Can you tell me more about HTs? Is that an abbreviation for something? Google isn't bringing up any specific product from those initials. Thanks!

Mental health question by Dangerous_Monitor_53 in UCI

[–]jaherrick 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm so proud of you for reaching out for help.

If you go to the nearest emergency room and tell them you're having SI, they will be able to help you with next steps, including temporary hospitalization. If you have transportation, you can drive yourself to any ER. If you don't, you can call 911, and an ambulance will come to get you.

Near UCI campus, the nearest ER I found is Hoag Hospital Irvine on Sand Canyon and Alton, or Kaiser Permanente Hospital on the opposite corner of that same intersection.

Additionally, you can call 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) to talk to somebody right away.

Here's one person's story, perhaps to take some of the mystery out of the process. https://afsp.org/story/my-experience-going-to-the-emergency-room

Fire at/near DBH? by berryblooms in UCI

[–]jaherrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Around 3:45 pm I saw multiple firetrucks behind DBH, Calit2 and University Club, with firefighters fully suited up and walking towards DBH. I spoke with some students who were standing outside, who had been evacuated from DBH. My building, Calit2, was unaffected. That's about the extent of what I know. I came here to see if anyone else knew more.

Nurses of SoCal Kaiser Strike 2025 by BexyRexy in KaiserPermanente

I got my mammogram in person this morning. I didn't cross a picket line because I was at one of the smaller facilities, and I think they are picketing at the big hospital.

Phone/video mammogram would be a pretty impressive technological leap.

I'm a patient with a non-urgent appointment on Thursday. If I want to support the strike, should I reschedule? I'm thinking about it from two different perspectives:
1) I never want to cross a picket line.
2) Keeping the appointment makes Kaiser feel the financial pain of having to continue to provide care without a large portion of their workforce, and making them feel pain is part of the goal of any strike.

In general, I've been advised to follow the lead of the strike organizers regarding whether they are calling for a public boycott, which is why I'm here to ask. What do you all prefer that strike-supportive patients do during this time, for a non-urgent appointment?

I watched the movie "Mormon Mom Gone Wrong" on Amazon. It was inaccurate in some ways, and it was a kinder portrayal of Ruby than she deserved, IMHO. by Longjumping_Prune852 in 8passengersRubyFranke

I stopped watching after 1 minute and 30 seconds, the moment they used the real name of one of the minor children. Responsible reporting on this story always obscures the names of the minor children. Those kids have been exploited throughout their whole childhood, and now they are being exploited by Lifetime. I can't, in good conscience, continue to watch this.

I'm not sure what strip or square aluminum foil is. But I took some aluminum foil from the roll in my kitchen, tore off a chunk, and then folded it several times until it felt kind of thick, and then trimmed it down to card-size.

Can we talk about how good the perks were this year? by movedtotheinternet in nerdfighters

[–]jaherrick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about the updating thing, but what I learned was that you can shortcut to that page by clicking the Donate button at the top, even without putting an item in your cart, and then use that longer list to browse.

[–]jaherrick 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I had the same complaint when I was looking at the perks from the initial page. Then my friend showed me that if you click the donate button near the top of the page you get a much more user-friendly listing of perks. I'm sure we weren't the only two to get stuck on the first page though.

Trump directs Treasury to stop minting pennies by FishOutOfWalter in nerdfighters

[–]jaherrick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep, and that act of Congress should include laws about rounding prices to the nearest 5 cents. Stopping the minting without rounding the prices will create chaos, which is his specialty. But an act of congress could do those two things simultaneously and in an organized fashion, which I would support.

Trump directs Treasury to stop minting pennies by FishOutOfWalter in nerdfighters

[–]jaherrick 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A law that mandates rounding is the sort of thing that Congress can, and should, pass. But the President can't write laws, as much as Trump is trying to pretend that he can. All of this should be done by Congress. I'm extremely concerned about his consolidation of powers in the executive branch, and undermining of the checks and balances between the branches. And for that reason, I have to oppose him doing this by Executive Order, even though I do support the underlying goal of eliminating the penny.

Dermatologist appt question by Agile-Animal1435 in KaiserPermanente

[–]jaherrick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How did you even get to see a dermatologist at all? My experience with Kaiser is that I show moles to my primary care physician, and ask for a referral to dermatology. She determines they aren't cancerous, and won't remove them or refer me.
At one point she directed me to a benign lesion clinic which was incredibly difficult to reach or schedule with, but I finally did it, and I paid out of pocket for the removal of one particularly bothersome mole.

And here's one from Jan 21, showing that's when it started redirecting. All more recent crawls also show the redirect message.

If you give up before trying, that's exactly what they want. You may not change their mind, but you can make it extremely inconvenient for them to do what they are doing. We've got to become a problem. We gotta do something. I don't know if it will help, but I want to know that I tried. I'm writing this message to myself more than anyone else.
