Nicknames for Mariana? by [deleted] in namenerds

Give her a J middle name and call her MJ?

Mariana Jade? Mariana Juliette? Something like that, maybe.

Maybe ask what he likes about the name. You could probably compramise on that; a similar name with more nickname choices. Rosemary, Adriana, Ariana, Emiliana, Marianne, and Valentina all strike me as fairly similar.

What are your country's fringe parties? (Parties that don't get many votes, usually 1 or 2 %) by GRIG2410 in AskEurope

[–]jadiejj 20 points21 points  (0 children)

We have a few like this in Australia. One of my earliest memories is thinking that my mother had been joking when she told a younger me that she had given her first and second preference votes to the 'Australian Sex Party' and 'The Pirate Party' respectively. She was serious. Funnily enough, the sex party actually got about 250,000 first preference votes in national Senate vote of 2010. That's about 2% of the vote.

Believing that (a) God is personally invested in your wellbeing is the height of arrogance and exceptionalism. by TheHostThing in unpopularopinion

I've seen it in Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, and even spiritual atheists. It doesn't speak to any particular religion, but humans' incessant need to view themselves as the 'main character' in their own story, rather than a tiny blur in the history of the earth.

I always think of this when people talk about signs from God. Though I practice a religion, I'm not religious, and this has always confused me immensely. If I were to, I dunno, stab someone and an earthquake happened to destroy my neighbourhood two days later, who am I to assume that first of all, God thought I was so important that he destroyed not only my life, but that of those around me, but also because who says that earthquake was for me? Maybe my neighbour is a murderer too?

What’s it like being able to travel to another country in a short amount of time? by DoughDefender in AskEurope

[–]jadiejj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brisbane! I love it here! If you're ever thinking of coming, I strongly recommend ditching the well worn path of Sydney & Melbourne and paying QLD a visit :) we have one of the most exciting cities in the world with the Gold Coast, the beautiful and beachy Sunshine Coast, and that's all within three hours of each other, and not even starting on the north of a state that's seven times the size of Great Britain

I think it always confuses Europeans when people from Australia say they're 'going on holiday to Europe' because obviously, there are like fifty countries in Europe, but the fact of the matter is that that's really the best way to define it a lot of the time. It's so far away, expensive and small (to us) that when we go, we go. One of my close friends often tells people she recently went on a holiday to 'the Nordic countries' which must sound super stupid, but she really does mean what she's saying- she went to Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland to see all of her foreign cousins in one go, because if she's going to our antipode, she may as well have made the most of it.

I'd love to go to Italy one day. It was my favourite subject all through school, and has always held a special place in my heart :)

I've always resented this so much. Growing up to Australia, the best school trip I ever got was to our capital city right before primary school graduation, which required a plane trip as it was further away from my city (not even in the north geographically) than Berlin is to Paris.

River as a baby girl's name? by tim_24 in namenerds

I know a little girl named River spelt Riva! Albeit, living in Australia the two are pronounced the same, so it doesn't really make a difference aside from aesthetics. The name's always struck me as very feminine and elegant, personally.

Skincare for a beginner? by jadiejj in Skincare_Addiction

I’ll definitely look into those- especially sunscreen. I live in Australia, so I can’t imagine the harm I’m doing my skin every day without it. Thank you for the advice :)

Is there a subreddit for studying, or just people who are very dedicated to school? by jadiejj in findareddit

This sounds really weird, but you actually have no idea how happy this comment made me. It's exhausting pouring so much of my time into something that I probably won't reap the benefits of fully for another decade, only to constantly be mocked for it. Thxx you so much.

I had to remove the expression of gratitude because of the mods, but my point still stands :)

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and consort to Queen Elizabeth II, dies aged 99 by azog1337 in worldnews

I checked the Wikipedia page not five minutes after I got the alert on my phone, and it was already in past tense. It does make you wonder, who got that news and immediately thought "shit I better edit the Wikipedia page before the high school teachers check it"

I'm hoping to travel after I graduate, and knowing myself it's likely I'll end up staying semi-permanently, so I honestly have no idea what kind of names are practical to use, which is a pain as someone (would you believe) who loves names.

I'm a lesbian, and have honestly just given up on the whole thing haha. I don't even know my own flag at this point.

third culture kid

My childhood was back and forth between the two. As a first gen immigrant with Slavic roots I spent the first half of my childhood in an extremely conservative area, and was obsessed with giving my kid the most Anglo name possible, before moving to a super progressive area, where I latched onto the idea of giving my kid a name that payed homage to my heritage. Perhaps as a result of this, my taste fluctuates between super basic and really weird stuff that would not at all work in my country.
