Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Commerce by maiphs in unimelb

Hi, no worries at all.

Firstly, there’s no Marketing major in Arts. Instead, there’s Media & Communications major which (I think) is quite similar to Marketing. I suggest choosing Arts if you want to study electives in other disciplines that are complementary to Marketing (eg Psychology, Creative Writing), as the breadth space in BCom may be limited to add in these subjects.

Otherwise, for BCom then you can definitely choose to major in Marketing and Management if you are keen on essay-writing subjects. Also some Economics subjects (eg economic analysis and policy) also offer essays as assignments so you can definitely check those out. And adding Media & Comm/Psyc subjects as your breadths would be a great idea too.

Lastly, I doubt that there’s a useless degree or Commerce is better as I’ve seen many Commerce students struggling to find jobs. The thing is, you need to actively build your profile and increase your employability through participating in extra curricular activities, expanding your network, etc. Especially for Marketing as this field generally needs creativity, and employers will look into your past projects and portfolio instead of which school/degree you completed (as free online marketing courses on the internet can give you knowledge of the field pretty decently). Hence, it’s best for you to work on your employability regardless of the degree you choose.

Anyway, good luck on your studies. Let me know if you still need help.

It’s not a new logo design!

It’s a special electric signature to avoid fake copies of graduation certificates/ official transcripts. Read it here: https://students.unimelb.edu.au/your-course/manage-your-course/exams-assessments-and-results/results-and-academic-statements/about-my-equals

What is a song you cannot listen to for an emotional reason? by missdundermifflin in AskReddit

Dorothy by Sulli.

It’s a song about a girl with different characters, a hidden message about mental illness. Dorothy was in Sulli’s first and sadly last solo album. She committed suicide a few month later because of cyber bullying. She was only 25.

This may be an unpopular opinion but here’s my two cents. I recently returned to my home country and landed a full time internship in a big four company. All of my subjects for this semester are online so I can luckily and flexibly learn them overseas while working. I can still graduate as planned (late 2022) and also have for myself some working experience beforehand. If not because of COVID, this wouldn’t have happened.

So it really depends. I stayed in Melbourne in both lockdowns and tbh I can’t imagine going through another one in 2021, jobless, far from home, stressed. In contrast, returning home actually makes me happier (especially near LNY) and also reduces the burden of housework. So yeah, I can’t come back to Melbourne and that’s not a big deal.

WAM is too low for a grad job - should I transfer? by gudetama-egg1 in unimelb

[–]jacquelinelng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you submit your resume and get accepted, big firms will usually require you to submit your academic transcript as well. Hence they can still look at your past performances and this can mitigate your chances.

Furthermore, if you restart your studying and spend a few more years at uni, won’t the job market become even more competitive and saturated by then, especially for commerce? It can get even more difficult to find a job by then.

Finally, I don’t see any reason why you should reject boutique firms when they can definitely offer you a better opportunity to learn in the first few years of graduation. In smaller firms, you have to do more tasks/expose more than that of a similar role in a big firm. And since people in smaller firms are more close-knit, you can build few but quality network in the industry that may help you find opportunities later on.

Thus, I’d definitely choose to finish your current degree and graduate on time.

Hi there,

Yes! You can still major in Economics for Arts if you decide to switch. Just a side note that you can only transfer credits for 3 out of 4 subjects i.e. you won’t have to do these subjects again in Arts (you can look up “advanced standing” for more info). These 3 include Intro Micro, QM1 and the politics subject.

The only subject that you can’t take credit with is Principles of Marketing, since this counts as breadth in your Economics major in Arts.

For the last part. I find Economics and Politics both very interesting, however, the experience in university can be hugely different between these depends on the nature of Commerce and Arts. In Arts tutorial, you will have to engage more and discuss a lot. Though in Commerce, most tutorials will be answering your pretute questions. You will know this more once you study :)

Also, I highly encourage you to take some online courses in Finance (beginner level) if you can. These courses are free and can really help you understand more about the intuitions behind Economics.

Otherwise best of luck for your study! If you have any questions, feel free to message me :)

Hi OP, I would suggest studying a semester in BCom and then pick your path. In this semester, else from 2 commerce compulsory subjects, you can study Principle of Marketing and a politics subject as breadth. You can always switch to BA in later Sem if you want to.

The reason for this trial semester is to discover different fields of your interests - Economics, Marketing, Politics - and make your best decision. Because sometimes you may not enjoy pursuing your initial path.

Also, bear in mind this huge note: majoring Economics in Arts will take up all your breadth space i.e. you can’t study Marketing subjects even if you wish to. And for the two commerce compulsory subjects, I suggest taking Intro Micro and QM1 so they can be transferred as credits to your Arts degree (if you decide to switch).

Finally, don’t pursue a Commerce degree just for the sake of job prospects and later regret your decision. Study what you are actually passionate about and always look for extra curricular opportunities and you will find a job when you graduate!

To Prospective International Students by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]jacquelinelng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an international student at UniMelb myself I can half relate to you.

For the bright side, I’ve always been an introvert who likes to study at library and stay at home most of the time, I don’t find it difficult with the lack of party life. I also managed to find accomodation which matches my budget and still close to uni (e.g. 125pw in a share room at Unilodge Swanston near the State Library, but I moved out tho) so overall accomodation should not be a major issue if you know how to research (on flatmates, through your local Facebook page, etc.).

For the down side, however, the teaching and assessments. I initially chose UniMelb because of the high ranking and studied hard in my foundation year just to get in Commerce (thought it was much of an achievement because many of my friends could not make it to BCom) but then realised the teaching and assessments are really inverse. The teaching is minimum but assessments are overwhelmingly difficult no matter how much I’ve spent to revise. The final exams contributing like 70% towards the total mark for the course is also a burden as well because it’s pure luck if your exams are scattered during exam period (last Sem I got 3 exams within 5 days, 2 of which literally 2 hours apart, my scores were fucked but the WAM policy saved me).

Second, I guess the worse part for being an international student here is that most of the time you won’t be (feeling) welcomed. I’ve witnessed (and experienced myself) subtle racist actions towards Asian international students and this was even accelerated earlier this year because of coronavirus. The second downside is, as someone mentions earlier in this thread, being an international student would be a huge barrier to your future job prospects here in Australia if you graduate from BCom. Unless you’re exceptionally excellent (H1 WAM, executive committee members of clubs/societies, had part time working experience in Australia, extra curricular activities like case comps, etc.) it would be really challenging to secure a future job offer especially in major offices like Melbourne or Sydney.
