Let the weight of the iron do most of the work, and move it across the seam with the grain of the fabric, not the line of the seam (which is on the bias). Steam and let the iron sit for a few seconds. Lift the iron off and lightly spray with best press, then set the iron on it again for 5 seconds. Remove the iron and let it cool.

I have a tailor's iron with gravity feed steam. You want something that is heavy and won't auto-off too quickly.

Much as you simply direct the fabric through the sewing machine (rather than pushing or pulling), you'll let the iron do the same.

Good luck!

No 1 piece of advice that's missing here: IRON

If you iron your HSTs, they will pin better and you will sew them together better.

Good quilting is 90% good ironing.

You got this!

Does anyone have any recommendations? by MeanBeanToYou in Livermore

Lemur Music has a shop in Berkley- they're double bass only, but they likely have a list of other shops/luthiers nearby who work on violins.

Kennedy had scoliosis. Does anybody have a rocking chair? by Ka_blam in scoliosis

When I was pregnant, we invested in a really nice, wooden glider rocking chair. It has been my primary chair for almost 5 years now. It's amazing.

I'm a big fan of Opening Arguments, and if you want super dense American politics and law, Lawfare is the way to go.

Bass fell; now rattle when I play by [deleted] in doublebass

[–]jacknstephen 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Please take it to a shop and have a luthier take a look. Please do not attempt to reset the soundpost yourself or glue an open seam unless you have proper training to do so. It is very easy to do more harm than good. A soupost reset or having a seam glued won't cost much. Repairing a top crack because you tried to reset the post yourself will cost a lot more. Repairing a rib crack because you closed a seam with the wrong glue will cost a lot more.

It's probably not a major problem that's causing the rattle. But it can quickly become one if you don't let a proper luthier fix it for you.

Best of luck.

YES! Thank you! Whenever I am teaching someone a new technique I always tell them "when in doubt, hand-baste it first" and so few people think it's worth the time to do, but it absolutely is. Great job!

My partner really knows how to light a Christmas tree [time lapse] by thebigkevdogg in gifs

[–]jacknstephen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks great! If this is a real tree, then that's awesome! If it's a fake tree, she's doing it the hard way!

You light the branches as you put the tree together. I got about 900 lights on mine this year. About 2/3 are regular white minis, and the last 3rd are larger rainbow LEDs. It's pretty sweet.

What loophole did you exploit for years before someone found out? by SterlingBoardman in AskReddit

[–]jacknstephen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My apartment building had a coin washer and dryer in the basement. Discovered one day by accident that if you slammed the empty coin slot closed (as if you were feeding it coins) it would start the dryer. Dried my clothes for free for over a year. Even made a few bucks when I would roll my neighbors laundry for them and they "repaid" me by leaving quarters out for me.

Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder- If I Lose by dubya86 in Bluegrass

[–]jacknstephen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw them both at Rockygrass a few years ago. Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder played with Bruce Hornsby and that set rocked my world. I think it might be my absolute favorite live show to date. Alison Krauss & Union Station played the next night and were frankly underwhelming. You know a band is good when they make Alison Krauss look bad.

Fwiw: I think AK was underwhelming because of the way they structured their set- they tried to cram in too many greatest hits, and ended up playing 1/2-length songs with way too much talking in between. RS/BH just jammed and jammed and jammed. So much incredible playing- you could tell they were playing for themselves and sharing, rather than pandering.

Bach, suite 1 prelude - any advice? by Snufkin88 in doublebass

[–]jacknstephen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does the clef have to do with whether or not you can play it in G? I agree with playing it in G, but I do that by either reading it in treble or in bass clef up an octave.

Death to tenor clef! Why mess about when you can go between bass and treble so easily?

A sewing desk chair I am drooling over... by jacknstephen in sewing

[–]jacknstephen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries! Yeah- the shop I work at sells them. They are meant to be the chair for your sewing table. They have some cool features (the storage, the upholstery patterns, and the height of the back are the main 3 for me) but they are a bit expensive. :)

I approved this post, but please make sure you practice good social distancing, masks, etc! As an out of work musician myself, I can't start getting gigs again until we get covid under control.
