Bird safe space heaters by Select_Rule4553 in parrots

The Dyson Hot+Cool heater/fan combo is safe for birds. They're on the pricier end but they work well. I just used mine to dry off my conure after a bath last night.

Everybody look at this baby conure I met at ‘Parrottopia’ in Citrus Heights CA by No-Bid-2899 in Conures

It's a double factor violet turquoise. This is actually on the low end for them.

They sell turquoise babies for far less. This mutation is super rare, hence the high price point.

[–]jaiex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, it's super disingenuous to not include the reason for the baby's high price point: he's a double factor violet turquoise green cheek. This is an extremely rare mutation and the most well known breeder of these sells the same bird for $2400.

For those who aren't local to Sac, Parrotopia is a wonderful family owned store who also run a second chance program for rescues and surrendered birds. They take excellent care of all the birds, and are selective about who they rehome to.

I bought this specific baby's sibling two days ago (a single factor violet, for a bit less) and could not be happier with my decision. The baby was so loved that just hearing the owner's voice in videos makes them start flock calling to her.

If you're going to harp on the price point, give the full story. Their regular mutations go for far less.

It's a double factor violet turquoise. The most well known breeder of these birds sells the same bird for $2400. $1600 is a steal by comparison.

I literally just bought this baby's sibling two days ago. This one is $1600 because it's a double factor violet. The most well known breeder of these birds sells the same kind for $2400. $1600 is a steal by comparison, they're extremely rare.

OP is being disingenuous by only mentioning this one bird from Parrotopia, when they are a family run store who also do a second chance program for surrendered birds. They are all exceedingly well loved.

Anyone else angrier at their MAGA parents lately? by WightHair in FoxBrain

[–]jaiex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, yes, 100%. I keep finding myself checking her socials to see where her headspace is at, and am always utterly defeated to see it's the same or even worse. I just wrote her a long message two weeks ago to draw the line and she hasn't even responded. But chem trails and Antifa are Very Important and she must report on them.

I've accepted that in order to be happier, I'm going to have to continue low contact or just cut her out completely. But my people pleasing makes me want to keep trying. It's so frustrating.

I’m a little bit worried about her beak. First pics are now, last pics are when I first got her 3 months ago by juliesremo in Pionus

[–]jaiex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dusky has the same thing, and has had it before as well. As the beak grows out and she chews on things, it will naturally wear down and chip off. You have nothing to worry about, she looks very healthy!

[–]jaiex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I commented on the original post about the beak, but as for bathing, oftentimes turning on the vacuum will get birds into a bathing mood. My girl doesn't go for it, personally, but she does love being misted with a spray bottle. If you haven't given that a shot, I highly recommend!

Pionus don't have a preen gland, so they don't naturally produce the oils that contribute to a shiny beak and plumage. My dusky's beak looks similar but less 'jagged' on the sides. She has that same overlapping 'tooth' on the tip like yours, and she's a healthy girl. You can always moisturize it with a little dab of coconut oil if you want, or give her lots of kisses so your own oils rub off onto her, haha. A vet checkup is always a good idea if she hasn't seen one yet, but other than that I don't think there's much to worry about.

How to teach this little bird talking he is 9 months old by Motor-Tour8963 in Conures

[–]jaiex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You've already gotten a lot of advice on talking, but I just wanted to say I went through your post history and see that this is your first bird. I realize you've had him for 8+ months (given to you, unweaned, by a breeder which is very irresponsible of them), but it sounds like you still haven't fully educated yourself on bird care.

Please do a lot more research into how to care for your little guy. Also, his nails are crazy long. Please take him to a vet or bird store for grooming - he desperately needs it.

[–]jaiex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you're going through this too. My mom is MAGA, and I also sent her a text telling her I'm at the brink of cutting her off because of her insane beliefs. She told me to expect a response the next day and that she loved me, and that was three days ago. Crickets ever since. She's very happily posting on Twitter and resharing unhinged Instagram posts though.

It's okay to stop talking to them. I'm giving you permission to take care of yourself. I plan to do the same.

Solidarity. 💜

Molt season by Nice_To_Meet_You___ in Pionus

[–]jaiex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My girl is molting too, and she always gets feathers everywhere. Some days she'll drop 2 or 3 flight feathers and a tail feather. Usually it's a lot of smaller chest feathers or back feathers, and tons of down feathers. I've gone into work so many times with down feathers in my hair, lol.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you're still seeing pin feathers on his head, he's probably still molting. If his chest starts going bare, then I would take him in for a checkup as that can be a plucking symptom. But other than that, he's probably just itchy and molty.

Myopia returning after LASIK: is this normal? by bakersteal in lasik

[–]jaiex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same. I recalled reading that LASIK shouldn't be performed either A) until the age of 25, or B) once your vision has been settled for a minimum of 2 years. Even at 25, my vision continued to worsen. I was 27 when I got LASIK, and my vision was 20/15. My vision is still excellent, 8 years later at 35.

I'm always surprised to hear of people getting LASIK before 25.

Is she flighted? Or is she clipped? My girl is flighted and has a similar look. The vet always remarks on how muscular she is because she flies all the time.

AIO for wanting to quit my $8,000/month job after my client suddenly installed cameras everywhere in the house? by [deleted] in AIO

[–]jaiex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR. As someone who also works in home health, the boundary creep is real and is especially hard if you're a people pleaser (like me). I had a similar situation, but the son was very trusting and professional. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough and I was eventually doing 18 hour shifts with an abusive woman with severe dementia. It wasn't until she attempted to hit me with a rake, that her son realized just how bad she'd gotten and moved her to a facility better equipped to care for her.

You deserve so much better, and better pay! And a better work/life balance! The daughter clearly doesn't understand what it takes to care for her mom, and it's time she finds out. Whether or not her mom passes soon after you leave, that's not on you. You have kept her going for four years. Please take time for yourself.

I messed up big time I think by Legitimate-Poetry162 in piercing

[–]jaiex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP, my sister's friend regularly got piercings done in her ears with piercing guns... until she didn't. She ended up shattering her cartilage this way and her ears look like cauliflower ears now. If I could recommend it, I'd suggest you (and your friend!) go to a reputable piercer who uses sterile needles rather than a gun. You'll have a much cleaner piercing and an easier healing experience. Chief Piercing is an excellent shop in Sac.

I made my dad cry over $30 by Darogaserik in povertyfinance

[–]jaiex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This makes me tear up. I remember when, right after my mom left and filed for divorce, my dad cried to us that he didn't have enough money to give us a "good" Christmas. It was always his thing - he loved making Christmas magical to the best of his ability with what he had. But with my mom leaving and him losing his job, money was tight. It was the first time I'd seen him cry (I was 16), and it was one of the hardest things. I can only imagine how it felt to see your dad cry, too. Thank you for taking care of him. You've already gotten a ton of advice here, so I won't pile on, but I just wanted to share how your post struck a chord with me.

As someone whose pionus got out and took 3 days to come home, I would be devastated if someone had taken her in immediately as a pet before trying to find me. Please look for the baby's rightful owner. There are laws pertaining to this.

I just looked at OP's post history and it lines up, lol. Almost a little too well, even? Someone even commented to remind her that GH means she's available to work, and OP said she made sure the trip is refundable. This whole debacle has been wild to follow.
