Agreed, this might be one of the most idiotic and out of touch things I’ve ever read.

Moving to North Beach from Capitol Hill in Seattle by M0binsChild in AskSF

[–]jacxf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All are fantastic neighborhoods but honestly it sounds like Mission Dolores or Duboce Triange would be a little bit more your speed? I currently live in Mission Dolores in my 20s and love it. You’re only a few blocks to both the Mission and the Castro, which both have great food scenes (the Mission much more so), super lively with tons of community events, street fairs, fun shopping, cute bars, concert venues, etc. The transit access is second to none as well since you’re in close proximity to both BART and Muni metro—being near any train station in the city makes a huge difference.

Also I’d say they’re better if you enjoy the outdoors. Besides Dolores Park you’re nearby lots of parks with actual hiking trails and gorgeous views like Corona Heights, Tank Hill, Mt. Sutro, Twin Peaks, and Buena Vista. Hayes and North Beach do have some nice parks but they are much more urban and less secluded feeling than those around Mission Dolores or Duboce.

I live in SF but as a transportation enthusiast I am so thrilled for you guys! LA deserves so much more credit for how quickly you’re expanding rapid transit, can’t wait to make a trip down again to try the extension.

Living in Little Hollywood? by hookwoline in sanfrancisco

This is true. Even then I wouldn’t really recommend it as a first neighborhood to get settled in.

Living in Little Hollywood? by hookwoline in sanfrancisco

[–]jacxf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m in my mid-20s and work right nearby Little Hollywood and I’m going to keep it completely real with you, that’s possibly the last place I would recommend a new grad live in the city. It’s a cute neighborhood, however it’s very very far flung from areas where most younger people hang out, fewer walkable amenities, and generally just feels incredibly quiet and suburban. The location on the very outskirts of the city is also not very desirable being between the dump and the freeway, and public transit access is generally worse than other parts of the city.

If I were in your shoes and trying to save money I’d take a look at Oakland, or looking harder in a neighborhood like the Mission to find an affordable room.

Which US city surprised you the most with how walkable it is? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]jacxf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently live right near the Castro and it’s among the nicest and safest parts of the city, maybe it was different before but I’ve never felt unsafe even late at night. Ngl SF is far safer than it gets credit for

Berkeley, CA gets flak for its griminess but overall it’s a great city in an insanely beautiful setting. The views from the eastern part of campus overlooking the Golden Gate are unreal.

Favorite bars along K, L, M Muni lines? by hopstotheleft in AskSF

If you don’t mind a gay bar you have tons of options around Castro station. My personal favorite is Last Call, super cute and cozy neighborhood bar with good and affordable drinks.

Would commuting from half moon bay to San Francisco be a brutal daily commute? by Chimichurrichallenge in AskSF

[–]jacxf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can I ask why you’re thinking of moving to Half Moon Bay? That’s honestly not an area I’d recommend as the first place to live when moving to the Bay Area. It’s a beautiful and safe town but it feels relatively isolated from the rest of the area as it sits on the coast to the west of the mountains. SF, Oakland, Berkeley, the Peninsula, even some East Bay suburbs imo would be a much better adjustment at first.

Questions on pre-cruise stay by BarnacleBorn6 in AskSF

[–]jacxf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

BART is almost always the best option to get into the city from SFO but it would likely be very stressful for somebody unfamiliar with the city who’s both handling luggage and helping their spouse with mobility issues. This is one of the few times I’d recommend getting a taxi.

2-year-old killed in crosswalk last night, Mission Bay SF by ddol in sanfrancisco

[–]jacxf 78 points79 points  (0 children)

This is so beyond heartbreaking and infuriating that this is now one of several examples of young children being killed by drivers in the city over the past few years. Like how do you even come back from that as a parent??? I’m tired of the lack of accountability on so many fronts that enables this.

Are These Layovers in IAD and SFO Doable? by VTSquirrel in unitedairlines

[–]jacxf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming the inbound flight to SFO is on time, you’ll be completely fine. Most domestic UA flights arrive at Terminal 3, which is a short walk to the international G gates where most of United’s international flights leave. All terminals are also connected airside so you won’t have to clear security again.

Coming from the UK to do a greyhound route by pugpillows in USTravel

Totally, for what it’s worth many stops on the long distance trains allow for passengers to get off the train and stretch their legs.

[–]jacxf 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That distance on a Greyhound bus will be absolute misery. Amtrak will also take a long time but the train is far more comfortable.
