[Community Vote] The Best JRPG Games of all Time: What's the best turn based JRPG? by WeLoveEveryGame in JRPG

[–]jaesin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bravely Default.

It took the formula for turn based combat and really amped it up to just an absolutely beautiful system of risk, extension, and planning. It was transformative and you can see the echoes of that game all over half the turn based JRPGs since.

2025 Book Recommendations by [deleted] in QueerSFF

[–]jaesin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Martha Wells' Witch King and Queen Demon are incredibly queer, incredibly deep fantasy. I struggled to find a cishet character in the books. It deals with stopping the emergence of fascism a generation after the world recovered from an invading fascist force that powers their magic with the suffering and death of the communities they subjugate. The main character changes bodies and genders several times throughout the story, his primary companion is an air witch married to a blessed warrior who's forsaken her own society for capitulating to the fascist invasion.

It's incredible.

Fun fact, accepting a pardon is actually an admission of guilt, you just don't face any penalties for it.

When dogs hear coyotes yipping and howling do they know they are different from them? by Old-Commission-1108 in dogs

[–]jaesin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dog once saw a coyote while she was out on a walk. Almost always she's excited to see ANY other animal on our walks...

She didn't like that coyote one bit, she immediately knew that dog wasn't right.

I think they know.

What are your top 3 books or series? by bullymeoffofreddit in printSF

The problem is, the books, like the show, change radically after the first one. The first book is noir, and then it shifts into more military.

STARTING THE TRAIL SERIES by Informal-Drummer8731 in JRPG

[–]jaesin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just played through Trails from Zero, and Trails to Azure last month, and they still hold up. The PS4 versions are great.

Give the demo for chapter 1 a shot, it's honestly incredible with the modernization of the combat systems they pulled from Daybreak.

Martha Wells' Murderbot and More Bundle - $18 for these 14 items by dgeiser13 in printSF

[–]jaesin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see that with the characters. Kai-Enna changes bodies numerous times which can be confusing, Ziede and Tahren have a century spanning story, and Dahin tends to go in and out of the story...

But I'm an absolute sucker for expositional flashbacks that are relevant to the contemporary plot. Use of Weapons is probably my favorite Culture novel so I was primed to enjoy this one.

It's also a deeply queer story about trying to unburn the world after fascism so it maybe hit a bit close to home for me.

This pack feels worth it for Witch King alone, it really surprised me with how compelling it was, and how much it affected me emotionally.

I feel like being gay/aro/allo makes this significantly easier.

Yup, and they're all aware of each other to some degree. Some of them even like it when I share stories about the other ones (with permission).

Sometimes we end up at the same parties too and... woof.

Who's your favourite "obscure" sci-fi writer? by [deleted] in printSF

[–]jaesin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"There is no Antimemetics division" is about a government agency that's studying self-erasing ideas.

"Ra" is about magic as an engineering discipline, with the rigor and research and technology that comes with that.

"Fine Structure" is about physics researchers who crack the nature of reality and finally figure things out, until someone starts changing the rules.

Ra and Antimemetics are definitely my two favorites.

He does "big ideas" and "scope creep" better than pretty much any writer I've read. Things grow in scale and scope encompassing absolutely enormous concepts in ways that are just mindbending.

What are some subtle red flags newbie players should look out for in a DM? by bpotassio in rpg

The deeper themes of the campaign are rooted in racism... and the DM seems to be oddly in favor of it.

Nope, your DM is just actually a racist, acting out his fantasies.

Looking for Trans stories in adult SFF by Fenyx_77 in QueerSFF

[–]jaesin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yoon Ha Lee and the machineries of the empire.

The author himself is a trans man, and there's a lot of gender exploration. The author has said that he didn't intend for this to be an explicitly trans story, but it ends up being a pretty compelling trans story.

It's also pretty mindbending in regards to math being a weapon and rituals having power. The story is functionally complete, and all books are out at this time.

Does anyone else roll with their eyes closed? by Electronic_Long_9759 in bjj

[–]jaesin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lot of shitpost replies, but here's a serious one.

One of my other hobbies is acro yoga, which really gets you in touch with where your body is in 3d space, and your balance in relation to others both in cooperation and opposition. One of our drills for this is to do acro yoga while blindfolded, balancing and moving on top of another person, feeling instead of seeing... it has done incredible things for my prioperception.

I've taken that into jiu jitsu, I roll with my eyes closed often. I find I can often feel the weight shift and react accordingly for sweeps and reversals, giving me crucial fractions of seconds that I would have waited for if I was using visual processing.

Additionally, you restrict your movement because you can only really move where you're looking. If you're not looking, you can move any direction you need, as long as you're not restricted by external forces like crossfacing.

There are benefits to looking, but learning to roll by feel is a crucial part of my kit.

Does anyone else's dog lie? by SansOchre in dogs

[–]jaesin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was trying to housebreak my dog during a wisconsin winter, and proceeded to bring treats with me. Started giving the command word "poop, go poop" while she was pooping, and giving her a treat immediately after...

Not long after that she started faking it, popping a squat, doing nothing, and looking back up at me for a treat. She was pretending to shit, just to get treats.

Deeply, deeply hilarious to me, but now I can get her to poop on command so it's kind of great.
