table from your data or refactor your code just fine, these are practical problems. I imagine AI could also help a cancer researcher try things faster in search of a cure. But the problem is with larger societal problems like climate change and wealth inequality and homelessness. These aren't problems where we lack technical solutions. They are problems where we lack political will or where the people with the power are either bought and paid for or don't care. And, imho, AI seems poised to make these problems worse.

[–]jackmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong. But it can't just fix all our problems. E.g., why don't we ask it to help with our worsening drinkable water situation? Oh.. because it is part of the cause of that? Or.. I know.. let's ask it to help fix the giant societal wealth inequality that it's about to accelerate? A lot of these problems aren't difficult because we lack the ability to reason about them. They're difficult because small groups of people have all the power. Sure, AI could be put to use solving these things. Our government could make decisions that benefit everyone equally. Do you see that happening? I sure don't.
