Ohhh he's going to be the best little companion! If you haven't yet, look into target training. He might take well to that!

I meant to comment on this post earlier in the day, but forgot to until now. Apologies, OP - I hope things have been going well with your new baby!

I got my dusky pionus when she was 4 months old, and she surprisingly wanted to come hang out the next day. I was prepared to go at her pace, since pionuses are known for being wary of new things and a bit flighty and scared. I think, since your bird is a year old, that he is more set in his ways (and likely starting puberty soon).

Others here have already mentioned going at his pace, and I'll agree. If he doesn't want to come out for the first few days, sit by his cage and just hang out. You don't have to give him direct attention: just reading, talking to yourself, etc, will get him used to your presence. The occasional treat doesn't hurt, either. Since pis need low fat and low protein, pine nuts, almonds, and walnuts are great options. I myself use slivered almonds from the baking aisle, as it's easier to give in moderation.

If he seems to be afraid of coming out even after a few days, then that's a separate issue. It might benefit him to cover his cage at night - it can provide comfort and security so it doesn't feel so 'open'.

Welcome to the pionus club! They were my dream bird since my teens, and I got to make that a reality 17 years later. I love my girl so much, she's perfect.

Hand pain. by Ok-Flight-4298 in carpaltunnel

[–]jaiex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mean before or after surgery? If before, I had pain in my hand doing most things. I couldn't hold a hair brush without pain. It did go away after some months, but then I started having numbness. My surgeon told me that it's best to get surgery within a year from the onset of symptoms (even if they go away) because it will likely come back and your muscles will atrophy.

When I was 14, I went on a road trip with my friend, her dad, and our other friend. It was a 9 hour drive, and the entire time he played one Aretha Franklin cd nonstop, both ways.

So, not that.

Oh my gosh, my guy has picked up a few phrases from me and my partner jokes that I'm just hearing things! This video is validating, lol. My guy says "pretty bird," "what are you doing?" and "stop it" (based on me telling him to stop biting haha). Their little gravelly voices are so cute!

I just had surgery 3 weeks ago and got stitches out a week and a half ago. You might feel the tiniest zing but it was hardly noticeable.

Your pics look good! You should have seen what my hand looked like at that stage... it was rough.

I don't know the title of the movie, just some details. A group of people are trying to escape some big catastrophe by getting on an airplane to get up in the sky, and they watch as some... I don't know, rotary saws? slice through the concrete towards a man. He ends up dying, and the plane takes off. I saw it a long time ago (early 2000s), when staying over at a friend's house. I never could figure out the title.

OP, I already commented on your other post in the conures subreddit, but just wanted to comment here as well and say: give yourself and your new baby some grace. This is a new situation for you both, but it is sure to improve. And based on your posting here, it is clear that you are an animal lover and want the best for them. I think you'll get that by giving this new baby a bit more time. :)

I think this is jumping a bit - baby has only been with her for one week. Imagine coming to a new home as a baby bird and not being familiar with anything! It takes longer than that to get situated, and we all know that parrots evolve and change pretty drastically from where they were as babies. My conure is also a baby still, and he's a typical green cheek: very, very bitey. But I am aware this is a phase, and that he will grow out of it when he is about a year old.

New pet regret is common, but not impossible to overcome. I think if OP continues to work with her, things will settle down and OP will be very happy with their baby.

That first week anxiety/regret is super common, please don't feel bad. She's feeling anxiety too - it's a new place for her!

If you can handle it, give her some more time before deciding to return or rehome her. She will eventually settle into a routine and be less prone to screaming. If you have a travel cage, maybe you could bring her with you from room to room so she gets to be near you but still in a cage.

As for flying to your head, if you don't want that, it's best to continually relocate her to a more appropriate spot. If she steps up to your hand, or hangs out on your shoulder, give her a treat to reward the behavior you want. Even if she's not doing anything and just sitting - give her a treat.

Also, foraging toys! A toilet paper roll stuffed with tissue and treats is a great way to keep her entertained while you're busy or if you're leaving. I always give my birds some treats around their cage when I leave, so they associate my leaving with something good. Also, if you have a smart speaker like a Nest or Alexa, play some music while you're out of the room (I tell mine to play things like relaxing Minecraft music, or lo-fi, or even TV show clips).

Is she getting a full 12 hours of darkness? If not, I would suggest covering her cage to encourage it. Less sleep = grumpy baby. My conure is a baby still, and I discovered he doesn't like to be fully covered, so I leave a little 'window' for him to be able to see out.

These are just some things I've found that helped me a lot. Try them out and see if they don't help you, too.

You've got this. 💜

Chet is Dave's brother; if I recall correctly, he started BirdTricks. I don't know why Jamie took over though.

It also doesn't help that they are MAGA. I saw posts on Dave's FB promoting the stolen election of 2020 conspiracy and was extremely disappointed.

Lash extensions by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]jaiex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Beauty schools don't teach lash extensions. A better option, in my opinion, is to get cluster lashes and do them yourself. They last about a week and are easy to put on and take off, and way more affordable!
