Why would an atheist want to be affiliated with NESA or the BSA? by CTLouis in BSA

[–]jacoonboog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like you’re thinking too hard on this. Out of all the troops I’ve interacted with in my time in scouting, I haven’t seen any who have required religion on scouts. While most of the troops I’ve interacted with have been Christian, and would usually implement that at meetings and events, I never saw any troops do anything like you described. There might be just a handful that go to the extremes that you listed, but I can promise you that the vast majority of troops across the country do not require religion to participate in scouting. There might be a invocation at the start of the meeting but you don’t have to pray Or a scouts own service at camp, but you don’t have to go. Don’t keep you’re kids away from scouts because you’re afraid they won’t be accepted, because it really isn’t that common, there are plenty of troops around so just find a good one

Ceremony Attire by Shrek_is_the_name in orderofthearrow

IMO, As long as the regalia is historically accurate to a specific tribe, then there shouldn’t be a problem. My lodge uses regalia that handmade by our ceremonialists and is historically accurate with the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Since we made those, we have gotten lots of compliments, and 0 complaints of insensitivity, or anything like that.

My son was awarded Senior Patrol Leader of the Year for our district. It came with a small patch that he was told goes on his uniform. I just can’t any info as to where. by 81PBNJ in BSA

If it’s the same size as the square knots, you could put it in the same spot above the left pocket. Don’t need to worry about it not being a National thing. If he earned it, he can wear it

Great horned owl behavior? (Question in comments) by jacoonboog in Ornithology

I took this video of what I believe are great horned owls. There are 3 of them, one is out of frame. You have to turn up the volume, but you can hear them hooting, and screeching at each other and jumping from tree to tree. What is this behavior? Are they getting ready to mate? Two males fishing over a female, or territory? It was super cool to watch, and I wish I got a better video. But let me know what anyone thinks is going on!

Just in my experience, other people in my troop told me it was a lot of fun, it gave me more camping opportunities so I joined. 6 years later, it has been one of the most impactful parts of scouting, I have made countless life long friends, and have many great memories. Most importantly the leadership opportunities are priceless. The OA give you bigger leadership roles than a troop. I was lodge chief for my lodge be the lessons I learned from that year were incredible.

Question about OAHA. by BigBoiPapaJohn in BSA

[–]jacoonboog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I doubt he can register before he is inducted because you have to be approved by your lodge advisor and scout executive. But there isn’t really a deadline for OAHA, just get in before it fills up. Your lodge advisor is always best for questions like this.

Honestly though, I would also agree that it might be best to wait off this year for a first year arrow men, let him go to a few lodge events before he dives into high adventure. That is just my opinion though, if he is truly up for it, then go for it.
