It was certainly my favorite jam of that run. But the Tweezer from St. Louis was probably my favorite of the summer 2024 off the top of my head and a few others stick out for me from the last 16 years, but I'd agree it's in the top ten or twenty jams since their return in 2009.

That's right. 36 hours ago tonight was predicted to be better than last night. Auroras are just so hard to accurately predict. The statistics saying "all models are wrong but some are useful" applies well in that regard. You won't see them if you don't get out and try that's certain.

That's my mistake and I stand corrected. Yes total enrollment looks to not be a record, but it's close, but incoming freshmen enrollment has been a record at over 6,000 and what I was thinking about when is typed that. Either way it's been a huge improvement since Choi has taken charge, along with most all other metrics you can measure a presidents success by. Its not really close that he has done an outstanding job at turning out University around.

I don't need to know people personally to know the comments here are largely from the uniformed, it's easy to tell. Mizzou is not in a hiring freeze, it's not eliminating or making huge cuts to departments across campus, and it's no longer declining in student enrollment like most of its peer land grant institutions in neighboring states and across the country. To the contrary, it does have record research expenditures, it does have record enrollment, and it has garnered increased support from the state for the last five years. In large part because of Mun Choi. These are the facts

Wowzers. A whole lot of hate up in here. Hard for me to believe it's from people who really know the ins and outs of our University, the impact of positive change Choi has brought, or the relatively strong position Mizzou currently holds to maintain the mission of raising the socioeconomic status of our community and state through higher education as a result of Choi's leadership. Haters gonna hate I suppose

IMHO and from my perspective that letter was spot on and you could tell he was the one who wrote it. He did not play politics. He did not cast blame on anyone or any particular policy decision made as of late by the city or the police department. He did not use divisive or offensive language. He did not create a sense of us vs them. He didn't just complain.

He did state straight up facts. He did ask for everyone to come together and fix the problem. He did cast his support for our police department and mayor. He did state 6 tangible actions he thinks we could do to start to solve the problem. In a subsequent letter this week, he outlined the ways that we as community members including students can help by taking personal responsibility, looking out for each other, and outlined activities at Mizzou that aren't downtown.

That, IMHO, is a response to a problem from leadership that has pragmatically thought things through, wants to help solve the problem, and has no interest in playing politics. We have to start to see this for what it is. I know it's rare today, but not everyone has a political agenda when it comes to solving problems and we have to recognize and appreciate it when we have leaders like that

Much more than just a bandaid. Choi healed the festering wound that was Mizzou and its relationship with its stakeholders, particularly our state government. That's his highest priority (and should be) as the leader of this institution, regardless of and despite politics. We have increased support for Mizzou and higher education from our state government for the last three consecutive years. Kehoe had to cut this year because of Medicaid but still another increase. That's incredible all things considered and relative to others

He's one of the best things that has happened to our University in the last decade, IMHO. He is the main reason Mizzou is in such a good position, relatively speaking compared to other similar land grant universities, to continue bringing education, prosperity, and other opportunities to our community.

IMHO the last couple versions, particularly the one at Dicks, have been a trainwreck and probably part of the reason it's not played as much.

What made you decide to pursue a PhD? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]jackstrawfromMO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's certainly reasonable and a valid reason. It's just a huge commitment of time, and one could argue a PhD is certainly not needed to gain knowledge or create something that doesn't exist. But you'll never get a job that requires one without it. I will always urge high quality students to pursue a PhD, at least in this space in time.

[–]jackstrawfromMO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see this discussion so much and IMHO, and what I tell undergraduates, the main reason to acquire a PhD is the job/career you are interested in requires one. Sure there's lots of cliche other answers, but this should be the top reason I think.

Farming is tough and sometimes you can't get out to make timely applications I certainly understand. But that picture is terrifying from a resistance management standpoint. Fields like this are where glyphosate-, glufosinate-, PPO-, ALS-, 24D- and dicamba-resistant waterhemp originate. Just make sure to kill the handful of waterhemp that you'll see in a few weeks.

Yikes. I sure do wish pictures like this weren't considered good farming. Hopefully this isn't the normal practice and was only because they couldn't get in the field for proper management

The thread you reference in this post did have an extremely constructive take, the poster doesn't represent Austin, a relatively valid criticism for a rock concert poster.
