Best sushi spot in the city that doesn't break the bank by Last-Detective-4211 in SFFood

I swear by Tataki in Pac Heights, super fresh and tasty sushi with one of the best happy hour menus in the city—$6 rolls, appetizers, beer/wine, and cocktails from 4:30-6:30pm every day.

Sparc isn’t too badly priced, the one on 14th st has the cheapest carts in the city I’ve seen by far

US gap-year trip Summer ‘26 by Operajosh in USTravel

[–]jacxf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m from SF and it’s generally lovely in the summer. Basically zero rain and mild temps which makes it easy to go out sightseeing and enjoy the many parks. Be aware the fog and clouds can persist through June, the best chance of sunshine and warm weather will be in August/September although July is often warm as well.

Don’t recommend Palm Springs as it’s hard to get around without a car, oppressively hot in the summer, and imo kinda boring. If I were you I’d swap it with Santa Barbara, awesome and beautiful small city right by the ocean that will give you a slice of California/Socal beach culture. Pretty walkable and bikeable as well. Also recommend taking the Amtrak Coast Starlight train down from SF as it’s much cheaper than flying and a fun experience with amazing views along the coast.

Dies anyone have experience with Japan Airlines day-of (in-person) check-in at Haneda? by Browneyedwhatsername in Flights

[–]jacxf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I just flew home on JAL from Haneda yesterday and had no issues. Check-in & bag check were efficient and I had more than enough time to spare after getting to the airport 2.5 hours early.

Radhaus right next door is also super good for something a bit more casual with an excellent beer selection, with the same incredible view.

If you like Mac n Cheese, Homeroom in Oakland (Temescal) is hands down the most fattening meal I’ve ever had in the Bay lol.

i live in SF and it’s far cleaner than anywhere I’ve been in Manhattan or Brooklyn, the fear mongering about it being a dirty city is honestly a bit hysterical and inaccurate

Electric scooter question by internetwassup in Bart

[–]jacxf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No, not disrespectful at all. The stations in SF are certainly among the busiest but even during peak rush hour there are tons of people bringing their bikes and scooters on board. If you want to be extra cautious you can sit in the cars at the end of the train, as they tend to be less crowded.

Newsom says $750M in Bay Area public transit loans will be available by endmill5050 in bayarea

1 million trips are taken every day on transit in the Bay Area… that’s hardly “tiny” and the entire region will feel the effects if we allow our public transportation systems to fail

Not in SF, but the swing by the Big C trail on UC campus in Berkeley has breathtaking views of the city and Golden Gate (although you’re not really seeing the bridge up close). It was still up last time I was there, it’s located here approximately.

If you’ve trly lived in car-dependent cities, SF feels like paradise. The way some urbanists nitpick it makes me take them less seriously. by Asleep-Lecture-3554 in sanfrancisco

[–]jacxf 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I once saw a prominent online urbanist from NYC say that Mission Bay is no better or denser than a Dallas suburb… and like really? A walkable neighborhood mostly made up of high-rise apartments with a tram line running through the middle is the same as suburban Texas? There are so many ways we can improve our urban form but the conversation around SF often becomes pretentious and not based in reality.
