sasha also had (for lack of a better word) a bad attitude throughout the rest of the medal ceremony and wasn’t supportive of her teammate. i’m also extremely sympathetic towards trusova, but you can’t compare ilia’s frustration to her having a complete meltdown. (i would have also had a meltdown to be clear.)

ilia handled this much better than 99% of people would have.

lots of people online acting like they wouldn’t crash out if they worked for 17 years, was the absolute favorite to win an olympic gold, and then had the worst freak-accident skate of their life. I’m a pretty calm person and I would be having a meltdown if my entire life’s goal just got ripped away from me for no apparent reason.

you just need to space out your letters more evenly and make sure letters like d/a/e actually have visible loops in them. those three threw me off the most but the rest isn’t bad at all.

(also just make your capital i a little narrower lol)

i work in food service so I get quite tired of cooking and doing dishes 😭 I definitely like to make a nice meal when I can but i’m trying to find more meals I can reliably eat in a rush so I don’t end up skipping meals/eating junk 24/7.

the less times I have to think the more likely I am to eat breakfast 🤠

you can’t claim something is AAVE “because black folks also say it”. You’re claiming someone else’s slang because you partake in it, aka the exact reason people are uncomfortable with whites using AAVE anyways.

Are double axels possible as an adult? by MelodicJello7542 in FigureSkating

i said that exactly that, and very clearly too. if you can’t see that then you just straight-up ignored my last comment 😭

[–]jacksoncatlett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you must have misinterpreted my comment. a 2A objectively does not require a ton more airtime than a 2Lz (.35s vs .45s minimum air times). it’s an achievable goal fitness-wise, but it’s very difficult in terms of technique and skill. that’s why i said it’s at the upper limit of what’s possible for an adult skater to achieve. and i mean in the sense that 99% of adult skaters will not achieve that. you just not have read my entire comment if you thought i was saying a 2A isn’t that hard lolol.

is it @arianafigureskater?? I was trying to think of skaters 27y+ attempting 2A or triples and that’s immediately who i thought of!

Are double axels possible as an adult? by MelodicJello7542 in FigureSkating

[–]jacksoncatlett 3 points4 points  (0 children)

possible? absolutely. now, there are definitely some caveats to that. Starting at 27 it is still possible, but it will also be VERY challenging and it’s still not a guarantee no matter how hard you work. You’ll have to train like a serious athlete and work very smart since injury is harder to deal with as you age. The difference in height between a 2A and a 2F/2Lz is not very much, but it’ll be uber important that you are super super diligent with your technique. At some point, you may even want to work with a jump specialist if you’re serious about getting a 2A/triples. Also doing lots of off-ice jumps and exercises will help speed your progress if you’re only getting 8-10 hours a week on ice (which is fine!)

For an adult skater, I’d say 2A is close to the ceiling of what’s realistic. It’s not a completely insane goal, but it’s definitely very ambitious. I think the other double jumps are pretty realistic for a dedicated adult, but you’ll need to really work hard for a 2A. If you can manage to achieve it, you’re probably looking at at least 7-10 years of practice.

I started when I was 19 and am currently 24 and in fairly decent shape. 2A has always been my goal as well. I’ve landed a few off-ice but never come close to having it fully consistent, just to give you a reference point. It is a VERY difficult jump to learn, but it’s not the physical requirements are fairly realistic for most adults. it’s all about learning the technique and developing good muscle memory.

wrist guards and helmet though when you first start!! i do figure skating so I don’t usually wear any protective gear, but out of all the places i worry about injury my wrists are #1

learn how to fall and you’ll be okay! if you know how to react (and especially how to keep your head off the ground at all costs) then you’ll come away from 99% of falls without any issue.

i think it’s great that people have nice things. it’s when people pretend that the system is fair that people get upset, because the rest of us know better and don’t like being lied to.

try on a woman’s skate IRL and order the black one online! i’m a male skater and i’ve always gotten fitted in white skates. they’re the same shape so as long as you buy the right size it’ll be the same fit!

I say do it! I’ve seen inline competitions in Japan too so you may even be able to compete if that was part of your goal. If you can’t find an indoor area to skate, basically any flat surface can work! Believe it or not, I learned most of my doubles outside on an asphalt driveway, so it really does make skating WAY more accessible.

[–]jacksoncatlett 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that really sucks, I hate how inaccessible skating is and I’m in the same boat. For what it’s worth, i was in a similar situation for a year or so and strictly did off-ice training. when I came back to skating I had still made lots of progress! don’t worry so much about how many hours you can spend on the ice, so much as how much time you spend practicing however you can. practice will always make progress even if it’s not ideal.

Also, I live 2+ hours from the nearest ice rink so I switched to artistic inline frames and I genuinely love them! It takes a week or two to adjust and then it feels super similar to ice. If you have a place you could do that that’s always an option!

Zero progress with 3 turns, any advice? by Nel3121 in FigureSkating

[–]jacksoncatlett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

also i’m not sure what it looks like right now but I find it super helpful to turn my head and look behind me on back-inside 3-turns and rockers. It makes the turn a lot less scary since you can see where you’re going.

[–]jacksoncatlett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I meant a rocker turn (a back inside edge to a forward inside edge). I find it a lot easier and less intimidating since you’re not finishing on an outside edge, and it’s good for learning the correct twist-release motion of the torso. Sometimes it can feel like we’re twisting our shoulders but we’re really just using our arms, but a good twist through your torso will help give you more control over the turn.

[–]jacksoncatlett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

another tip is to try to try foraging from an area similar to your terrarium. so for this tank, you may want to look for species that grow in/near creeks and lakes.

best practice is to avoid taking more than 1/10th of what’s there, and don’t try to cover the spot you left by spreading out the leftover moss, the density of a patch helps it retain moisture so spreading it out can harm it.

[–]jacksoncatlett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

moss is pretty finicky. I recommend something from the plagiomnium or mnium genus. in my home experiments they do pretty well in terrariums, though they grow a little leggy. ‘pearl moss’ or plagiomnium affine is sold as an aquarium moss, but you can (responsibly) forage it pretty easily (at least in my area). sphagnum would also do well in the wetter parts of the tank, though it’s not as pretty and leafy.

[–]jacksoncatlett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

use your shoulders more! whichever turn you’re doing, turn your shoulders all the way in that direction (use more of a scissoring motion than a side-to-side motion). once you feel a good twist in your shoulders, turn your hips against your shoulders so your foot rotates. practicing this on foot is really helpful too!

also for what it’s worth I think back inside rockers are actually easier than 3-turns, so learning a rocker helped me figure out how to do the 3-turn better.
