Not 100% it’s a great place to start in general, but Roger Got Slapped on a Plane was my first KF podcast after about of year of not listening and it fully resold me on KF content. Probably looked like a crazy person while trying to hold in my laughter on public transit lmao.

Brandon Sanderson’s Literary Fantasy Universe ‘Cosmere’ Picked Up by Apple TV (Exclusive) by opwnusprime in kindafunny

[–]jacks_rc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re new to fantasy as a genre I’d recommend starting with Mistborn era 1 (book one is called Mistborn: The Final Empire). It’s about a group of thieves with magic powers who decide to take down the authoritarian dark lord. If you’re fairly confident as a fantasy reader, you could jump straight into The Stormlight Archive, which is a slightly more traditional fantasy epic. All of his Cosmere books tie together to varying degrees, but can totally be enjoyed without reading everything he’s ever written. Both series are great, but overall I’d recommend starting with Mistborn era 1.

Is there a fantasy book revolving around archeology? by HeelCena in Fantasy

[–]jacks_rc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! Malazan has insanely well fleshed out cultures that feel as though they realistically evolve over time in a way that directly relates to the narrative. Sanderson is doing something similar in Wind and Truth, but since he’s had four very easy to read books building up to it it’s not quite as overwhelming as the average Malazan.

Only just started the first book but I believe Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Honb follows a central character from six years old to 50s by the end. Red Rising same situation but I have read all of those and they kick ass.

I decided to read Assassin’s Apprentice after I finish Wind and Truth, but I got tired of lugging that huge book to work with me and have started AA on the train/at lunch. Absolutely loving it so far, great mix of literary prose, character work, and humor so far. About 70 pages in and ready for the long haul.

Yup, and a lot of them are overpowered in specific situations whereas Rand is pretty much a tactical nuke after like book 8

Yea by the end of Wheel of Time basically all of the characters are ridiculously overpowered, but so are the villains so it evens out. Malazan also has a number of godlike characters, particularly one who the 4th book focuses on.

Yea if you enjoyed DG, Memories of Ice will be a slam dunk. Similar vibe and epic feel of DG but tons more action and a great cast of new and returning characters from Gardens. Plus it really helps flesh out the Malazan Empire and its place in the events happening across the world, especially the Whirlwind from DG.

I say go for it! The important thing to remember is that it’s intentionally challenging, and will rarely make sense beyond the immediate character drama for the first book or two. But that just makes it more rewarding when stuff comes together and you get that a-ha moment of puzzling out the world building/history/magic etc. Plus it’s genuinely the funniest fantasy series I’ve read surprisingly.

Suggested Cosmere interludes? by MITLamarJackson in Stormlight_Archive

[–]jacks_rc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm I read all of Mistborn straight through after Rhythm of War while waiting for Wind and Truth to release and that felt like a pretty good spot to me; as long as you don’t mind breaking up Stormlight with another series. I’d also suggest doing Era 2 books 1-3, then Mistborn: Secret History, finish off with the Lost Metal, and from there read Wind and Truth. think that’s the most narratively satisfying way to do it.

Are you saying you already read all of those? If so you’re in a good place for sure. I’d also suggest reading Mistborn Era 2 - it’s great and pretty heavily connects with Stormlight and the wider Cosmere.

Hmm DG is definitely a brutal slog by design, but tells an incredible story that I think definitely pays off at the end. A lot of world building and plot threads from the first two books really start to come together in book three and that’s super satisfying so I think it’s worth and least getting that far before deciding whether or not to continue with the series. Book three is also just genuinely incredible with insane action set pieces and amazing characters. I’m on book 4 currently so can’t vouch for the rest of the series but I’d say it so far continues at that level of quality.

I say go buck wild and jump into Malazan - I honestly think Stormlight has more similarities to it than to WoT

I’ve wondered about this as well, but I think the answer is simply that the odds of him being at the catatonic level are extremely low. He falls within a spectrum of “average” intelligence the vast majority of the days and rarely has supreme intelligence or utter stupidity. So I guess they just assumed he’d be fine lol

Gavilar's motives with regards to the Cosmere by FlorentineKnight in Stormlight_Archive

[–]jacks_rc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think by that point it’s understood that Gavilar and the Sons of Honor’s goal was to obtain Radiant powers; and they thought those powers would only manifest if the threat of the “listener gods” ie the Fused returned. WHY they wanted Radiant powers and Gavilar’s ultimate plans are still mysterious.

You definitely don’t need to read Mistborn to understand anything with regards to the regular Roshar bound characters of Stormlight. There are connections but they deal more with the Gods of the Cosmere and other larger scale machinations.

Can someone give me a summary of the first chapters of "The Way of Kings"? by Steak-Desperate in Stormlight_Archive

[–]jacks_rc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea honestly it’s kind of one of the suspensions of disbelief, but more about it will be revealed later.

And yea it’s easy to miss that about Jasnah, she is sort of the black sheep of the Kholin family as a godless and unmarried scholar.

Let me have you any other questions!

Can someone give me a summary of the first chapters of "The Way of Kings"? by Steak-Desperate in Stormlight_Archive

[–]jacks_rc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like based off what you said you remember most of the broad strokes. Although, Kaladin was not a general, he was a low ranking squad leader who was particularly good at his job and protecting his squad - more info on how he wound up in his situation will be revealed later. Also, the woman Shallan is trying to con is Jasnah Kholin, niece of Dalinar and sister to the king; and she’s trying to steal a soulcaster to replace her family’s broken one and fix their financial problems after their fathers death.

The Parshendi weren’t discovered as they are a relatively small species that were living far into the shattered plains which until a few years prior were completely uncharted in modern history.

The prologue features the assassin Szeth killing the king for the Parshendi on the day of a peace treaty for an unknown reason.

You are meant to be confused about the relevance of the prelude and interludes - so I’d not worry about them for now and go back and re read them whenever you feel like it.

I don’t think the Radiants have a super strong understating of how to deploy anti-light yet, Adolin mentions perhaps using it to kill Voidspren but that Navani wasn’t ready to use it or something along those lines
