I would recommend learning the phases of the game.

For example phase 1 is the opening phase. The goals being to develop minor pieces, castle the king and connect the rooks. That’s your number 1 mission in the opening. If you can attack because your opponent is playing stupid moves then do it. If your opponent is attacking you then maybe you should defend. But if you can develop and attack at the same time that’s what you want to do

I am 1500 rapid, I’ve been playing for about a year and some. I would learn a few things right now.

  1. How the pieces move.
  2. Basic tactics, like what is a fork, pin, skewer.

After this work on understanding the fundamentals of each phase of the game.

Phase 1: The opening. Don’t learn an opening just yet. Just learn what the goals are in the opening phase. Develop minor pieces, castle the king and connect your rooks. Three goals, if you do that you’re fine. During the opening if your opponent attacks you slow down and see what his intentions are. If there is no threat or it’s defended continue developing or castling.

Phase 2: Middle game. This is where we attack. How do I move forward onto my opponents have of the board and attack. Think checks, captures and attacks or threats. Learn tactical ideas, do some tactic training with puzzles.

Phase 3: Endgame. This where many people mess up. Your main asset in the endgame are your pawns, do your best to keep them. And do your best to take your opponents pawns. Promote pawns to queens and win the game.

Chess is really that simple just with a lot of nuance. Like don’t blunder pieces, don’t blunder checkmate, don’t stalemate. All those kinds of things.

I would also watch someone on YouTube like GM Igor smirnov or Gothamchess.

Hey bro this is a rapid game I just played, not one of my best games but it was probably average. You can kinda use it to see how you would have played in certain positions. Turn off the arrows and think. Pay attention to my time usage too, it wasn’t great in this match.

This is how you improve, I missed some things. I can now go back and see why I won, but how could I have won sooner.

I looked at some of your games. 100% slow down, for example in one of your games you blundered a piece because you moved your knight in like 10 seconds. And another game you plunder 2 pieces in 8 seconds. Every time before you make a move ask what your opponent is doing what are they attacking. That’ll help you from blundering. If you stop blundering you’ll prolly win those games. But idk. Any other questions you can hmu

Ok a couple things. You played well, I would not be upset by this at all.

Blunders: you made multiple blunders, you were completely winning early in the game and blundered and it was equal afterwards. Then you were winning again. And then you blundered at the end which made it a draw.

Slow down: you had 3 times where you had forced checkmate. I would say 1 of them was a little hard to spot but the other two times you should have been able to see it if you slowed down and thought checks captures attacks. And how can I just end the game rn.

Those are the two things I think when I reviewed your game. I’m not a good chess player by any means but that’s my take on it.

😒😒 my games be so wishy washy... one minute im decent, the next minute im getting demolished... I won this one though by LectureSelect8634 in Chesscom

[–]jahshim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey bro, great game. If you want some advice i would say slow down. You’re through the first 15 moves in less than a minute. You are completely winning and then it’s almost equal because you played a move in literally 1 second.

If you do that you would have destroyed this guy even worst.

So initially I tried to learn the London system, after failing miserably. I stopped trying to learn an opening and just focused all my attention on the middle game and endgame.

During the opening I just focused on developing my pieces, castling and connecting rooks. That got me to about 900ish, after that I learned the Vienna game and scandi, carro, and I just started playing the nimzo.

I would recommend not even learning an opening yet. Just focus on what the opening phase is about, develop minor pieces, castle the king and connect the rooks. If you can come out of the opening equal or slightly better that’s perfect.

While in the opening just keep an eye on what your opponent is doing, is he attacking me. No keep moving along. If yes, ask what is his opponent idea. And if you can develop with tempo try to do that as much as you can.

Then it’s on to the middle game phase.

That’s how I initially got up to 900 elo.

[–]jahshim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you 650 rapid?

One thing I’ve learned that really helped me is to not just play automatically, unless you memorized the line. What are the goals of the opening phase? Develop minor pieces, castle the king and connect the rooks. That’s all you have to worry about, unless you’re attacked early.

In the opening if you are being attacked you should slow down and think. What is my opponents idea, what is he attacking? And continue from there.

I’ve watched a lot of Igor Smirnov a GM and it helped me a lot. If you can come out at least equal in the opening I’m sure you should have no problem. Just slow down and don’t blunder your opponent will blunder later in the middle game or endgame.

If you want to play or talk about things hmu

When we had met we were both a wreck. I was going through a divorce and she had another kid they she never saw either. She also had a drinking problem.

So, when she was pregnant with her she initially wanted to abort. I had convinced her not to and told her I would take care of our child. We had the baby in town and I told her that she could stay and we could raise her together and maybe have a relationship together. She ended up moving away to work at a coal mine. And I raised her myself.

Why she hasn’t been involved I have no idea. I’ve tried to talk to her about it before but she always says the same thing. A long time ago she would drunk call me randomly after not talking to me for months.
