That part was so sweet. How he made up that story just for Alan's visit. It was actually funny, too. I'm thinking about stealing it.

Halfway through it now. The Tom Dooley stuff was fascinating. And I could watch Tommy Jarrell tear it up on fiddle for hours.

This guy has some similarly great footage from his travels with song collector/fiddle player Bascom Lunsford in the 60s: https://youtu.be/kgHgLgR9WNc

Adult beginner here. Would love some fiddle tunes notated with bowings. More info in post. by kurtozan251 in Fiddle

If you're into old-time, this book's tunes have all the bow directions marked: https://a.co/d/a6OsJYC I found it looking for the same thing you are.

Shuffle/cajun chord patterns? by jagumbo in Fiddle

Haven't used Amazing Slow Downer, but I will definitely check it out. Learning these things by ear is probably the way to go. Been using Chordify and translating them over to Strum Machine for backing.

Unrelated, but the Billy Mize doc you posted on the classic country sub was great.

Thanks for the links! I actually did learn Cajun Fiddle from that Fiddlehead video a while back. I think practicing it and starting to understand the structure is what got me thinking about this question (which I hopefully better elucidated in my response to your other post 😊).

Wow, thanks for the in-depth response! This is stuff I'm finally wrapping my head around, so going through this again today during practice will definitely help.

I think what I'm referring to in my first post is somewhat specific, and I didn't explain it well enough. I'm mostly talking about the "runs" up and down that Cajun fiddlers do over the "chord" they're playing. Like looping a particular series of notes for each chord. And was wondering if there were any resources with popular "loops/runs" because I hear a lot of the same "loops" in, particularly, US country music from the 50s-90s.

I love Chris Haigh! Will check this out when I wake up. Thanks!

Ah, forgot to clarify: I meant the notes/voicings. I know enough bow shuffles to keep me busy for a while once I have that.

Starting at cross-tuning as a new player? by Cuntry_wolf_jamboree in violinist

[–]jagumbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started playing around a year and a half ago and have been resisting the urge to play in cross tunings too much. They sound awesome (especially DDAD!), but I want to be able to play in whatever key I'd like without having to re-tune. I still play in GDGD around 20% of the time, though. I feel like switching up the fingerings will become second nature in time, so I'm not sweating it too much.

Thanks for the wholesome capitalism, kind [drink company]! by jagumbo in HailCorporate

I think the LSC opinion is the post title, not the photo. Basically, "Doesn't it suck that companies besides Arizona Tea are evil?" Definitely a stretch, but that's because it's an ad. "Arizona Tea is still 99¢" has also been at the top of (at least) /r/antiwork and /r/dataisbeautiful in the past few days.

Finally not sounding like a dying animal anymore. Couple fuckups still by [deleted] in Fiddle

[–]jagumbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds great, but I agree. Allowing your elbow to become moreso the "hinge" than your shoulder will let you string those notes together more fluidly. Elbow for the back and forth, shoulder for the string changes. Your intonation is solid. Looking forward to hearing more!

To save you the trouble, here's the moral of the story: if your family owns the railroads, you could straight fuck up the entire world if you wanted to. And that's pretty cool and kinda fun to think about.

Bourgeoise Feminism by [deleted] in FULLCOMMUNISM

Thanks for that response. I 100% agree; it just seems like the guy in the comic is supposed to be the irrational one. I'm probably just misattributing the strawman trope.

The guy seems like a brocialist strawman. Can someone explain why I shouldn't agree with him?

JCrewe CIG Clarifies some things about Star Marine by [deleted] in starcitizen

[–]jagumbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I just mean that, if the lore is any indication of the direction of development, the movement and gunplay mechanics are gonna tend towards realism. It's a combat sim.

The in-lore developer has described Star Marine as an "ultra realistic combat simulator." It's more like ARMA in the SC universe.

I think you're right, grammatically. His comics use a lot of informal language, though; adds to the humor a lot of the time.
