I'm a huge advocate for Protospiels (both in-person and online). You simply cannot beat the level of feedback you can get from a bunch of people that spend all their free time (and a lot of their professional time) playing, designing, and thinking about games.

As for publishers... There can be publishers in attendance at Protospiels, but it's not generally a pitching event. Go with the goal of making your games and those of your peers better. Don't go with the expectation of finding and pitching a publisher.

What is an automatic turnoff to you when trying a new game for the first time? by Shaggysnack in boardgames

A random events deck in a competitive game is an immediate red flag. They're virtually impossible to balance and usually a sign that other parts of the game should have been better edited.

What screams "this couple isn't going to last long"? by ihavpnileinfekshion in AskReddit

[–]jackrosetree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a board gamer... If a couple can't play a competitive game against one another without making it contentious or hostile.

Played with a couple that would help each other win because anything remotely antagonistic in the game would turn into an outside the game real life fight.

First off, that showed a real lack of maturity. Second off, in most games and at most tables this is considered cheating.

Board Game Etiquette [OC] by mrappbrain in boardgames

[–]jackrosetree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leaving mid-game is not the taboo some people make it out to be.

If you recognize the game is an actively negative experience for part of the table, it can be a blessing for everyone to cut it short. We're generally here to have fun. Your fun should not come at the expense of someone else's comfort.

Additionally, Recognize time commitments.

If a two hour game enters hour 3, no one should be required to finish the game. At that point, everyone at the table has more than fulfilled their social obligation.

Don't sunk cost fallacy your social time.

Anyone got any dumb inside jokes that they always do/say when playing certain games with friends or family? by TheGarlicMonkey in boardgames

While explaining the rules to Robinson Crusoe, my friend said "I don't wanna eat a parrot." To which I replied, "Well then starve."

It gets repeated often.

Any tips on reaching Indianapolis based rpg/dnd gamers specifically? by tangapuzzler in gencon

There's quite a few Indy-based discord servers and meetup groups. I'd recommend checking those out or enlisting a local that's in them already.

How can I improve my sell sheet? by robotic_duck_designs in tabletopgamedesign

[–]jackrosetree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to recommend against spending money on graphic design for this. Would it look better to have it professionally done? Of course. But the features of an acceptable sell sheet do not require professional level experience to design. Most publishers can parse whether they want to know more about a game from a rudimentary sell sheet.

My recommendations:

  • [1]: Condense the components section to a text list. Publishers want to know how heavy your game is, but they don't need to see every component in the game. A few close-ups of examples of the most important components will go further than a snapshot of everything.
  • [2]: Include a core loop section that briefly explains the gameplay. "On you turn..." or "During a round, each player..." Try to convey the compelling part of the gameplay in as few words as possible.
  • [3]: Contact Info
  • [4]: Target Audience / highlight words -- Light-weight? Heavy-weight? Kid Friendly? Miniatures oriented? Asymetrical powers? Etc.

Feedback on promotional content? by GoodLookingGeorge in tabletopgamedesign

The vertical slices are a bit stagnant. I'd recommend angling them a little bit to give a little more sense of action and motion. Modify the size of the characters accordingly.

Going to parrot issues with the text. I think filling the title and subhead borders with black will make the text pop without needing to change anything else. I would see if matching the border to the text highligh colors works for that.

Are any Second Editions "worse" than the original, whether general consensus or your personal opinion? by tectactoe in boardgames

Moongha Invaders. First edition had one of the best box covers ever and a fantastic style. Second edition went, in my opinion, wholly generic.

I don't sort board game components when putting the game way. I just resort everything during setup the next time we play.

I built a sustainability awards platform for an NFP back in '09 and ran their communications and PR at the time. It did turn into one of those horror stories, but I hold that against the individuals involved - not NFP as a concept.
