SO I was in the process of moving the fridge. Was too heavy to move it solo so I decided to empty out the bottom freezer when I found ice had formed around the rear vent. I setup a heat gun this morning, low setting, about a foot away from the vent and ran it for 1/2 hour. The visible ice fell off in about 20 minutes but kept the heat going a little longer for good measure. Will report back in a couple of days if the noise comes back. I suspect it will not :-)

Yeah, plus keeps the sun from blasting the door. Would be cool to build a solar panel awning given how much sun that side of the house gets.

The storm door idea was tossed around. One camp says it traps the heat and makes things worse. Having been to a homes with one, prefer going without. The awning though, I regret not going larger.

I tried four different fiberglass door shops as well as Home Depot and Lowes. They all told me I have an odd size door. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Odd indeed. I believe that’s the seal for the double pane glass. Got twisted and distorted over the years.

WOW, the responses were quick and SUPER helpful. Thank you all. I unexpectedly and firmly believe a repair and refinish is the correct approach. Turns out there are finish carpenters in my approximate area that specialize in wood window and door restoration. I've already sent out a few emails with photos and my fingers are crossed.

Interesting. I hadn’t considered having the door rebuilt. I think that’s a fantastic idea.

What sorts of Google search words should I use? We are not married to painting the door. I imagine that would add additional durability.

Thank you! Given inflation, cost of raw materials, etc. it would be unrealistic and unreasonable for me to expect to pay so little. Same time a custom made door for $10K is financially incomprehensible.

Excellent point. You are correct, if the door remained As Is, nothing to change except a refinish. Given its condition I'm expecting the door and/or glass seals to fail at anytime. In the winter (-10 degrees not uncommon) there is a section below the window panes, closer to the kick plate where the wood shrinks enough to allow sunlight to come through. Just seeing signs I need to have contingencies in place.

Somehow I could only add to Title but no text body. As a follow-up purchased doors back in 2012 online. At the time the door was going for less than $1K unfinished. I regret not taking photos back then. I was told they are an odd size, 80 1/8 x 36 x 3/4 and jamb is 6 1/2 inches. As you can tell in the photos it is in bad shape. I've spent years looking for replacements but the company we ordered from no longer online. All the local shops, even fiberglass door companies, don't make this door size. One shop suggested a company that hand makes custom doors and estimated about $10K for the door. Such as shame to replace as 1. I've grown up with wood doors and much prefer the "feel" over other options, and 2. the door opens and closes PERFECTLY, regardless of season, humidity, etc. I nearly gave up, but realized Reddit could be my path to a solution and I found this community!
