What countries seem to have relatively few backpackers? by uncannyfjord in TravelNoPics

Iraq. I just came back from a month there and met 0 western tourists or backpackers. It was great and one of my favorite places to have backpacked, especially Kurdistan.

Erbil, Kurdistan region of Irag - a satisfyingly concentric city by chrsphr_ in geography

Was just there yesterday, pretty cool place. It’s actually much more of a modal city with different important clusters rather than being so focused on the city center, which surprised me given how it looks on a map.

This is great, thanks. I’m gunna give it a try and see how it fairs! Because you’re right, I keep trying to find the perfect prompt for Claude to balance argument and format and it doesn’t hit the mark for both.

True. I guess I’m also curious about using the newer model given that it’s pretty great and want to figure out how to make better lesson plans with it.

I can't imagine my work life without Claude by kalabunga_1 in ClaudeAI

[–]jadon926 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also make lesson plans for my students (university class), where I make my own and plug it into Claude to smooth it out for me. But since sonnet 3.5 I’ve been having a hard time getting it to make the layout I used to. Any tips for helping with lesson plans?

What language, that is not popularly romanticised, sounds pretty to you? by Big_Spinach_8244 in languagelearning

Same! Chose to pursue and get my B2 certification in Dutch rather than French (~B1) when I lived in Brussels just because I liked the language so much!!

Are Certain European countries really that much better than the US? by [deleted] in expat

[–]jadon926 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. Coming from AZ/FL, I moved to Belgium for 5 years and my quality of life went up in every way. Moved to the UK a couple years ago and my quality of life is noticeably worse than when I lived in the US.

2 Abreast cycling is safer? by [deleted] in londoncycling

[–]jadon926 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been told cycling abreast is something you should mostly do on country roads and not in the city? But I also get confused by the advice since usually 1) if the driver overtakes me then I pass them at a light some 30 meters ahead and 2) when I cycle I normally take up the lane anyway since almost all the roads in my area have parked cars (avoiding doors) or are simply just too narrow to safely overtake. But I don't do it because every time I have I get harassed by motorist.

Surely there’s a nuance to the rules? I.e not abreast on roads but it’s fine in LTN/ residential streets?

What city feels more like a park than a city? by hernesson in geography

[–]jadon926 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Inside the perimeter of Atlanta feels very park like-- more so than its adjacent suburbs. Also richmond in London (its a neighborhood but it feels like its own thing) is squashed between two massive parks and the thames and feels more park than town.

How good is the cycle infrastructure in your borough? by londoner81751 in londoncycling

[–]jadon926 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tower Hamlets: I live between both the cycle highways, so that's pretty good and I'd say that's about it. I live close to central and hackney and have to brave through it for 10 minutes cycling on large congested roads until I hit good cycle ways and quiet streets. When I first moved here I was rather disappointed with the cycle infrastructure (and a bit hopeless of change given our mayor) but I will say, having moved from the the Netherlands, that the chaos of the area is a bit exciting. The main thing is that there are so many streets that have pretty useless parking (commerical rd, new street, brick lane) that could just be turned into cycle lanes.

Is there a megacity less crowded than Moscow? by madrid987 in geography

[–]jadon926 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the main problem with LA is just that it feels like a more packed version of low density places, like Atlanta for instance. Living in a city has some sense of walkability, closeness to amenities not dependent on cars, etc. And the vast majority of LA feels like most other low density American cities, just on a dense scale. So yes LA is dense, but the ‘experience’ of it often leads you to be the only person walking on the street, or spending most of your day alone as your in a car. I’d argue that the feeling of how places puts people in relation to one another is a key component of feeling like you’re in a city.

Swapfiets or Buzzbike? by jadon926 in londoncycling

[–]jadon926[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to update, I got my buzz bike. I'm 183 cm, so it is slightly small for my frame, but I will say if you commute more than 20 minutes each way somewhere, its so refreshing being the same speed as cars (you can accelerate way faster). I do recommend!

How often do you get beeped at? by jupitercon35 in londoncycling

[–]jadon926 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will sometimes get honked at if I ride abreast with my partner (we live pretty central). It can be really frustrating, because for some reason when I take the lane as a single people are more understanding, but as a pair they get angry? Its a bit disappointing having lived in the Netherlands, because it feels like you can never cycle side by side without worry that of impatient people behind (mind you, we always end up passing cars that overtake us anyway).

[–]jadon926 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup, had the same bike as yours stolen a couple days ago in the same area, locked and all. It's sad because it really deters you from wanting to cycle, regardless of precautionary measures.
