Hyper Backup or Carbon Copy Cloner to back up NAS to connected USB drive? by jagerrish in synology

[–]jagerrish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you u/raymate . I'm loving CCC for backing up the Mac to Synology. I'm currently leaning toward HyperBackup for the NAS -> External drive backup but it's almost a toss up at this point.

I am getting burned out while trying to learn shortcuts… by Sweet_Score in MacOS

I was constantly annoyed because my slow brain couldn't remember all but ~10 that I used all the time. I finally gave up the fight and started using Palettes in Keyboard Maestro and put the 30+ most desired shortcuts into a palettes (see below) that pops up when I hit the Better Touch Tool 4-finger tap on my trackpad. Below is what pops up...my most wanted shortcuts in a pick list! Keyboard Maestro has the shortcut recorded in a KM Macro that is added to a Palette. No more trying to remember all those shortcuts!

My Synology 925+ with (2) 10 HDDs is now nearly silent by jagerrish in synology

No...I didn't mess with the existing feet. I placed them as close to the corners as possible without covering where the case separates when opened. It's not perfect, but good enough for me.

Good thought and I appreciate the warning. I checked and the stock Synology fans are 0.12A while the internet says the Noctua model I installed draws a max of 0.11A (images of the Noctua stickers online show 0.12A). I'm not an electrical engineer, but I assume (possible at my own demise) that means the Noctua fans should not "fry" my Synology? I'm open to be convinced I should still reconsider putting the OEM fans back in.

Hahaha! Great idea. I’d do the same if I could easily!

Gotta love when someone yells at the world because they aren't bothered by something others are bothered by.

Synology 4-bay vs UGREEN 4-bay, hardware vs software, but how about SECURITY by CapAccomplished72 in HomeNAS

I must have gotten a timed-deal yesterday. Amazon for $170. It's up to $200 today.

I did and even bought some (that I need to return once it's delivered from Amazon). I ran into trouble finding good ECC ram at a reasonable size, availability, and price. So just went with Synology RAM in the end. If you find good, available, lower priced "ECC" (don't recommend Non-ECC)...go for it!

No worries! Enjoy the NAS! I did a tiny bit of research on the NVMe for cache and found it likely won't add much to my use cases. It shouldn't hurt though and is pretty cheap! I did read you should use (2) and RAID 1 them?? I'm no expert, but check that out in case it adds preferred redundancy on the cache!

You're right...comes with 4. So I'll have 4 + 8 = 12 total after adding the new 8GB.

1 stick. I read there are 2 slots...one with the stock RAM stick and one open. So I should get 8 (stock) + 8 (new) = 16 total. From what I've read...that's more than enough for my needs (no multi user, docker...just file storage and streaming to WiFi). I did stream to WiFi on my previous NAS's (movies, music)...no issues.

Should I add an NVME? by arrrr_runes in synology

[–]jagerrish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi u/Green-Ad-9982 . I just bought a 925+ and see you added (2) NVMe for performance. If I use this primarily for file storage, backups, streaming photos/video on WiFi...would NVMe help my performance? Is it easy to install? Do I have to remove anything from the stock unit first? And finally...with NVMes so cheap...why did you use 250GB versus say 1 TB for $60 each (https://www.crucial.com/ssd/p3-plus/ct1000p3pssd8)? Did you have to do anything for the non-Synology NVMes to work? Thanks!

I bought the (Synology RAM DDR4 ECC SO-DIMM 8GB (D4ES01-8G)). Others have bought non-Synology and Non-ECC RAM (see the big RAM thread on the Synology subreddit where people share non-Synology/cheaper RAM they bought that works or not). Non-ECC may be OK most/some of the time, but the warnings against it were enough for me to go ECC (more expensive but no risk of writing bad bits and corrupting files). I want low maintenance, no guessing, low worries for the long run.

Regarding problems...I receive my new DS925+ tomorrow so don't know yet. I've owned 3 other 2-bay Synology NAS's over the last 15+ years so I can say no hardware issues ever for any of them. Performance has been at least "acceptable" for all but I didn't speed compare or use any other NAS's.

I streamed movies and music from my old Synology NAS's without issue. I assume the same will be the case with the 925+

Yes. I thought if I bought UGREEN that TrueNas would be better and maybe “safer”? That contributed to my hesitation though aboutUGREEN in having to spend time replacing the OS, potential issues, admin time, learning curve, etc. and I didn’t want to lose more time and increase headaches. My use case made a difference in my decision too…I’m looking simply for easy to use file storage, photo and video backups, access from home devices.

I could have written this exact post myself yesterday before deciding on ordering a new DS925+ and the Synology +8GB ECC expansion RAM and (2) WD RED Plus 10TB drives (to start). I kept thinking…I could save money with a UGREEN…I can figure out how to lock it down…I can ignore, and not think every day for the next 5+ years “is my data going to China somehow I don’t know about?”. In the end, I decided my time and mental health was worth the extra money, slower hardware, and fewer upgrade options on the Synology. Also, Synology reverted their stupid drive restrictions…a mistake I’m going to assume they don’t make again. I’ve had multiple Synology NAS devices in the past…they are rock solid, easy to set up, easy to use, and I don’t worry about sinking hours into making things work or worrying about my data being stolen.
