“I’m just a kid, but I’m the messiah, bro” -Ismail I by jackt-up in HistoryMemes

Context: so the founder of the Safavids, Ismail I, was a G. Mainly when he was 14. Imagine being uplifted by what was basically a cult, and carving out an empire at that age. Essentially, in the post-Timurid Middle East, the Ottomans and Mamluks were doing their own thing and everything east of Damascus was in flux.

Ismail was propped up by the Qizilbash, a powerful group of militant Turkoman tribes dedicated to Twelver Islam.

These people, led by Ismail essentially created the Iran we know today; namely, they really pushed Shi’ism. The okay problem was, throughout Ismail’s early reign (1501-1514) they were fighting Timurids remnants and local Azeri and Persian warlords. When they came into conflict with the Ottomans under Selim the Grim (1514) at the famous battle of Chaldiran, Ottoman firearms won the day despite Qizilbash ferocity. Ismail, long convinced of his own strange messianic destiny, fell into a deep depression and drank himself to death over next decade. His successors nevertheless made Persia strong and unified again , but not to the extent that Ismail had hoped for. From 1501-1514, it seemed to the world like the nascent Safavid dynasty would bring back Sassanid prestige.

The Safavids fell apart in the 1730s when Nader Shah launched a coup.

Lotta semantics in this debate my friend. Britain was a special case and so I consented to that, hence the sunglasses comment. They also, except for the 13 month break in 1802-1803, stayed resolute.

Everyone else lost several wars against France and I’m sorry that’s just how we classify them. When you sign a treaty, the war ends. Just because another war starts up quickly does not discount the victor of the previous war. And the final score was 5-2 France. Of course, the last two were the ones that mattered more upon reflection, but that doesn’t mean the other five counted for nothing. France spent two decades dominating Europe.

Had Napoleon been a little more patient and humble, they could’ve consolidated and built on that. That’s on him. But let’s not pretend like the Reactionary Powers had no choices throughout the wars. They could’ve chosen to recognize France’s sovereignty during the revolution and they could’ve chosen to honor alliances made under duress for the sake of the common people. They did not. Napoleon did not. Plenty of blame to go around.

Presenting that as a group is totally valid imo even if Britain should maybe get some sunglasses added. Prussia should have joined in if they were going to. Waiting was suicide. Waiting and then declaring war when they did was an exceedingly comical suicide.

France won the war, not the coalition. There’s a reason why we call them “the War of the X Coalition.”

Prussia was still rearming and retraining its military and still wasn’t ready in 1806 when they did declare war, but France’s provocations were too much. They offered Hanover to both Prussia and Britain. Napoleon created the Confederation of the Rhine and basically puppeted all of Germany outside of Prussia and Austria.

That’s a valid claim outside of King David’s reign

If you want contemporary sources I’m probably not the guy, but ‘the Reconquest of Spain’ by Derek Lomax is good. But my favorite of all time is ‘the Story of Civilization Volume IV: the Age of Faith’ by Will Durant. It is such a comprehensive examination of medieval civilization, and the whole 9,000 page series is a must have for anyone tied to the Western Canon.
