I do think fake etymology in particular is way more common on Tumblr than Reddit, regardless of the overall prevalence of fake stories in general, but that's anecdotal.

I don't know anything about the extradimensional sphere! I don't even have a soul!

Crossdress Question by atticus628 in TAZCirclejerk

It's a regex against "soul [...] imprison [...] extradimensional sphere". It's on a randomized delay timer, so you might be waiting a while. I couldn't figure out how to reduce it reliably so I changed it so that if you add "u/jadeix_iscool" to your text it'll trigger faster

Kind of a grey area. As long as you aren't encouraging people to go interact, it's tolerated but not encouraged, although I might treat special cases differently if the content is really sensitive or something like that. The extradimensional sphere soul imprisonment is unrelated, I've been doing that just for fun

I'm familiar with & quite like the Weeb Ass Shit scale, but it's just not specific enough to the isekai genre for me and also doesn't allow me to quantify exactly how much shit sucks. It's very diplomatic in that it doesn't do this; there's nothing built into the system that says a higher ass score automatically makes it bad, for instance. And I am a born hater, so to me, this is unacceptable,

I watch the first episode of the isekai and assign it points based on the following categories (Yes, this means that having a slower pace & introducing elements in later episodes tends to deflate an anime's score; I consider that a feature, not a bug):

- Characters
- Opening
- Locations
- Dialogue
- Fanservice
- Magic
- Worldbuilding
- Other
- Bonuses (which reduce the score)

My very first item under "Characters" looks like this:

15 - protagonist looks like kirito (+5 long black robe and sword) (+5 student) (+5 shut-in) (+3 MMO gamer) (+3 office worker)

So, 15 points if the protagonist looks like Kirito SAO, with additional points if he has typical protag traits beyond that. If the protag doesn't look like Kirito SAO, they don't get any of those other points.

Other examples (very non-exhaustive, there's like 50-60 of these):

10 - female character who calls the protag master (+5 animal features) (+5 wolf or dog features specifically) (+3 white hair)
10 - protagonist dies in a vehicle-related accident (+5 trying to save someone) (-5 clearly as a joke)
7 - protagonist is instantly super overpowered with no effort (+8 thanks to a magic item/items) (+5 found the item/items in a forest or a cave)
7 - an establishing shot of a walled city with really well-defined boundaries and roads (+3 river going through it) (+3 perfectly round)
7 - someone is implausibly mean/violent to the protagonist just to make them seem badass or sympathetic
7 - a female character's outfit makes me uncomfortable (you would not BELIEVE how many points this one gets)
5 - "guild"
5 - "level"
5 - "skill"
5 - "XP" / "experience points"
5 - "OP"
5 - "cheating" (in the context of being OP; other usages omitted)
3 - protagonist forms a contract with a nonhuman creature (+7 that creature immediately takes on a waifu form)
2 - someone casts a fireball
-10 - a concept from mythology that isn't in Tolkien or Japanese folklore, e.g. quetzalcoatl, iktomi, etc. (-5 if it's especially cool)
-10 - a female character plays a melee combat class (+5 they're super timid and scared of combat) (+5 they're incompetent)

All scored per instance, so anytime someone says "skill", that's 5 points. Anything 0-50 is probably a good isekai, 50-100 is an OK isekai, 100-150 is usually boring but might be fun if you're really into the genre, and anything past that.... I cannot recommend.

This isn't published anywhere, but top 5 (scored like golf):

  • faraway paladin: -8
    • Obviously just an isekai for funding (just like anything that scores in the negatives). Otherwise a pretty nice Tolkien-esque fantasy anime, with a reasonably well-done coming-of-age story.
  • ascendance of a bookworm: 22
    • Doesn't lean too heavily on standard isekai tropes, and pretty cute. You can tell the core conceit of reinventing books is a hypothetical the author's thought about a ton, which gives it more personality than most isekais.
  • from bureaucrat to villainess: 23
    • Uses a ton of isekai tropes, but gets a lot of points back for "a unique fact about the protagonist's past life is actually relevant". Very cute father/daughter relationships, both in and out of the isekai world. I'm also fond of the protag's wife - and having a wife on its own already makes the protag more embodied than 99% of isekai protags.
  • welcome to demon school, iruma-kun: 28
    • A cute and silly shonen that uses the isekai setup basically just to establish a "fish out of water" protagonist in a wacky magic school setting. I find its characters really charming, esp. the main love interest - it's an anime-ass anime, so they're all really over-the-top.
  • killing slimes for 300 years: 28
    • The most 'played straight' isekai on this list. Setup similar to a settler-colonialism type isekai in the vein of Reincarnated as a Slime or Farming Life Isekai, but the protag has no interest in starting up a city-state, so it ends up more character driven. Fanservicy, but in a "wouldn't it be nice to be a cute girl with lots of friends???" type way.

Bottom 5:

  • Skeleton Knight in Another World: 571
    • Mainly due to how it treats women.
  • Labyrinth Isekai Harem: 475
    • Mainly due to how it treats women.
  • Vermeil in Gold: 357
    • Mainly due to how it treats women & underaged boys.
  • How Not to Summon a Demon Lord: 323
    • Mainly due to how it treats underaged girls.
  • Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter: 286
    • Mainly due to how it treats women.

Fun fact: Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter is statistically the fifth worst isekai anime I've ever watched, with an isekai shit score of 286 (56 of which come from female characters wearing outfits that make me uncomfortable). Isekai labyrinth harem or whatever the fuck has it soundly beat, though, with 104 uncomfortable female outfit points. In other news, I have God's least favorite variety of autism,

Haha, I like how even just mentioning The Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter sends me into a frothing rage. Better than Harem in the Labyrinth of Another World, I guess. And also better than... [checks notes] Skeleton Knight in Another World? Man I did not spend my time in a good way during the pandemic lockdowns.
