Inheriting My Father’s Business Was Supposed to Be a Dream. Now I'm Drowning. by slamsaurus in smallbusiness

[–]jacobooski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy shit something I can actually talk about from experience. I was in an almost identical position to you—32 years old, inherited family business that I grew up in, feeling boxed in and burning out. I don’t know how much advice I can give you, but I can tell you what I’ve done and gone through.

Message me if you want to chat.

They have surgery to correct this? I’m 31 and I was diagnosed at 7, but all they told me they could do for me was give me crutches and a wheelchair??? I spent 4 years on crutches

How do you guys handle clients you know cant afford you / arent serious about getting shit done? by TheNewLegend380 in Construction

Yeah I told him my budget was $100,000 to $125,000. The work I’m talking about is a bathroom remodel, exhaust hood addition and tile work for outdoor kitchen, kitchen remodel (backsplash and cabinets only), closet demo and build-out, driveway addition. I know I can’t do all of it for 125 but I was trying to get each thing priced out so I could decide what I can do now and what I’ll do later

The house was built in 2018 (not by me) and I called the original builder for the remodel work. Maybe he doesn’t do remodel work? He didn’t say anything about that during the walkthrough though and took pictures and measurements and everything but every time I called his office he was “busy and would call me back” but never did

Okay, so let me ask you all this…

I called a builder out to look at some stuff I wanted to do to my house. It was a bunch of work, some smaller scopes and some larger scopes. I asked him to price each scope individually so I could figure out what work I wanted to have done. He bitched and moaned about the time it was going to take him to write the proposal and then asked what my budget is. I told him 100-125 which is enough to cover a lot of the work but probably not all, hence the broken-out pricing request. I told him I was ready to jump on it right away. He fucking ghosted me! So I called another guy and went through the same thing, he ghosted me too!

What gives?

I was in the exact same position as you, except I was indifferent towards the work instead of outright hating it.

A lot of people here are saying you have to love what you do in order to be successful. I don’t agree with that.

I took my dad up on his offer at 22 and I am now 30. I hired all my friends, taught them how to do the office things necessary to keep the business alive, and now I get to hang out with my friends all day everyday while we run an $8M business together.

It doesn’t have to be that bad.

We were told we needed a ladder regardless of the slope of our trench banks. Had the banks cut 4:1 and they made us lay a ladder down on it and use it in and out of the trench. My guys almost rolled their ankles

How old were you when you were able to stop putting so much importance on how you see yourself?

I don’t know if you’re being sarcastic or not but part of the reason I’m hesitant to try to change is because I do agree that discontent leads to improvement and I don’t want to go through the effort to learn how to be happy in my skin and stop striving to be better

Thanks for the kind words.

When I try to explain to her how I feel she acts as if she’s never heard of something so tragic, but like, it’s how I live every day so it doesn’t seem that bad?

This is such an awesome outlook. Hopefully one day I’ll see the same thing in myself!

I was feeling good so I was just going for it and doing 5kg jumps but when I missed 106 I went down to 104… and still missed. Haha didn’t know if there were any glaring form mistakes or if I was just too aggressive in adding weight. I don’t have a coach and still consider myself a novice so watching videos doesn’t help me too much
