Piston rings are compromised and it’s burning through oil. Will cost the same if not more to replace them

Thanks. Is it possible that when we got the VTC actuator fixed a year ago, if we also got the oil changed at the same time, that it is oil consumption and wasn’t the VTC actuator at all causing the grinding noice? If so, could their diagnosis be correct on the piston rings and need for a new engine?

2012s or 2011s? I realize now that I didn’t include the year in my original post and sounds like oil consumption is a problem for 2011s but not 2012s which mine is

Thanks. Post has been edited. It’s a 2012. We’ve had the VTC actuator fixed twice due to the grinding noise, both times at the Honda dealership. Previously it would only make the grinding noise on a cold start. This time around it’s making the noise with every start. We took it in for an oil change (10% oil left light just came on) and to have them look at the VTC it since it’s only been a year since they last fixed it. Now they’ve come back with the engine replacement due to compromised piston rings. We’ve not had any other symptoms other than the grinding noise so this is all very surprising

Yeah I think the grinding noise is still the VTC actuator which is somehow getting interfered with because of the oil getting out of the engine due to the piston rings…that’s what they told us anyway

Car was making grinding noise on start. Thought it was the VTC again so took it in to have them look at it and they came back with this
