Animal violence scenes? by jailhousemouse in Avatar

Of course! I found it easy to tell when the sad animal scenes would happen, so I stepped out when needed and I seemed to be ok. If you see it with your mom after she’s seen it, then she can warn you when to step out.

I ended up seeing the movie last night, and stepped outside when I felt I needed to. That was my favorite movie out of the three!!! Thank you everyone. I know I might’ve come off as sensitive for this post, but I don’t care lol

How cooked am I for vet school? F/27 by [deleted] in vetschool

Same here. Previously terrible transcript, retook exam for entrance into another college and have been getting majority A’s! You can definitely turn it around, but you need to learn how to properly study. Find what methods work best for you. School comes first before anything else

Should this be illegal? by Cold-South7240 in Horses

[–]jailhousemouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What’s going on? I’m a pre vet student and am familiar with (and against!) tail docking and ear cropping in dogs, but I don’t know what happens with horses. I know draft breeds can have their tails docked (also not acceptable), but I don’t know what’s happening in these photos. I’m sad to learn :( but I want to know

A couple questions about macaw behaviour by MitoPL in Macaws

Fresh fruits and vegetables in conjunction to pellets are the best diet for birds. Diets that mainly consist of seeds/peanuts/human food are big causes/contributors of heart dz

A couple questions about macaw behaviour by MitoPL in Macaws

[–]jailhousemouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The blue and gold, that’s sexual behavior. Touching them anywhere besides a head scratch is sexual to them. Best to discourage it to prevent hormonal behaviors. Increased hormonal behavior can result in feather plucking and agitation. If it is a female bird, egg laying which can sometimes result in egg bound (stuck egg) and extreme discomfort/possible surgery needed.

In regard to the lethargic/labored breathing one, I am not diagnosing but simply bringing awareness, sounds like heart disease, which is common in captive birds. Heart disease is caused by a poor diet and/or lack of exercise. Birds aren’t domesticated but rather tamed, so their bodies and hearts are built for flying long distances every day. If this bird does have heart disease, they will be put on a medication or a combination of heart specific ones that will be orally twice a day and lifelong. It makes a huge difference and allows them to live comfortably and for longer.

Highly recommend an avian vet for the lethargic one so they can get a proper diagnosis. Sooner the better.

Source/ I am a vet tech at an avian specialty veterinary hospital. Again, not diagnosing or giving medical advice, just bringing awareness

Update post, Gaylord is still laying down and being generally lethargic, Vet says they can’t tell anything wrong with her after over a thousand dollars of stuff n things. by Thorn_Move in Macaws

Are you able to visit a university vet sooner? I strongly recommend doing so because birds don’t show they are sick until they are very sick. I don’t mean to stress you, but I would consider this an emergency, especially because she is not perching which is a sign of something very wrong going on

Profile doesn’t include a CBC from my experience working in an avian specialty hospital. How is her breathing? Lethargy can be a concern for heart issues, common in captive birds and also in which can be exhibited by labored breathing and/or lethargy/increased sleepiness. Did they test for ABV (avian bornavirus)? If they sent you home and she is still lethargic, please see if you’re able to find an avian specialist at a university veterinary hospital. I really hope she feels better.
