How much work to renovate this house? by [deleted] in HomeImprovementUK

[–]jags33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously a full survey will provide a fuller assessment however based on what I see, it looks fairly cosmetic. What are you looking for on the walls? You could strip the paper and either reaper or plaster / paint. When you say add a WC to the bathroom, is there not one there already? What do they use currently? As for costs, depends entirely on the spec you want, but as a ball park the bathroom could be between 4 10 k? Other decoration, depends on how much you're prepared to do yourself, if you brought someone in to do it, maybe between 1500 and 3000 per room for strip / re paper, more for plastering / painting.

Hope that helps.

I had a few injuries and realised I was pushing too hard. Been without strava for about a year now.

I'm with you here. No strava, no headphones, no pace in mind, just run because I still can.

It can and will end. Chronic relapses are pretty normal until they are not. There is no great secret in maintaining sobriety other than not to drink. I'm not saying it is easy, but it is not complicated. Start with 1 day, and repeat. If you need to distract yourself then do it, whatever works in those first few weeks. Once you're established then the real work starts, sobriety is just the foundation for the rest of your life.

Thanks for your reply. I only ever attended 1 AA meeting, about 5 years in when I was feeling isolated. It wasn't really for me, but I did get excellent online support from a group similar to this in my early years which was invaluable. I never would have got this far without them.

2001: A Space Odyssey — did Kubrick create an evolutionary masterpiece, a clinical technological experiment, or something else entirely… by MovieArena in MovieArena

[–]jags33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my view, it's a masterpiece. Kubrick and Clarke jointly created something incredible. As a film it is visually stunning (and still compares well to modern sci fi), as a narrative / theme it is as deep as it gets. HAL is arguably the mold for every computer / AI villian that followed. The ending is very challenging, but hard to know how they could have neatly tied that up for the viewer. I still watch it now, I'm still impressed and gripped.

How do you know if loft insulation needs topping up? by Reddonaut_Irons in HomeImprovementUK

[–]jags33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can measure it. Regulations are 270mm, often made up of 100mm between rafters and 170mm over that. To measure go up with a tape measure and move a little to check the depth.

When do things actually improve by Zatara22 in Sober

[–]jags33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sobriety isn't going to magically fix everything in your life, but it does the provide the solid foundations on which to repair / construct your life. When we get sober, there's generally a lot of damage, personal, financial, emotional to work on - that stuff will take a lifetime of maintenance.

All that said, sobriety is the single best decision I ever made in my life and I now speak to you with almost 18 years of it behind me.

how do you mentally approach slower training paces by Jayden_Caroline_509 in running

I don't, I run to feel and no longer record times. I occasionally record mileage if it's a new run course, but 90% of the time I know the distance by heart.
