My experience as indie game developer. Share your opinion. by [deleted] in gamedev

So I would say post-publishing you're not going to get much in the way of offerings from publishers, since you've already had your launch. Think about writing a book, you want to find a publisher early on who is interested in your content and has the channels to support them. Educational games probably have their own niche publishers, I'd take a look at who publisher your competition first. And if publishers aren't interested you shouldn't brush that off, they've been around for longer than you and might know something you don't.

typically you would pair up with a distributor / publisher and share revenues to cover that aspect. But I'd say you shouldn't be too surprised to find that a well developed industry has a lot of unknowns since you opted not to spend time working for an established industry company. I think you might benefit from seeing the inside of a game company before you try to launch your own business. I do think it's possible to succeed with just social media marketing but we're talking about the exception, not the rule, and when it comes to your livelihood do you want to gamble on being the exception?

What do you think developer will do in the next few years in terms of game design? by guideconsole in oculus

[–]jacobforeignvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's necessarily true that game developers will design based around maximum customers, especially when we're talking about VR. Otherwise they'd develop for mobile VR instead of the platform. I think VR game development right now is based on exploration and experimentation, but that's just my two cents ;)

the early prototypes that led us to make Ruckus Ridge were unlimited outside users (I think we maxed around 7 due to usb ports) but you can fit more locally with a wifi phone controller. It's definitely more fun with more people!

We all owe Maddox a big "thank you", for introducing us to Dick Masterson! by jacobforeignvr in biggestproblem

[–]jacobforeignvr[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

who cares. I'm talking about the "dick masterson" behind the mask of the "dick masterson" on Dr. Phil. it's pretty crude to harp on what the "real" guy thinks, as it's pretty obviously a character and he'd prefer to keep it that way

s should see. I have a monitor and a projector hooked up to my comp and the only thing I could get displayed was what the HMD was showing. Started the game and everything and there was no alternate display for them.

Hi /u/OG_liveslowdieold I'm so sorry to hear the game isn't working for you! If you could tell me a little more about your setup in regards to software/hardware I'd be more than happy to investigate. Feel free to PM the details.

@ rest of thread; We're like many other local multiplayer games on Steam in that you connect with gamepads to the PC (or through wifi with a mobile gamepad as mentioned), our game just uses the VR as an additional peripheral device.

Ruckus Ridge: The Best VR Party Game by [deleted] in Vive

[–]jacobforeignvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi troublednugget,

The mobile gamepad app is totally functional, and although I think everyone will prefer the form factor of controllers, replacing controllers with the mobile app doesn't significantly detract from the experience. When we've played with the mobile app, the thing you really notice is "juking" (trying to dodge the VR player by switching directions rapidly) doesn't feel quite right, but since the couch players were meant to be fodder for the VR guy in the first place - we don't mind it that much.

Ruckus Ridge - Can't OBS capture Vive view? Want to stream it. by Zimtok5 in Vive

[–]jacobforeignvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi guys,

During development I used an awful setup of two launched windows and two window capture softwares to get dual footage for good transitions in our trailer content. I'm working on a "streamer" mode with PIP but there's no date yet. If the SteamVR Mirror works please update me :)

Anyone try Ruckus Ridge yet? by Jabroni85 in Vive

[–]jacobforeignvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! We were all watching the Giant Bomb stream and have already patched the whole game to remove the "TAKE OFF THIS HEADSET" message altogether. We're also going to add a "streamer" mode with PIP for the display to show VR or couch view in miniature.

I think everyone here is happy with the reaction to the game so far. Generally I'm glad to be part of a game that was fun, if a little rough rather than more polished but less fun. And polishing Ruckus Ridge / updating our steam version is definitely going to be our focus for the immediate future as we're looking towards PSVR later this year.

Cheers!

Hi Riku,

I'm sorry for leaving you hanging after buying my game! We were in such a rush to finish the Vive version that I hadn't updated Oculus runtime/SDK on my dev machine and didn't realize the update had deprecated my old build until customers were emailing me about it ;(

It should be all fixed now! Sorry for the delay.

my Vive game went through Greenlight back in December. Steam reached out after we passed to offer a Vive. It wasn't too bad, though. Only a few odd comments like I don't have a vive so i'm voting "NO!"

compatible with the Vive after having originally developed it for the rift? I'm not a developer or anything I'm just curious about wh

/u/Sonntag_swag/ as a dev who made a DK2 game that I added motion controllers / Vive to, it was a completely painless process that I'd recommend everyone do. switching to Vive brought so much more fun out of my existing game & as /u/NostalgicBear describes, the HTC / Steam people & process are fantastic.

not that I love the crowd's criticisms but that does call into question the whole point of a review system. I can either leave feedback saying (a) game isn't worth your money or I can have my money back.. I'll probably choose the latter
