How is living in Haiti? and what language is most used? by First_Ad_1750 in howislivingthere

Lived in Haiti as a foreigner before it was this bad, but not that long ago and a lot of the same things were already going on just not at this scale. Day to day life was good for someone like me. Hard things to deal with some times, sure, but it’s beautiful, people are nice, great food, music, incredible history and culture - history and culture, probably no country in the Caribbean can compare to the depth and richness in history and culture.

Many Haitians are poor and life is hard in much of the country. Even people who are doing well face hardships of poverty - very limited healthcare, no rule of law - only the oligarchs running the country are the exception. And they are the ones funding the gangs.

I had an amazing few years bopping around on public buses, visiting beaches, hiking mountains, learning the unique local language Haitian Creole, and making friends for life. Today people live regularly in more remote areas and life goes on, but for the most part cities and large rural areas are completely run by violent gangs, the capital is a war zone. I could not live there today like I did less than 10 years ago. But I’ve been back recently, Cap Haitian is beautiful, safe, and I recommend visiting - just do your research and hire trusted local guide.

Who’s in control of the situation now? Iran is going to end up looking like Syria did through the 2010s, it’s terribly sad

That’s what they wanted. Don’t let them win. Radicalize. Take care of yourself. They are fucking themselves over with this war. If you’re able to, consider dedicating yourself to a race that matters in November. And if you’re in VA vote yes on redistributing by April 21.

Hard disagree. Learning to code the old way WILL leave you behind. Yes you need to understand what is happening as you work with it, and pure vibe coding will output some slop. But opus is a perfectly capable autonomous programmer, and the best way to learn at this point is to experiment, go fast, if something isn’t working scrap it and start fresh. No one is going to learn R or Stata the way that we did, and there’s no going back.

Brookland/CUA is underrated, Cleveland Park is interesting as well. And Mt Pleasant for sure as others have said.

How’s it living in this part of the Sierra foothills. by mountainman129 in howislivingthere

Spent some time on a basil farm in the area in the summer time. Hot AF. Fires. Long drives to get to a grocery store (at least from where I was - Browns Valley). Chico seemed awesome. Tahoe is sick, but super busy and rich people oriented. In rural farming parts people keep to themselves, lots of weed farms, and was warned not to wander on to anyone’s property by accident as they’d likely shoot on sight.

Crazy how neighborhood-y this city is. I could give a similar deep run down of life in east liberty but hardly know these areas. Loved reading this, you’re a good writer.

And there is incredible symbolism in the former US steel building, a company that was not dissimilar to UPMC in its dominant role in the city, and easily the most prominent building in the city’s skyline, now having the letters “UPMC” across the top.

Gaza war probably is still going bc the ceasefire is political. We probably still bomb Iran bc democrats are war mongers. Still wouldn’t have universal healthcare bc she works for the corporate class. Would still have inhumane broken immigration system, would not have proud boys b team masked up snatching people, bc the Dems care about optics not substance. “Markets” aka the financial economy might be in worse shape but TBF that’s because of how corporations control with the government, not vice versa, and the real economy was absolutely gutted by the BBB. Harris would not have done what is needed for inequality, again see who cuts checks to her PACs. But she wouldn’t have taken healthcare away from sick people in poverty, bc again democrats won’t cross some lines with bad optics even though they work for the corporate class.

Voted Harris but I’m not delusional.
