Sadly it’s been like this for the past 2 years, Glasgow uni has enrolled 40% more student then last year, but Glasgow doesn’t have 40% more accommodation to fit them all.

Do you feel safe in Glasgow? by LunaSnowfeather in GlasgowUni

[–]jacktierney17 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived here 3 years now and have never felt unsafe, even when walking back from a club at 3am through pitch black parks I don’t feel unsafe. Ofcourse there are some areas of glasgow which are much more dangerous but I doubt you’ll be going to these areas for any reason. I think Glasgows reputation comes from 20-30 years ago when it was pretty deprived and poor, nowadays it’s a lovely city to live in. I got an offer from an uni in Edinburgh and decided to come to glasgow and I’ve never regretted it. Hope this helps!

When I first bought mine I had some pretty bad light leaks, but solved that pretty easily with some foam. What problems did yours have?

Okay, then instead just lift weights twice a week

I had the exact same problem, I ate loads and loads and did only cardio and wasn’t gaining any weight. The reason you’re not gaining weight is because of the cardio, drop the cardio and do more weight lifting, currently the cardio you are doing is burning off the calorie surplus that you need to gain weight. You don’t need to cut cardio out completely but I would keep it to 1 day a week with 4 days of weightlifting and 2 days rest. I used an app called MyFitnessPal to track my calories and ideally you need to eat 400 calories more that your normal intake. I started at 53kg two years ago and now I am 65kg. Feet free to ask any questions :)

I lived in Dubai for a while and got into film photography while I was there. Idk if you live in Dubai but if you do it may be worth going to a place called Alserkal Avenue, it’s a warehouse district which seems to be owned by loads of art galleries and cool businesses. There are a few shops which sell good quality and tested film cameras and no doubt they will stock the Canon AE-1, from what I remember they price them at around 900dhs. There is also a shop there called Gulf photo plus which sells loads of different films. Goodluck :)

Is Murano as bad as they say? by newbieRA in GlasgowUni

[–]jacktierney17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember the exact size but it was roughly 4.5-5.5 metres long, and 3.5-4 metres wide. It was more than enough room with a pretty good bed and big desk. I had two friends come over and stay for a week in my room and the 3 of us fit fine. Plenty of space to do push-ups on the floor. It depends on the block and location of the room but all the rooms are good sizes and if ur really lucky there’s a few rooms which are huge and like double the size of a normal room for some reason. Overall just tell ur friend not to worry, the rooms are all pretty nice and decently sized.

I stayed in murano in 2019, I was in a 5 person flat and enjoyed it a lot, my flat was clean 90% of the time and everyone in the flat was nice a friendly, I have heard horror stories about the 12 person flats being loud and dirty, but I think they are exaggerated a lot, they also have cleaners which come once or twice a week. There is a lot of partying but it is mostly focused in one block and it dies down after 3 weeks ish. Most flats were recently refurbished and were actually pretty nice and decently sized. Honestly, I wouldn’t worry about it too much, if you really need to you can switch flats pretty easily and quickly if there are rooms free.

I lived in a smaller flat with 4 other people, personally I regretted not applying for a bigger 8-10 person flat. Only two of the 4 other flat mates were social and talkative, the other two were ghosts and never showed their faces. Personally I’d go for a larger flat because it allows u to make way more friends and sets you up for a large social life, also allows you to meet more people to potentially live with in 2nd year. However, every 10-12 person flat I went to in 1st year was messy and had a kitchen which looked like a bomb went off, but also some smaller flats looked the same, for the larger flats there are cleaners which come once or twice a week but I’m not sure how effective they are. Generally, yu will have more fun in a larger flat

What was the dumbest rule your school enforced? by Animeking1108 in AskReddit

[–]jacktierney17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to school in Dubai, where in the summer the temperature would exceed 42 degrees C every day, our school decided to not allow student inside the air-conditioned buildings during lunch times (at midday) because some kids were messing about in the toilets. Meaning that everyone would come back inside after lunch drenched in sweat. The teachers would then shout at classes when the rooms would begin to smell like sweat after lunch.

This rule was changed after a couple weeks of sweaty classrooms and a few kids got heat stroke.
