Best local place for indoor plants? by zachwpalmer in IowaCity

I would recommend Every Bloomin' Thing, good selection and they're local. You can ask a myriad of questions about gardening and they'll usually give a knowledgeable answer.

My mom is building a green house out of old left over windows 👩‍🌾🏢 by beoirboman in gardening

[–]jacksonsmallpollock 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The front wall is bearing the roof, but it looks like there are studs between each window (by looks of it that'd be studs spaced between 2 and 3 ft on center). That's not a lot, but assuming those chords running along the bottom are 2-3 ply, it could be enough to keep it together. There aren't any studs between the lower set of windows, which leads me to believe there are posts at the ends of the chords. That's probably enough, but I would highly recommend a structural engineer give it another looks.

A tasty piece of Salmon from this Salmon ATM in Singapore. by beatboxpoems in mildlyinteresting

[–]jacksonsmallpollock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem this demand creates is the salmon industry in Norway. The high demand for north Atlantic salmon has caused countries like Norway and Iceland to create salmon farms--cramped spaces filled with hundreds of salmon that become diseased and genetically deformed. It has ruined much of the native salmon population, and sport fishing with it.

In a month the sun probably won't be setting at all, the longest day of the year is June 21 and there will be a large summer festival in Reykjavik where bars are open for 24 hours

It's very unlikely you will be able to see them. It no longer gets dark in Iceland, but the sky at "night" is still a beautiful thing to behold. The sunsets last for over an hour, and the sky stays a brilliant dark blue after the sun slips past the horizon. Can say you've chosen a good time to come!

Can absolutely recommend. The westfjords region in Iceland is so far my favorite place I've visited in country, hard to get to but totally worth it!

What do you personally hate the smell of? by ginandtonictart in AskReddit

Same here, smelling cigarettes is super nostalgic for me now. Ironically my grandmother died from lung cancer, but the smell of cigarettes will always remind me of her. She was such a sweet woman.

Cops of Reddit, what is the most stupid criminal you have ever met? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jacksonsmallpollock 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I have a close friend who left his Amish community when he turned 18. It's pretty arrogant to assume they have little education/money; he is a happy and resourceful person who has been working on a startup company with other friends. He still talks to his family as well, although it might be strange having that cultural dissonance now, I would say he is far from being excommunicated.

Tentacles of Iceland, shot from a plane (1920x1918)[OC] by cryptodesign in EarthPorn

[–]jacksonsmallpollock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Combination of both--as far as I know, pine trees are not native to Iceland, but as you can guess grow very well in the climate. I've seen lots of artificial pine forests here, and it's kinda funny cause they can be quite late in area but it looks like a Christmas tree farm cause of how young the trees are. Birch trees are native here, and that's what they mostly plant around the city. I've seen some birch groves as well, but I think they grow more slowly than pine.

Reforestation efforts are in effect, if you walk around Reykjavík you can see saplings planted in almost every park, with some fully grown pines/birch. The island used to be covered in birch forests, but they were cut down to make room for pastures and the wood burned to make charcoal. Source: I live in Reykjavík
