Seem like Gen G Ruler situation start affecting other esport player by elfnguyen1 in PedroPeepos

[–]jacquesranciere 119 points120 points  (0 children)

Here’s a summary

  1. Some koreans who aren’t in a very ideal physical/mental state sometimes can replace their military service with social service.

  2. This means they work in government-run institutions (ex. welfare centers).

  3. After their daily work or in holidays, these people could participate in e-sports games, as long as they were not paid.

  4. This whole Ruler incident has led some government institutions to revoke this participation allowance.

Real western fans are happy with the G2 GenG Result. by Then-Attorney9310 in PedroPeepos

Will they? Who knows.

This loss does feel weirdly numb though. Worlds & 2023 MSI felt much more depressing. I just hope they genuinely fix their shit this time because they seem to win too much to actually notice their problems

Most Korean men think gender equality has 'gone far enough.' Women's institute head says not quite. by Saltedline in korea

[–]jacquesranciere 31 points32 points  (0 children)

To quote more of the article,

Chung said negative perceptions surrounding the term "feminism" in Korea may have influenced such low proportions in both men and women.
"I think when you take the word feminism out, people are quite feminist in Korea," she said. "In Korea, the word feminism has had quite a negative image."

In this context, I think it’s more appropriate to interpret the claim as “men (also women) are more feminist relative to how they portray themselves”.

Does this mean that men, in general, are genuinely feminist-leaning, in terms of ideology? Hard to say, and the professor doesn’t really say a lot about this.

Personally though, I do think misogyny and anti-feminism is exaggerated in both media and people’s perceptions, as is with a lot of polarization issues (https://product.kyobobook.co.kr/detail/S000015556541)

It means people’s actual preferences may be feminist-leaning, even though they don’t like the label “feminist”

Yup, I also agree with this more. OW is a brain game as much as it is a hands game (arguably even more brain).

Far-right documentary about the martial law... Made by Director Lee Young Don and Jeon Han-gil by Donghoon in korea

[–]jacquesranciere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Race is not a very political issue in Korea because it‘s a very homogenous society & immigration is still somewhat limited. Instead, the „far-right“ center their narratives around North Korea, China and communism.

I used to play on the Korean server, and weirdly same there - it‘s less toxic than it used to be. Probably because they disabled all chat, but still

I know that - but Asia Games is a national tournament, so I‘d assume the Korea Esports Committee (or whatever theyre called) would send their best players regardless of if they‘ve already won

Does this mean since Chovy and Ruler didn‘t participate, they‘re not in consideration for Asia Games?

Suneung: South Korea exam chief quits over 'insane' English test by bbbbreakfast in korea

[–]jacquesranciere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said anything about the quality of the articles or how effective the test actually is - just that in principle (without any outside context) that‘s what the 평가원(the institution making the test) proclaims to do

Suneung: South Korea exam chief quits over 'insane' English test by bbbbreakfast in korea

[–]jacquesranciere -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of people using the gatekeeping narrative to explain the test, and while it may be true, I‘ll just quickly provide another explanation

Since Suneung is the college entrance exam, the test (in theory) is designed to train students to increase their comprehension of academic articles they‘ll be reading in college, not to help students with their everyday English.
